This is me doing the 10 minutes technique for the HST 320 paper, I take off my headset so that I can concentrate on my paper and stop procrastinating and being absent minded. Things that I learned from the topic is that during the time approximately about 1250BCE, China has undergone a huge change on its policy about government official which is caused by the perfection of the imperial examination. With the help of the exam, people with talent trying hard to support their country will eventually gain their revenue.

10 Minute Technique
Aimee Vargas

This is a picture of me implementing the 10 minute technique with my Exploration project. I’ve started by looking up the requirements for my major as well as other majors that I’m interested in pursuing. I also have a checklist that I’m working on to plan out what courses I am still missing and which courses I’ve already completed.
The 10 minute technique pushes me to just start the task that I keep procrastinating on. Sometimes I dread the thought of doing work when I have about an hour of free time. Spending just 10 minutes on a pending assignment gives me a head start as well as the motivation to complete the task as a whole. Even if I don’t complete the whole assignment in that one sitting, I know that I’ve at least started the assignment and it really helps in the long run.

I am researching major questions that are asked when you are opening a restaurant. Some of the things that I have learned are “location, location, location” meaning location is the primary factor to success. Another huge role in being successful is managing costs. These can range from rent, salary, electric/gas bill, food cost, etc.... The restaurant business also has a 90% rate of failure, so it is also a very hard industry to be successful in although I think I will be very successful in my future with this career path.

I utilized the 10-Minute Technique by working on my PSY 395 extra credit in Schine. I put my phone down for 10 minutes so I could work on the extra credit by doing research on the topic I’m writing about, which is the Goldwater rule and if psychologists should be allowed to diagnose public figures without proper examination.

LOVE THE SELFIES
Michael Griffin here,
So this weeks theme was ‘breaking the ice’.

For me personally, the hardest part of doing homework is actually cracking open the book, or laptop, and actually starting the assignment. It’s not that I don’t believe I can’t do the work or that I think it will be too time consuming, there’s just that mental block between being productive and being lazy. It’s something that I’ve always struggled with. To combat this, I’ve tried to place myself in environments that lift my spirits up in the hopes that I would motivate me to better ‘break the ice’ on my assignements!
The first place I went to was right outside my door and into my balcony. Not everybody has the luxury of their very own balcony so I take mine for what it’s worth. It provides ample space to do work while simultaneously providing a quiet comforting area for myself to really focus and be free of modern distractions like Television or video games.

After some time however, I wanted a change of pace. While I love my balcony, I wanted to see what the campus had to offer, so I took a walk to what I believe to be my favorite spot in campus. The third floor of the library! It’s not too quiet but not noisy what so ever. It’s a perfect work environment for myself to flourish in my assignments! I was able to really crack down on my biology homework there and finish it in a timely manner.

In addition to finding great spots on campus to study, it’s essential to set goals for yourself to keep you on track! For me this week, my goals were more professionally based and not so academically based.

Talking to my chain of command to get my tuition paid for was a big goal of mine which I was worried about, but it turned out to be significantly easier than I originally expected!
Meeting with my academic advisor to discuss my courses for next semester was also a very big challenge. Not physically hard but rather a mental challenge. I’m not even done with this semester and I’m already having to worry about next semesters classes, YUCK! But it had to be done, so with one quick 30 minute visit I was able to sort out may of the questions and concerns I had! The advisors here in campus are very cordial and caring which is comforting to find.
My next big goal was to volunteer more. I love helping the community but I never knew where to start here in campus. So last weekend I reached out to the veterans affairs office and put my name in the list for flag detail for the football game this weekend! I got to unroll the flag with other veterans in the field, it was really awesome and I met some staff members That will be very beneficial to know here in campus!

In addition to flag detail, I helped an organization here on campus with a fundraiser they were hosting. The ROTC community helped put in a plethora of exercises for a group of volunteers to raise money! It was a blast.

Now that I know where to start looking for volunteer opportunities in campus, I will gladly be volunteering more often. It’s all about breaking the ice sometimes and just getting out there. Putting yourself outside your comfort zone.

I like the video, your playlist, your group theme and how you showed evidence of all of your goals and accomplishing them throughout the course of the week.
tumblr
Figuring out the most motivational spots to work in can be a bit of a challenge sometimes. For me, that was not the case. the first day I got to Syracuse, I knew that the second I entered the football complex on south campus, I found a spot that I felt that no matter what it was, I would be able to get anything accomplished that I had to. Whenever I am in there, whether it is the locker room, the cafeteria, or the player lounge (the video above) I knew that I would have a lot of people to push me, motivate me and become the best in everything I do. This is a spot that I tend to go to so I can get myself a snack between classes and a majority of the time do a lot of schoolwork.

which leads to my next point. Once I get to the player lounge, nobody is usually there because all of my other teammates are up at class. This week, being that Monday is our off day for football, I decided to go to the player lounge before my 3:45 class and with the presence of nobody and a little bit of motivation with having the opportunity to be sitting in a room that a lot of kids would do anything to get the chance to sit in there, I was able to bang out my 8th reflection for my College Learning Studies class. It really felt good to be able to accomplish this assignment early in an area where I feel motivated because it gave me more time on other days of the week to complete other assignments that I had due.

Goal setting is very important to be successful in life. Whether it is in the classroom, on the field, or with any hobby that you have. For me, each goal is pretty similar to the ones in the previous week. Obviously with being a very competitive person, I always have one of my goals to beat the team we are playing that week. And then I like to set weekly goals for myself whether it involves sleep, or something with school work. this usually help me focus for the week.
The best thing to do when setting goals is to break them down to get a better understanding of what you need to accomplish. For me, it was always making sure that the breakdown of my goals, I do them to the best of my ability because then will only make completing the goal so much better. Breaking any task or goal down into smaller tasks will always help to complete bigger tasks.
Along with goal making, you need to make sure that you have deadlines when it comes to making goals. By doing this, you won’t lose track of time, you wont procrastinate. This will allow you to complete the things that you want to which will allow you to complete your goals.
Music is definitely a big factor for getting myself motivated. With being an athlete, music is definitely a way for me to get pumped up, focused, and ready to go for whatever it is I am doing. Here above is a playlist that I started that usually gets me motivated. These songs usually get me pumped up and get me motivated to get my work done. I love listening to music when I am getting my work done. it helps me concentrate and helps me get my work done quicker
My progress has been going very well with all go my goals. From a young kid I was always told to make goals for myself. so my progress is going very well.
Our ‘Theme of the Week’ is ”BREAKING THE ICE”. When trying to accomplish bigger goals in life, it is always good to chip away at the small things to help you obtain the bigger things like BREAKING THE ICE into smaller parts to get to the center of the Ice Cube.

Good job Tess! I've gone home Friday morning and gotten back Sunday night and have been dead the next morning so I completely get that. Good luck getting into the iSchool I know you got it :) -CLS Group 6

THERESA EWELL
Our group theme today was #IfThisThenThat. This week was a hard week for me. I went home on Thursday for family and came back late on Sunday night. This was a setback to my goals- and made me have to rewrite my goals for this week, partly on catchin up on the work I missed. My goals this week are all about focusing on now, focusing on what to catch up on, and not procrastinating.
Doing the tumblr project was part of one of my goals for this week. I went to the library and rented out a book about psychology and aging. I have been interesting in psychology for a very long time, but never had the motivation or time to actually sit down and read a little bit more about it. I loved doing this, because it really made me think about possibly minoring in psych.
Another goal of mine is a long term goal. My long term goal is to be accepted into the ischool. Part of this process is looking into it more and doing the application process. If I do the application process, and work hard, then I will possibly be accepted into a great major I am very interested in. Hence— if this, then that.
I created a homework motivation playlist of all my favorite calm cool down songs. I felt this might help me throughout this week when I’m working on all my homework/things to catch up on. It relieves a lot of stress for me— listening to music while doing my work.
A lot of the work I will be doing this week will be in the library of bird. Yesterday, I did a lot of my Philosophy readings here, and annotated along the way. Annotating while doing my readings helps me a lot. It keeps me focused, and helps me remember.
The rest of this week I will try and not procrastinate and stay focused. If I do this, then great success will come of it. If this, then that.

CLS Group 6:
We really loved your theme Yelitza! It was catchy and clever. We also feel like it’s very relatable. Firstly, we agree with your strategy of taking it a day at a time. we feel like we usually get very overwhelmed with the entirety of the goals we have in a week, a month and even for the whole semester. Yeah, this is good but usually it starts feeling unbearable after a while. We’re glad that this method helped you. Our favorite part (apart from the gif) was your incorporation of a Self-To Do list. Sometimes we forget to care about ourselves or to take some time out to relax. The fact that you remind yourself to cater for you the same way you cater to your grades and task was very inspiring and motivational. Keep it up!

“JUST KEEP SWIMMING”
This weeks theme was “Just keep swimming” and I did just that. I took it all day by day and set certain goals to accomplish by the end of each one. in my first image is a list of all the things I told myself I would do on October 7th, 2018 for this I used the 24 hour goals and luckily I was able to accomplish everything, this helped clear up my weekend for some personal time. My second image is me accomplishing one of these tasks. My third image shows another place that I like to do work which is at the coffee table in my apartment, my strategy here was Motivation tape, I watched a Ted Talk on women empowerment. I like to sit here for homework that isn’t too hard because I can relax and do, all from the couch. My fourth image shows how I used the Post it method at home. I put a few motivational quotes on them so I can see then when I’m looking at myself or when I’m heading out. Lastly, I added a GIF from a scene where Dory a character who’s constantly struggling tells Marlin, Nemo’s dad to “Just Keep Swimming” which I found motivational because its coming from a fish who deals with a lot in this case. Overall, I learned that with all the things that happen in a college students daily life the best advice is to “just keep swimming” whenever you come across anything that seems to be remotely challenging.

Expanding Horizons for Motivation and Goal Setting

Aimee Vargas
Exploring Places
This first picture I took at Carnegie Library (it’s hard to put myself in the picture when I study alone by the way). I rented out a calculus textbook and a calculator to review for my upcoming exam. It was very quiet but since everyone was doing work it gave me more of a motivation to do my own work too. Once I stopped procrastinating, I got to work on my practice test for calculus. I feel like I was very productive during my time here at Carnegie and I’ll definitely go back again.
Goal Setting
This week my goals were to:
-Make an appointment with my academic advisor
-Go food shopping
-Study for organic chemistry exam
I broke these goals down into three different steps [picture].
Firstly, on Thursday, I scheduled time to look ahead for some free time to schedule an appointment. I then set some time out of my break on Friday to make the appointment with my academic counselor.
Secondly, I made a list on Wednesday of the items I needed to buy at the supermarket. Then, on Thursday morning I scheduled a zipcar for the afternoon and then went with my roommate to go make the groceries.
Lastly, I studied for my organic chemistry exam that was scheduled for Thursday. I had reminded myself to study my study aids throughout the week to make sure that I did well on my exam.
Along with these goals I had for the week, I also added a new album to my playlist. They’re called Tuxedo and so is the album. I love how soothing the songs are and it’s not distracting to listen to when I’m doing my work, which is my favorite part about it.
Overall, I’ve been doing alright but I do acknowledge the fact that time is starting to go way faster. Tackling goals this way does help get through the week more efficiently. Experimenting with locations also helps with motivation because it shifts my level of focus, which I appreciate.

Our theme for this week is Expanding Horizons for Motivation and Goal Setting. For the first part, I was doing my ECN 311 study guide in Goldstein for the incoming exam on next wednesday while I was also doing experiment project about this class. The reason why I choose Golstein is because it is much closer to my dorm compared with the main campus. Meanwhile, because it is on weekend, I am able to access in Goldstein easily so that I can stop procrastinating and focus on what I am supposed to do. Suceessfully, I have done the main part of the study guide.
For the second part, I have created my goals and playlists and succeeded to finish before the date that I set up. I made good use of my leisure time on completing the study sheets for experiment project while it is a great chance to review it while writing those notes down. Meanwhile, I use my planner to plan to finish step by step. In other words, due to the fact that I have done these two things productively, I am able to finish my book on Sunday.

Our theme for this week is Expanding Horizons for Motivation and Goal Setting. For the first part, I was in Schine doing some reading for my ETS class. I also did some online reading in Goldstein for ETS as well. I really liked going to Goldstein for a change because it is surprising really quiet and was a really good place for me to be motivated and get work done. Since I’m on South Campus, it is really close to me and I’m definitely going to start going there more.
For the second part of the assignment, I put my 3 Goal Plan in my planner so I could look at it throughout the week and make sure I got everything done by the date I wanted to. Like last week, having the plan of 3 goals for specific dates really helped me become less stressed since it allows you to see the major assignments and tasks you have for the week and helped me organize them by importance. For example, I focused on my readings for ETS for the first part of the week while my two exams later in the week since they are the week after. I really like this goal plan and I want to continue to do it every week even after the semester and this class are over. My playlist is also shown above!

Theme: Expanding Horizons for Motivation and Goal Setting
The assignment that I chose to get done this week was my CFS 425 paper.I worked on it periodically at Bird Library throughout the course of the week.Attached below is some of the work I have accomplished in bird doing my paper.

my 3 goals for the week
Choose nsd project and start it with my group
-meet with group-choose a topic
-Email professor the topic we chose
Complete my cfs project
-re go through rubric and make sure all aspects are completed
-Email professor about possible extension because I have 3 other projects all due at same time
Complete cls project
-Need to complete cfs first
-Basically halfway done just need to check the rubric and make sure I thoroughly answered everything

Attached below is my new playlist for the week:

My progress for this week was just as expected, so in my opinion I do not need any sort of reboot. I Need to keep my goals for the week constantly changing as well as my playlists (unless I find certain songs that motivate me more than others).

The assignment I chose to get done because I kept pushing it off was chapter 10 of psychology. The first picture I submitted is where I chose to start my outline which was outside of Lawrinson. I chose outside because I wanted to try a different setting which was quiet and peaceful. The second place I chose to compelte my work was the study floor in Lawrinson. This helped me get motivated to do work because everyone around me was also studying and being proactive. The three last posts are all the work I got done during these two

Goal Setting:
I had 3 goals for this week:
1. To organize my study material coming up
2. Fold my clean clothes
3. Organize the excel sheet for my dance troupe’s photoshoot.
I decided to give myself deadlines for each and to jot down the tasks on my planner so I wouldn’t forget (highlighted in pink). I feel like this strategy was very useful and it encourages me to start a new week with a purpose. Being able to get all my goals done was very satisfying and I really enjoyed that.
I also made a playlist. I included a lot of my favorite songs like The Girl from Ipanema by Stan Getz and Joāo Gilberto. It is a very soothing song and it always calms me down. It is then followed by songs by Kali Uchis, Gold Link, J. Cole, Miguel, etc. They are all my favorite artists and having a playlist with just my favorite songs really keeps me in a great mood. I called it good morning because I usually listen to it to start my day.

Relocating: A Shift in Place & Focus

Library Exploration:
I found this spot on the third floor of bird. It is very quiet and it has a nice view, which helps me concentrate and stay motivated. I wasn’t sure of whether or not I’d like this place at first because I usually don’t like places that are way too quiet. However, I did. I was listening to my favorite play list and got some studying done for my calculus exam coming up.
I was also able to rent out a phone charger. This is the first time I did that and I didn’t even know they had laptop chargers to lend. I usually always struggle with keeping my computer charged or just making sure that my charger is in my bookbag. This was very useful for me.
Overall, I enjoyed finding a new location to get some work done. I feel like my favorite spots have become way too social by the time that I want to get work done and it becomes almost impossible to do so.

THEME: Relocating: A shift in Place & Focus
As I posted above, I tired to change up where I did my work this week. I chose to got to the second floor of bird library, thinking it would be a great environment to get some work done. I posted pictures of the work I completed, the book I checked out “Psychology and aging”, me reading the book , my motivational playlist for the week to help me get my work and goals accomplished as well as my few goals for the week. I believe that the setting of doing my work in the library was pretty helpful and I liked to try new things. I found it so helpful because any resource I could possibly need was right at my fingertips. My planner was also a big help because it allowed me to set time aside to do certain things for school that I needed to do. I believe that if I did not have a planner that honestly my grades would be much worse than they are now. The planner really helps me get a good grasp of what I want to do for the week and how I plan on managing my time. Looking at my progress from the week, I was able to go above and beyond what I had originally thought I would get done. All of my goals were achieved to my best abilities and I was able to go so far ahead in some of my classes that im done for the month with work in that particular class (Nsd 114, Ear 105). This weeks Tumblr assignment really helped me with setting and achieving my goals and I plan on using this strategy in the upcoming weeks and throughout the rest of my college career, especially when I have a lot of work and need to manage my time accordingly. Although the place I usually do my work is in my dorm , I liked the change of locations because there were far less distractions than I have in my dorm.
