Many people wear metaphorical masks, a Japanese saying goes something along the lines of "a man wears three masks, one for strangers, one for loved ones, and one for himself"
Jonathan Crane wears a literal mask. Except, he feels most at home with the mask on. We see more and more in comics that he feels "naked" (his words) without it, and given the opportunity he'll ask for it from a guard or even Batman
When Jonathan puts on his burlap, he feels himself. He feels like the master of fear, not only does it give him confidence, but it gives him a scary look,so really--it's perfect for him.
I feel like Jonathan's metaphorical mask is when he's not the Scarecrow. When he's bare, human, dare I say...normal
But once the mask is donned, you better run
#reminder to self to explore crane’s attachment to his mask more often#its a personal hc of mine that scarecrow’s appearance isn’t just to be as scary as possible#but also it reflects how jon sees/feels about himself#not in an angsty way tho you could also take it that route#but more like he identifies with being this terrifying monster you’d see in your nightmares#and being able to visually represent himself as such is a form of cartharsis#honestly his whole association with anything scary and horrible = good is sooo interesting#and also kinda sad when you think abt his backstory BUT THATS FOR ANOTHER DAY#sorry for rambling in tags lmao#hc reblog#batman#jonathan crane

Wanted to add to this since I also do the names when it comes to Jervis and the rogues (especially with the current ongoing hattercrow fic i’m writing lol) and YOURE SO RIGHT WITH THE SUBTEXTUAL MEANINGS BEHIND THEM!!
Jon is March Hare ofc, both as Crane is Jerv’s closest friend and also the only other person who Jervis can relate to when it comes to his level of mental instability.
I tend to go for Ed being the Caterpillar, someone who asks a lot of questions and struggles to figure out who exactly he wants to be, a riddle he doesn’t always know how to solve. He also has a terrible tendency to be a proud know-it-all.
Oswald’s the Queen of Hearts, what with his short temper and position of power over others, as well as expecting everyone around him to do his bidding. He also enjoys putting the blame on anyone around him for the slightest inconvenience.
Past that it tends to just depend on how I write Jervis and who happens to be in his life currently, I’m sure there’s obvious choices for say, the white rabbit or cheshire (joker and selina are the only ones that come to mind for the latter) but I also think that Jervis would have a tendency to change his opinion of who someone is to him, and thus their nickname.
That being said I absolutely agree with “Everything Jervis says actually has meaning behind it, it just sounds like a bunch of random gibberish and references” because its both very clever and very painful. I think I can best describe it at Jervis having extraordinary insight on others and current situations, but no ability to properly communicate them because his words become too scrambled and he ends up often being on one side of the looking glass, staring sadly through the other side where none of the rogues bother to look his way. Unless you’re Jon or Ed lol
Thinking ab a discussion I had with @s-e-v-e-n-24 - It’s common in fics (especially Dork Squad ones) for Jervis to nickname his fellow rouges after Alice in Wonderland characters. And??
Ed most often ends up being Dormouse
And yes while this could just be a short joke on surface level, and dormouse does correct Alice a lot (something ed is definitely in the habit of),, Dormouse falls asleep a lot. He’s always drifting off or out of it.
Ed, when in Arkham and where he would typically be interacting with Jervis, is sedated off his ass.
Now, none of the others really talk about it? It would make sense if Ed’s kinda avoided in Arkham. No one wants to be put through someone else’s post-Batman rant, and the guy is Known for not shutting up. So maybe no one else realizes in the first place.
But just- Jervis using the nicknames as a way for him to try acknowledging things. But of course no one ever questions or picks up on it.
#my favourite pasttime is giving fictional characters unnecessary nuance its so fun#batman#batman rouges gallery#insane ramblings#reblog#jervis tetch

Gotham royally screwed up Alice and Jervis so I propose the easiest fix ever and its called Alice Pleasance who isn’t related at all and is just Jervis’ childhood crush-turned-fiancee.
(Spoilers for Gotham S3 btw)
She’s still poisoned, but the virus is also transmitted through saliva, among other things. Anyone she kisses gets infected and goes mad. She’s afraid to fall in love with anyone for fear of infecting them. Jervis is the only one who sticks by her side despite this, completely enamoured with his perfect Alice.
But when Jervis proposes to her and forgets the number one rule and kisses her, she becomes deeply afraid that Jervis is infected. He isn’t, but she becomes too paranoid to believe it, and their relationship crumbles. Jervis has problems of his own (mainly abandonment issues) and isn’t exactly the most stable of people, and accidentally hypnotises her during a fight (he’s had the ability since he was a kid). He realises just how much control he can have with his ability, and he never looks back. He thinks he’s fixing her.
Alice watches the man she loves slowly become someone far more darker and dangerous, from controlling her to be the perfect partner, to sending her to Indian Hill (to get her cured, he doesn’t think she’d get kidnapped), and the destruction he causes to get her back. She thinks its the virus that’s doing this. She blames herself for the monster he’s become, and she can’t let herself, her love, do this to anyone else. Her death is her mercy to Gotham.
…Or, it should have been. But what she never sees is how she was the only thing keeping him sane. How her death truly pushes him off the deep end.
How Jervis Tetch was never infected to begin with. But now? If he was, it wouldn’t make any difference.
#i have a longer version of this in my drafts with more jervis/alice lore so if you wanna see that lmk#i could write a fanfic bout this sometime but i’m busy doing my hattercrow fic so it’ll have to wait#headcanons#batman#rogues gallery#jervis tetch#gotham tv#alice pleasance#insane ramblings#seriously tho why’d they have to do jervis so dirty with that one detail cmon

I saw your American McGee’s Alice Jarvis and was reminded of the 3rd game that EA canned and all the dresses from that. In particular the “Denial” dress.
Ooooooohhh.... the Denial Dress....
Or should we say, Denial Suit. Saw this ask and knew I just had to draw it for him, but it took me a few tries to translate accents on her dress to a men's coat lol-- but it was fun!
There's a puffiness about the suit that seems padded, insulated. The flowers on the hat are yellow carnations and daisies-- symbolizing regret with love and innocence, respectively. He wears his heart(cufflink) on his sleeve, but wears his usual mercury symbol backwards. His insides are a paper mache of crime reports and missing posters of past victims, and his hat peels back like chipping paint to reveal raw skin and a frantically moving eye. Once seeing the desperate stitching in the back of the suit, one realizes that the stitching on the front of the leg is likely not harmless decoration, but a sign of decay.
#oooo this is so cool! i love outfits designs for characters that have a ton of meaningful details :]#really fits jervis since a big part of his character is how he tries to keep up appearances despite having very little sanity left#at least in some iterations of him#cool art#batman#jervis tetch

Bear with me while I ramble about how Your Father’s Son by Shayfer James fits the dork squad PAINFULLY WELL - particularly from Jon’s POV
If you subscribe to the idea of Crane working at Arkham as a psychologist at some point like I do then you may also entertain the idea of him assessing Ed or Jervis at some point, or otherwise just having his own (un)professional opinion of their psychological profile.
The first verse is very obviously fitting to Ed, someone who uses his words to show off both his intelligence but also his own egocentric nature and tendency to insult and belittle everyone he knows.

The second one is very Jervis, with the clock metaphors (if you see Jervis as a hypnotist which I do, but even in general since Alice has some time related themes with the white rabbit) and his habit of using fantasy to cope with reality, choosing his own interpretation over the truth.

The main chorus and bridge i’ll use to explain the main idea I get with this song - Jon believes they are the spitting image of however their father treated them, an opinion influenced from his own experiences with his father (so absolutely terrible). Whatever trauma they’ve been through has fuelled their dysfunctional traits to present day, and it doesn’t matter who they blame for it. And God help them if they find themselves in need of someone, because it sure as hell isn’t gonna be easy for them to ever keep someone.

I also get this vibe of Jon being very self-loathing towards himself, knowing he’s no better than the other two, perhaps even worse with what he’s done in the name of his research and obsessions, and so its so easy for him to be brutally blunt about what’s wrong with everyone else.
Do i think the song fits perfectly? Not quite, personally I usually go with the hc that Jervis had quite loving parents who he lost early on in his childhood, and that kickstarted his fear of abandonment (among other things not caused by losing them), but i found it insane how fitting this song is for the three of them.
Anyway go listen to Your Father’s Son its a REALLY GOOD SONG i’ll even put it down below :3
