Join the Travis Manion Foundation, The Mission Continues, Councilman Marvin Sutton and his wife Raquel, Webb Masonic Lodge, St Andrews UMC, Rotarians, MAD Radio, friends, neighbors and more for the 2nd Annual Fish Creek Cleanup Challenge on Saturday the 25th of January. 9 am to noon in Grand Prairie with a party to follow or in Arlington from 9 am to 2 pm. Sign up early for lunch and t-shirt.

THIS is why we need an annual cleanup. Litter that is suffocating the creek, its banks and the wooded area by it. Half of these are Grand Prairie, Texas (Dallas County) and half are Arlington, Texas (Tarrant County).

Quite often I am asked, “Where does it all come from?”

It comes from the recycle bin that blows over with a big gust of wind. It comes from toys and balls left in driveways and yards overnight when the storms came. It comes from the garbage cans that were overflowing. It came from the accident on the corner that no one cleaned up the automobile parts and pieces. It came from the jogger that didn’t wait until the next trash can a mere yards away. It came from the student that thought the place looks like a trash can. It came from the motorist who was done with lunch and threw the bag out of the window. It came from the cigarette smoker who thought, “it’s just a small butt.” It came from the busy parent that left a dirty diaper in the parking lot. It fell out of someone’s purse or pocket. It came from the neighbor who recently cut limbs and discarded them by the creek instead of bundling for pickup. It came from the home builder, roofing contractor, flooring contractor, fencing contractor and others who didn’t go to the dump instead. It came from the homeless encampment that was washed away, again. It came from someone who thought, “It’s just one bottle” as they rushed to work. It came from someone who threw it off the overpass in a fit of anger. Some was on purpose. Some was accidental. It is all suffocating not just the creek but the wildlife such as fish, turtles, birds, squirrels and bunnies to name a few.

We need to learn litter prevention. We need to reduce, reuse and recycle. Until then, we need an annual cleanup to alleviate the litter problem in Fish Creek and prevent it from becoming litter in Black Creek Lake, west fork of the Trinity River, Gulf of Mexico and the worlds oceans.

2nd Annual Fish Creek Cleanup Challenge is Saturday January the 25th from 9 am to noon in Grand Prairie and until 2 pm in Arlington, TX. Challenge yourself to come out and make a difference. Challenge your church, coworkers, friends, family, neighbors and any group, organization or individual to join us too! And let’s all challenge ourselves to do better in reducing, rising and recycling. Let’s not be afraid to talk to someone about their actions when we see them not properly dispose of garbage.

Short Film on the State of the Creek

The 2nd Annual Fish Creek Cleanup Challenge is scheduled for Saturday the 25th of January from 9 am to 2 pm in Arlington, TX and until noon in Grand Prairie, TX. There are 8 miles of plastic bottles, styrofoam, tires, shopping carts, plastic bags, balls and more! Neighbors, groups, individuals and all ages welcome. Bring glad hearts and happy hands as we clean up Fish Creek, the banks of the creek, the wooded area around the creek and trail. Come for 30 minutes or all day.
