With everything else complete, I could finally finish up my poster as a whole, first I laid out the final images, postic notes, and text. I named my poster, "The Layers of A Design Student" a title that reflects both the layered aspects of the poster and my identity as a design student.

Next, I developed this by making the notes smaller, and changing several placements around in order to make the numbers read in a clearer order. I also changed the title from "Design Student" to "Artist" as this whole paper is about how I fit into the art world, not just in my studies, but connected to the world beyond it.

Finally, filtering and finishing touches. I brightened the backdrop behind the text in order to make it more legible. I then added crinkles to the Postic Notes, and patches of dirt to the images. I also fixed the shadows under the paper and notes. These small finishing touches make a huge difference and bring my poster up to the quality expected of it.

The Final 5 Items
16. School Portfolio Wall
Above my bed, and along my walls, I have my final Year 13 Design Boards printed out. This is not only a physical, large-scale version of some work I am very proud of. But it's placement makes it a constant reminder of who I am, and gives me a point of comparison as to where I've come from.

17. Katana
My best friend bought me this completely unprompted because I said I wanted a sword in passing conversation, I view it as a symbol of our friendship and a moment of unconditional kindness. These kinds of friendships have built me up, held me accountable, and supported me in becoming both the man and designer I am today.

18. Sketchbook
Although I prefer to work with computers as soon as possible, you would be a fool to neglect the benefits of analog sketching. My sketchbook is an essential part of concept design and visualization.

19. My Phone
Unfortunately, I don't have the money right now for a laptop. Therefore I have learned to write notes, plan concepts, and complete written work from my phone, and use this later when I get back to my PC. On top of that, my phone is my primary access to my social media, the main place I can share my work with the world!

20. My Photo Albulm
My mother used to be very into scrapbooking, as such all three children have a gorgeous childhood scrapbook documenting their lives up to the age of ten. This not only reminds me of my own memories, but also my mother's love, and how that forged the man I am today.

Week 12 Lecture- Developments and Feedback

Final Week before hand in, I got feedback on both my essay and poster.
Essay :
Emil say's I need to zoom out a bit, focus more on the industry and less on individual artists, especially those around me. He also reminded me I needed to properly comb through my work in search of mistakes.
Poster :
Both Emil and the class feedback agreed I need a good inventory system and a way of labelling my assets, as they will be very clumped up. I'm imagining a line of spray paint, connecting every text box to every asset. With three or four different colours as to not cause confusion.

Finished Essay Draft
I completed a drafted version of my essay in full.
The Essay can be broken down into 5 simple parts.
The Introduction, where I discuss the intent of the Essay to come.
Several paragraphs of self-reflection, where I look back at my work, its underlying themes, and what drives me towards these themes. The focus of this section is my love for messy, rustic, or imperfect design / decayed aesthetics and the authenticity and naturality it brings.
A few paragraphs centered around my technical preferences as a designer, and a brief look at designers and photographers whose work uses similar formats.
An exploration of designers I am connected to, starting off with designers in my own life who I know personally, zooming out to designers I share similarities with, and then discussing larger more famous New Zealand designers within the art world I want to enter.
The conclusion, where I summarise my keynotes of this essay.
There is still much editing to be done to improve on this essay, however I am relieved to have a finished version completed.

Developing My Item's
Now making my poster properly, I needed to write out proper paragraphs for each and every object included thus far, including their link to my design work. I also went out and took / found images to link to each one.
1. Amethyst Necklace
For her 20th Birthday, our third birthday together, I bought me and my girlfriend matching Amethyst and Silver necklaces. We had planned to get some ages back but never got around to it, although they are a new item, the necklaces are very dear to my heart as a symbol of our relationship. Me and my girlfriend are both Designer's at AUT, we work together and inspire one another, this relationship is essential to me as a designer.

2. D20
Since 2017, Year 10, me and my friends have been playing Dungeons and Dragons. I have ran two full campaigns to completion and been in four others. The D20 is a universally recognized symbol of the game that has shaped many of my friendships and supported possibly my favorite hobby. I have done an excessive amount of design work for these games, applying my study's to a function within the real world.

3. Sootie
Sootie is the name given to my childhood teddy bear. I purchased him myself at the age of eight in the Woburn Sands Safari park made of Alpaca fur he is one of the first things I ever bought with my own money. It rests atop my bedside table, and is very dear to me even still. We are not born into this world fully formed, our passions are formed through our childhood, and therefore our childhoods are incredibly important to reflect on in our design.

4. Smoke Machine
My dream is to one day run my very own shop, a one stop party shop and equipment rental store. In May of this year I started working towards this goal with the online launch of The Gear Merchant. We are still very early day’s but since then, this Smoke Machine has been my most purchased product and is fueling my ambition. I have done a large amount of design work for this project, posters, photography, logo's and web design. It is my greatest example of applied design within my recent years.

5. Wheels Keep Turning
My Grandmother on my Fathers side wrote and published an entire book detailing the story of her family, the Whelans. This book is a connection between me and my family history, and teaches me more and more about where I come from every time I read more of it. Our family's shape who we are as people, and to neglect the tie they have to us in our career life is insulting.

6. My Camera
My Camera is not only one of my most valuable possessions, it is also the conduit that enables one of my other passions, Photography. This camera is an essential in my life, as a hobbyist, a student and an artist. This is one of the most important tools to me as a graphic designer, and artist at large.

7. Ski's
Me and my family travel to the slopes of Ruhapahu every chance we get to enjoy skiing together, it is one of a main family events and I love these trips with a passion. These Skii’s not only enable these vacations but are a reminder of vacations gone and memories my family formed together. It is often on these vacations that I get the most of my planning and conceptual work done, a break from hassle and a chance to clear my head.

8. Yard Glass
My 21st Birthday was this year, a milestone achievement and a mark of adulthood, so of course I had to throw a rager. My party was an amazing night for me, featuring many people from my high school, old and new friends, many students in this class, family, and even a friend visiting from England. The Yard glass I downed that night is a reminder of my adulthood, the fact I am no longer a child or teenager and I am no longer just working towards a school project, but a career.

9. VR Headset
Looking forward into the future, I have recently purchased a VR headset which I ave spent far more time using than i’d like to admit. This headset connects me to the VR Space and all the fun, function and freedom that comes with it. I feel it is greatly important as a designer to work with the most recent tools at our disposal, to stay relivent and up to date as the world evolves.

10. Doctor Who DvDs
Doctor Who has been a hyper-fixation of mine ever since I was a young child, I feel glad to have a physical copy of this show that I am an absolute nerd for, and get to use to show my interest to anyone willing to watch it with me. My earliest art projects, and even some now, are related to this show, and my fan art of this show as a child developed many of my skills I use today.

11. Borin Badrian
My girlfriend custom built me a mini-figurine of my main-villain / main-character of my own DnD campaign, and novelisation of the world. I have spent a lot of time with, playing as, and developing this character and new possibilities for him have been stuck in the back of my mind ever since. The written work, and design work I have surrounded this character with has developed my skills greatly, and I owe Borin Badrian for keeping my design fun.

12. Ugandan Mace
While touring Uganda, on a humanitarian project for World Vision, one of the locals gave me this Wooden Mace. It is an authentic piece of Uganda brought back to New Zealand, and connects me to the wider world, a world very different to our own. When we are designers, it is important to reflect on the wider world, and the cultures that surround us, in order to approach a wider audience with respect and dignity.

13. AUT
My University, AUT. AUT was my first choice of University out of all four I considered as I had heard all about their great reputation regarding Design graduates. This university is the cornerstone of my identity as a student, and the foundation of my life as a Designer.
14. My PC
I have a brand new high-powered PC, bought with my Design future in mind. I installed a secondary monitor for extra efficiency and bumped up the RAM and storage compared to my old device. This has increased my comfort and flexibility in my design work, and I can't remember how I ever survived without it!

15. Our Travel Map.
In my formative years, from 7 - 12, I lived in England. During this time we traveled all throughout Europe, and through this experience, I saw the world in a different light. These travels have broadened my perspective on the world, and this map is a reminder of the journeys I went on and the memories I made.

Intro, Creative and Creation.
Half way through my essay now I reflected on the direction of my paper.
The first half of my essay focuses on my own work, what drives me as a creative and the connections I can make between my outcomes, inspirations and the outside world.
I covered the themes that inspire me, why darker and grittier imagery my work, the authenticity of mess and decay, the story's that can be told through the marks people leave, and what it means to be exploration in your work as a student.
I then focused more on the technical aspects of my Imagery the healthy balance between complexity, intrigue and minimalism I enjoy, how I usually work and why I break these rules from time to time. I drew comparisons and links between the layout of my work and photography of Fiona Pardington and Joyce Campbell.
With an in depth analysis of my own work, the remainder of the essay should be focused on the work of others, the ties that bind us, and my connection to the artists of New Zealand.

Poster Draft
I drafted up a quick idea as to what the Dip-Tych could look like within this system in mind. Using my assets I laid out the image with overlaying posters, and separated them by an indented set of bricks within the wall. This separates the legible, easy to rad, informative side. And the messy, imagery based side.
Overall I found this very useful as it has given me a far better idea as to what I am working towards.

Poster Asset's
We ran into an issue instantly, the Auckland council in all it's glory appears to have taken down all the Urban Decay on the wall, and replaced with with a clean set of polite looking posters advertising Allergy Medication and the hit new Teen Superhero Spin off 'Gen V'

Although I could find another, I have a better idea that will give me more control, I took images of every tattered and torn poster I could find, and plan to trace and overlay them together.

This may look less real, and requires more work, but I believe the control it will give me over layout at the end will be more than worth it.

I found this one part of the wall that looked absolutely perfect for a DipTych. With one side remaining clean and easy to place information on, and the other to be covered with imagery.

Four More New Zealand Artists
Adding to my portfolio of New Zealand artists, i looked into and discovered an extra five that intrigued me, or I felt connected to in some way.
Joyce Campbell
Joyce Campbell is an Auckland Photographer, and educator at the University of Auckland. Her work studies the moment of connection between life forms or objects, and how they interact with one another.

Jakob Munford
Jakob is a young and talented multi-subject artist. Only graduating University in 2020. Despite this he has been recognized by Vice and Happy Mag as a top NZ Photographer. His work feels very authentic and natural, focussing on candid subjects in his world.

Melissa Kelsey
Melissa Kelsey was the top New Zealand Photography student in 2012, receiving a 100% grade for her project on Social Networking. Not only do I connect to her a student, but her work is the exact style I myself am drawn to.

Frances Haszard
Frances Haszard is a surrealist animator and motion designer. She has many projects made both for websites and short films of her own design. All projects focussed on abstract motion and surrealism.

Peeling Posters
My concept for my poster is to create the illusion, of a "street eaten" poster wall. Overlapping images scraping and peeling themselves off to reveal other images beneath.
I chose this because it is not only aesthetically interesting, but it speaks to the concept of peeling away at layers of a person. It represents how when these aspects are all added up and stacked atop one another you get the person, who they are and what they stand for, and it's only by peeling away at these ideas that we will see what's hidden beneath the surface.
The utilisation of Urban Decay is something that has always spoke to me as a great conduit for art, it carries humanity and emotion within it, stories left untold. Therefore I think my personal connection, and previous utilisation of the concept, speaks to the connection aspect of the poster, adding an extra element the posters meaning.
I know one such wall exists in Chancery Square, so I plan to take images of that as soon as possible.

What Does My Work Look Like?

My studies have led me to make numerous different kinds of Design work, from book covers to posters, album covers, and social awareness campaigns. Throughout this, I tried a variety of styles and designs. However, I do enjoy grungy painted aesthetics, as well as photographic design.

My Photography generally focuses on darkness and horror, with heavy Photoshop and digital art added to create unnerving effects. I tend to focus on desaturated colors or teal and beige hues.
I have also done much design work on my new start-up company The Gear mercahnt. the website is very new and will be modified in the weeks and months coming, but aside from several od jobs for friends and family friends, this is the most real-world design I have applied myself to.
