That means he was also in charge of watching their victim. 

The group had their rules; Whoever’s house it was, they’d bow out sick from school that week. They’d be in charge of guarding their victim. The others would be in charge of running interference so the parents don’t ask where their kid is.

He’d went to bed early the night before so he wouldn’t have to deal with watching anything.

(He just wants someone to love him, for real. Yes, he’s got feelings for guys but I mean, it’s Derry and everyone in that town drilled ‘homosexuality bad’ into those kids’ heads. Peer pressure and bullying in general are an absolute bitch and he’s tried shoving that WAY down in there.)

(He truly loves anyone who’ll love him, so I guess it’d be considered pansexual. He just hasn’t worked out things yet.)
