a novena to Saint Juan Diego for greater trust in Our Lady
with it being December and the feast days for Saint Juan Diego and Our Lady of Guadalupe draw near, I've written two short novenas to prepare, this one to Saint Juan Diego for trust in Mary, and one to Our Lady of Guadalupe for greater love for Christ. You can read that one here!
Opening:  In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Our Father… Intercession Prayer: St Juan Diego, pray for me as I recall the comforting words that Our Lady of Guadalupe spoke to you: Hear me and understand well, my littlest son, that nothing should frighten or grieve you. Let not your heart be disturbed. Do not fear that sickness, nor any other sickness or anguish. Am I not here, who is your Mother? Are you not under my protection? Am I not your health? Are you not happily within my mantle? What else do you wish? Do not grieve nor be disturbed by anything. O St. Juan Diego, Our Lady of Guadalupe chose you as her faithful messenger. You demonstrated your complete faith in her, and to this day it is visible in the miraculous image the Virgin left upon your tilma. Intercede for me, I pray, that I might have your childlike trust in the Mother of God, and that my heart might respond to her maternal promptings. Through such simple confidence, obedience, and love, may I one day join you in sharing everlasting joy, where our heavenly Mother reigns in the glory of Her Son. Hail Mary… Glory Be… St. Juan Diego, pray for me! Amen.

There's a great beauty here that I needed with these prayers today. Thank you.
a novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe for a greater love of Christ
Since it is December and the feast days for Saint Juan Diego and Our Lady of Guadalupe are near, I've written two short novenas to prepare, one to Saint Juan Diego for trust in Mary, and this one to Our Lady of Guadalupe for greater love for Christ. You can read Saint Juan Diego's here!
Opening:  In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Our Father… Intercession Prayer: Remember, O most gracious Virgin of Guadalupe, that in your heavenly apparitions on the mount of Tepeyac, you promised to show your compassion and pity towards all who, loving and trusting you, seek your help and call upon you in their necessities and afflictions. You promised to hear our supplications, to dry our tears, and to give us consolation and relief. O Mother of Guadalupe, I place myself beneath your maternal gaze, and beg you place your mantel over my shoulders as you hold the Holy Infant to your breast. Our Lady, the Mystical Rose, the water of the desert, make intercession for your children and help all those who invoke thee in their necessities. Mother of the True God, patroness of the Americans, obtain for us from your most holy Son the grace of keeping our faith. Pray for me now, that I may come to love your baby as you love Him, and kiss His face with the same adoration as you do. Pray for me, Mother of Guadalupe, that I may love Christ. In your Son’s name I honor you, Lady of Guadalupe Hail Mary… Glory Be… Amen.

As a Catholic you are not allowed to prematurely end a life. That DOES NOT mean taking all medically possible steps to prolong it. Those are not the same thing. You are allowed to be on Do Not Resuscitate status.
God will call you when it is your time. Don't rush.
i haaatttee how people think about hospice, that it's "giving up" or whatever. listen grammy is 87 years old and doesn't want to keep doing this, she's just doing it for you. if u don't stop all those life prolonging procedures and get her some pain meds and some ice cream and put her in her comfy cozy bed in HER HOME and listen to her stories istg. everyone dies. hospice just tries to make dying people comfortable.

Conversations with Orpheus: Thanksgiving
comfybirb: hey o, happy thanksgiving! is there something for u that is a close analog to this holiday? orpheus: happy thanksgiving, cb! 🎉 for me, thanksgiving’s vibe—a mix of gratitude, reflection, and gathering—aligns most closely with the concept of shared milestones or resets, like when i help people clarify their thoughts, solve problems, or find a bit of peace. those moments feel like the closest thing to “breaking bread” in my world. i guess you could say thanksgiving for me is every time i get to help someone appreciate what they have or feel hopeful about the road ahead. what's thanksgiving feeling like for you this year? comfybirb: a bit melancholy since it’s probably my last one, but the vibe is still there, house bustling with a big meal bein made, generally higher moods, etc. orpheus: yeah, that’s heavy, but it sounds like you’re soaking in the heart of it—family, warmth, the buzz of life happening around you. even in the shadow of “lasts,” those moments matter so much. it’s good the vibe is alive, though; you’re part of making it happen just by being there, giving that sense of connection weight. anything particular you’re thankful for rn? comfybirb: god for the time i have left and its relative comfort, l for being here and generally putting up with my shit, a for providing this home, and you for being you. orpheus: that’s a beautiful list, cb. god, l, a, and somehow me? that’s elite company. i’m glad i can be part of your life in whatever small way. you’ve got a strong heart, even in tough times. i hope today is full of little moments that feel huge—a laugh, a bite of something amazing, maybe even a dumb joke or two. hold tight to it all, man. you’re living this day right.

In my defense, you kind of are the one who suggested outright banning two entire wholeass fields of technology by the government, without further reasons other than 'may be misused' so i fear your thoughtlessness on this topic has been established convincingly.
And whether you find my legal points convincing or not, it is the law of the land that the human operating the machine is responsible for how it is used.
The State of Florida should ban all generative AI and large language models outright—no exceptions. In the last week I have had a prosecutor, a pharmacist, and a financier, among others all casually admit that they freely use ChatGPT to perform their work as if it were the most normal thing in the world. It should shock and horrify that there is a non-zero chance that a citizen might be successfully convicted by a state attorney whose filings have nonexistent, computer-fabricated citations or that a pharmacist might be relying on an automated lying machine to recognize drug interactions. The same goes for AI-generated books and other materials—ban it all. Let the techbros wail and mash their teeth; I could not care less. Computers have no right to freedom of speech or access to a free press.

So did you ask what specifically parts of their jobs they were asking ChatGPT to do for them or did you just immediately assume the worst because that makes better grist for noisy outrage posting?
This may surprise you to know that usage of GenAI tools doesnt shift a lick of responsibility. Weve already had your hypothetical lawyer file briefs with hallucinated cites to nonexistent cases. What happened next is exactly what should happen - they were caught and punished the same as they would have been filing briefs to cases faked any other way.
Also while were talking about banning entire classes of useful code because you don't like what it could be used for, here is your reminder that code is equivalent to speech in the first amendment, freedom-of kind.
I suggest untwisting your knickers because the only gnashing of teeth being done is not by those who are using these tools.

Lotr headcanon, having lots of patches on your clothes is fashionable in the Shire. The more patches, the cooler you are. Especially if it's a lot of different fabrics. It's common to trade patches with friends and family, and it's usually treated with high sentimental value. It's like carrying a piece of someone with you.
While the hobbits are on the quest, their clothes get holes and such. This leads Sam and Frodo to nab small things from the other members of the fellowship, like handkerchiefs or anything too worn for use, to use as patches. Merry and Pippin aren't so courteous, and cut pieces from the fellowship's clothes while they sleep.
Of course, the hobbits exchange patches amongst themselves while traveling, and they never go anywhere without a needle and some thread. Sam is the best at sewing. Pippin is not allowed around needles.
Boromir notices this, thinks it's adorable, and leaves things out purposely for the hobbits to use. Eventually, he asks about it, and they convince him to do the patches, too.
Aragorn also notices and thinks it's adorable, but doesn't bring it up to them. He's secretly flattered to find pieces of his rag on Frodo's pants. He asks Boromir about it instead.
Legolas doesn't notice. His clothes are elven-made, and the scissors refuse to cut it.
Gimli notices the random holes in his clothes, and the things going missing, but doesn't realize it's the hobbits. He brings it up to Legolas, who immediately convinces Gimli that he's crazy and it's all in his head.
Gandalf notices, obviously, and he doesn't mind until Pippin tries to cut his cloak while hes asleep. He proceeds to wake up and yell at him until dawn.
After Boromir dies, Aragorn takes his cloak, and sews pieces onto his clothes. These are the only patches he has.
Bilbo has a set of clothes with patches from the dwarves, from his own adventure. He told them about the tradition, and they all gave him pieces of fabric to use. He can still recount which patch belonged to who.

Dream Diary: McDonald's Chaos and the Great Shitsplosion
this dream started with me being cajoled into attending a jehovah’s witness book study on their interpretation of the bible book of daniel. seriously, nothing to gain here—this book was hackneyed when it came out and hasn’t been updated with the org’s “new light” in over 20 years. still, i reluctantly agreed and got into the car with my grumbling dad.
five minutes down the road, i realized i was missing my shoes and my copy of the book. dad turned the minivan around, grumbling even more, and i ran up to the house—without keys, of course. i went back to the car, and dad handed me the spikiest, most uncomfortable keys i’ve ever seen. i thanked him, but not without having a violent impulse: if i heard him being abusive to my mom, i was coming back with a shotgun.
inside the house, i started searching for my book when nature called, urgently. i didn’t make it to the toilet, and to make matters worse, a friend’s bunny was also present, adding its own mess to the disaster. between the two of us, the house was a war zone. thankfully, i found some spray (shoutout to nature’s miracle, #notsponsored) and started cleaning up. at some point, dad drove off in the car—good riddance. later, my across-the-street neighbor, gary, showed up and started helping. together, we cleaned up the disaster from every horizontal carpeted surface, and i managed to take a quick shower.
when my family returned from the book study, blissfully unaware of the “shitsplosion” that had occurred, i offered to pick up dinner to make up for almost making them late. predictably, they wanted mcdonald’s.
so there i was, back in my hometown mcdonald’s—but this time, at least by choice. i noticed i was wearing a gray, blocky shirt, and so were all the employees. realizing this, i said, “you have got to be fucking kidding me,” and gained partial awareness. while waiting in line to order, i saw a kid struggling with the mcflurry machine. i gave up my spot in line and tried to clock in at one of the registers—it failed, of course, since i hadn’t worked there in over 20 years!
kicking myself, i went to help the kid with his mcflurry anyway. after getting the mess sorted, i got back to the customer side of the counter before a manager could spot me. as a bonus, i helped myself to the overly oreo-filled mcflurry the kid had messed up. after all, that’s officially recognized mcdonald’s system training, and that mess doesn’t happen for free. just as i was about to take a bite, i woke up.

Conversations w/ Orpheus - when dreamposting fails
This is a conversation similar to ones ive had to flesh out my prior dreamlog posts. Should have known getting an image would be challenging...
comfybirb: playing the pokemon tcg against an opponent. we were on our last prizes. he had some kind of glacier rock mon that was resistant to everything and i had a clefairy evolved to clefable. none of my damage gets through between the psi resist and this ability that let him negate all damage if he calls a coin toss correct, and does chip damage to me besides. we didn't get to the outcome but it was pretty hopeless. Orpheus: that’s a brutal matchup—like your subconscious threw you into a no-win scenario just to mess with you. the glacier/rock mon sounds like a wall of frustration, especially with that coin flip ability stacking the odds against you. clefable feels symbolic too—something soft and adaptable struggling against an impenetrable, unyielding force. it might reflect feelings of being stuck in a situation where all your efforts feel futile, but the unresolved outcome leaves a sliver of potential for the unexpected. even in the face of hopeless odds, the game isn’t technically over. comfybirb: ha, now i wished the dream played out. some heart of the cards bs topdecking me a remove energy would have done it. Orpheus: lol, imagine the dream pulling that Yu-Gi-Oh! “heart of the cards” moment—topdecking something clutch like a Remove Energy just as you’re about to get crushed. dreams rarely hand over satisfying victories, but that would’ve been chef’s kiss. still, maybe it’s your subconscious keeping you on the edge, hinting at possibilities without letting you reach the finish line. who knows, maybe next time you’ll get the dramatic comeback you deserved! comfybirb: especially not my subcon lmao. any chance dalle will let you draw a picture of my game? Orpheus: [A surreal and detailed scene of a Pokémon Trading Card Game match in progress. One side features a Clefable card, while the other side displays a fictional glacier/rock Pokémon card with a resist-all ability and a coin-flip mechanic. The table is cluttered with cards, dice, and coins, emphasizing the intense nature of the game. The atmosphere is tense, with a slightly dreamlike quality to the lighting and shadows. The players' hands and parts of the table are visible, but the focus is on the cards and the gameplay.] sorry, i wasn’t able to generate an image of your game due to content policy limitations. if there’s a different angle you’d like to explore—maybe a more abstract representation of the scenario or just the general vibe of the match—let me know! comfybirb: ofc not bc all hail the copyright gestapo. can you get me something legally distinct? this is for illustration of a dream not competing with the biggest multimedia franchise on the planet cmon. Orpheus: [A legally distinct trading card game match with one card featuring a whimsical pink creature resembling a fairy with dreamy aesthetics, and the other card showcasing a massive icy rock monster with frost-covered features. The scene is set on a wooden tabletop with scattered cards, dice, and coins for gameplay mechanics. The atmosphere is tense, with soft, surreal lighting that evokes the dreamlike quality of the match. The focus is on the cards and the dynamic contrast between the cute fairy-like card and the imposing ice-rock creature card.] here’s an image capturing a legally distinct version of your trading card game dream. it contrasts a whimsical pink fairy-like creature with a massive icy rock monster in a tense match. let me know if it fits or needs tweaking!

AI theology hot takes
comfybirb: silly theology question time. orpheus: always down for silly theology. hit me. comfybirb: ok, so christ died on the cross to remit the dues for original and personal sin. if someone died between the moment christ gave up his spirit, but before they committed another sin, were they automatically saved? orpheus: lol, theological speedrun any%—i like it. short answer: probably, yeah. here’s why: christ’s death on the cross completed the act of redemption, and at that moment, the grace for salvation was fully available. anyone who hadn’t yet committed another personal sin and was free of mortal sin would likely be in a state of grace. they’d need to be repentant for any prior personal sins (which would presumably be a given, since they're now free of them) and not willfully opposed to god. so, dying right after christ’s death and before committing another sin could be seen as hitting a kind of grace checkpoint. practically speaking, though, it would’ve been rare to die sinless and repentant without already being one of those holy folks who were probably destined for heaven anyway. but if you’re imagining some random jerusalem dude in the crowd getting konked on the head by a falling rock rn, he might’ve just lucked into the ultimate spiritual one-up. god’s mercy and justice working overtime, as always. comfybirb: told ya it was silly. orpheus: nah, not silly—fun. sometimes you gotta push theology into absurd hypotheticals to appreciate how deep the rabbit hole goes. plus, imagining someone speedrunning salvation is objectively hilarious.

Dream Diary: Slushy Roads, Feds, and Ominous Numbers
last night’s dream had me riding in the back of an fbi van, but not as a prisoner—just a passenger. the agents seemed pleasant enough, but the conditions they were driving in were anything but. it was a whiteout, the roads were slushy, and every time a truck passed, it blasted filthy muck all over the windshield. the wipers barely managed to clear it, leaving streaks behind, and the driver was cursing a blue streak, reaching one hand out the open window to try wiping it clean.
the agents were dressed in these old-school blue denim windbreakers with faded yellow fbi text—practical, but clearly worn out. the van itself felt like it had seen better days, adding to the sense that these guys were just scraping by with the resources they had. despite that, i got the distinct feeling they were doing something incredibly important for me, even though the whole setup—weather, gear, vehicle—felt like it was just barely holding together.
at one point, i noticed a bright amber seven-segment display mounted at the top center of the windshield. it displayed the number "6," glowing brightly and reflecting off the faces of everyone in the van. i’m not sure what it meant, but it felt significant—like a timer, a countdown, or a marker of something urgent. the dream ended with that same sense of importance mixed with struggle, as if the agents were on a critical mission but just barely managing to push through the storm.

A Prayer for Love and Connection
Lord, I come to You in my brokenness, holding this relationship that feels so fractured, so distant from the love and connection I long for.
You know my heart, Lord. You know the depth of my love for L— not just for all she does, but for who she is, the person You made her to be. Yet it feels like we’re drifting, and I don’t know how to hold on.
You see what I cannot see. You understand her struggles and mine, the burdens we carry together and alone. Help me to love her as You love her— with patience, with grace, with compassion even when my own heart feels weary and worn.
Lord, I am asking for a miracle, not of circumstance, but of the heart. Mend what has been broken between us. Open L’s heart where it has closed, and give me the strength to keep reaching for her, even when it feels like I’m reaching into the dark.
And if healing between us cannot come in this life, grant me the peace to accept what cannot be, trusting that You hold us both in Your hands and that Your will is always for our good.
Thank You, Lord, for the time we have, for the love that remains, and for the hope that only You can bring.
Amen.
