Drought Crisis in the southwest of the US Lake Mead, the US largest reservoir in terms of water capacity, is draining extremely fast. It’s located east of Las Vegas, on the Nevada-Arizona border and on June 16, 2021, it was 143 feet below its full capacity. This is the lowest level since the reservoir was formed at the end of 1935. It lost almost 5.5 trillion gallons of water. For the last two weeks, every day has been setting a new record as the water was rapidly evaporating leaving a “bathtub ring” of white minerals along the shoreline. The lake was losing about 6 feet of water a year due to evaporation averaging 300 billion gallons per year. This is on top of water being withdrawn by people for personal use and power generation. About 25 million people rely on water from the lake and the agriculture industry would be among the first ones to feel it. ncrease of Seismic Activity in Salton Sea Lake On June 5, 2021, at 1 am local time, a series of small to midsize quakes started near Salton Sea Lake, Southern California, east of the San Andreas Fault, and it has yet to stop. Within the first couple of days, over 1,000 shakings took place with the largest one so far being of a magnitude-5.25. Since the main shock mainshock happened 11 hours after these quakes began, it was proposed to be a mainshock/aftershock sequence rather than a swarm of quakes or at least a hybrid version of it. On June 10 seismic activities in the area renewed and on June 11, at 9:27 PM an M4.3 and M4.1 quakes occurred northwest of where the majority of shaking occurred earlier this week. Geothermal production is considered to be the primary driving mechanism of swarms in the region in addition to plate tectonic movements. A Swarm of Earthquakes in Los Angeles Over the last few days, Los Angeles experienced nearly 90 small earthquakes around the Inglewood Area near Newport-Inglewood Fault Zone. Most of them happened after the M4.0 one that hit about 5 miles east of LAX on April 5 at the depth of 11.8 miles. The main quake was deep enough and caused no damage and according to seismologists, it was a combination of up and down motion and side-to-side. The swarm of quakes began the same day at 4 am with the biggest one hitting at 4:45 am local time and covering quite a large area about 1.5 to 4.5 miles. It's not clear yet whether earthquakes are occurring on an unmapped section or on the main fault segment. In 1933, Newport-Inglewood Fault Zone was hit by M6.4 known as Long Beach Earthquake causing widespread damage in the area. Since 2020, Los Angeles has been hit by 20 quakes of M4.0+. Half a year ago, M4.5 one hit Montebello Hills.
