People should be allowed to open up a discussion as to why a certain character’s actions or portrayal makes them uncomfortable without having to apologize for taking up space.
People should be allowed to open up a discussion as to why a certain character’s actions have psychological intrigue to them without having to apologize for taking up space.
People probably should not be allowed to be blatant abuse apologists or start victim-blaming simply because they like a character, and that character happens to be a shitty person. You can like a character because of their intrigue and hate them as a person. You can like Vriska and hate what she did to Tavros. You do not have to hate Tavros to like Vriska.
You can like a character as a character, and hate them as a person. You can like a character as a person, and hate them as a character. You can like a character as both a character and a person. You can hate a character as both a character and a person.
You can discuss how a character’s actions or writing make you uncomfortable through the lens of a character writing, but not through the lens of human behavior. You can discuss how a character’s actions or writing make you uncomfortable through the lens of human behavior, and not as character writing. You can discuss your uncomfortability regarding both if both is applicable for you.
These are all ok.
What is not cool is liking a character who is a bad person... And then using apologetics to excuse all of their behavior by making everyone else around them seem exponentially worse than they really are. What is not cool is liking a character who is an abuser and using apologetics to excuse all of their behavior and shift the guilt or blame of their actions onto the victims of their abuse.
People having harmless discussion on their opinions on certain characters from their perspective is perfectly fine. They should not have to apologize for having those discussions. They should not be attacked for having those discussions. But also... The phrase “harmless discussion” does not at all include purposefully bad faith arguments and talking points, and it does not at all include abuse apologetics or victim blaming.
For example: If someone wants to talk about how they love Gamzee as a character, but not as a person, we should let them. But if they start blaming Terezi for the abuse that he inflicted on her, that is not ok.

Black girls deserve to learn free from bias and stereotypes.
Most black girls experience this hatred at schools. And classmates are not the only problem, there is no support from teachers, too. That’s why they get so affected by their school experiences. Black kids deserve to be treated just like everybody else, they want to study, they want to learn something ,too. However due to prejudice they are 5 times more likely to be suspended than their white peers and it can ruin their lives forever. National Women’s Law Center created this video to change the situation. Join the movement to help black girls feel normal and get the same opportunities everybody else has.

Emmanuel Littlejohn has been waiting for months to find out whether he will die on Thursday or get to live. It's been "the hardest thing I ever did."
Littlejohn, 52, is set to be executed for the shooting death of a convenience store owner during a robbery in Oklahoma City in 1992. If Republican Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt declines to grant him clemency, Littlejohn will be the third inmate executed by the state this year and the 17th in the nation. He's also one of five men the U.S. is executing in a six-day period, and he's set to die just about eight hours before Alabama is expected to execute Alan Eugene Miller using nitrogen gas.
"I would say to the governor: Do what you think is the right thing," Littlejohn told USA TODAY in a recent interview.
Littlejohn has admitted to his role in the robbery but has maintained that his accomplice was the one to pull the trigger, not him.
"I accept responsibility for what I did but not what they want me to accept responsibility for," Littlejohn previously told USA TODAY. "They want me to accept that I killed somebody, but I haven't killed somebody."
In a rare move, the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board voted 3-2 to recommend clemency for Littlejohn, whose legal team argued that the evidence in the case was unclear, especially who the triggerman was.
Still, Republican Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond said afterward that his office would still be arguing against clemency to the governor, calling Littlejohn a "violent and manipulative killer."

If you’re outraged over Missouri murdering Marcellus Williams, then you should know Oklahoma is planning on carrying out an execution of Emmanuel Littlejohn this Thurs. at 10am.
Littlejohn was pardoned by the PPB. There’s still time to call the Governor: 405-521-2342.

I was able to leave a voicemail by pressing 1 then 4 then 0. After what happened in Missouri, there's an overwhelming sense of hopelessness that the care about public comments but I hope Emmanuel is able to avoid Khaliifah's fate.

Hi, the best thing to do is to call the Governor’s office directly and press 0 to be connected to a staff person. Ask that the governor respect the wishes of the pardon and parole board and grant clemency to Emmanuel Littlejohn. 405-521-2342

Emergency: Help Evacuate My Family From GAZA WAR
Dear Humanity,
I'm Haya from Gaza , from a family of 8 people: my parents, two sons, and four daughters (two of them suffer from allergies).

I've witnessed the evidence of the tragedy that has struck our lives in Gaza, where my family and I have survived amidst numerous previous wars. But today, we face the most dangerous and fierce battle in the current war. The urgent need intensifies for us, as we have nothing left and are unable to secure our basic needs such as food, water, and safe shelter.
Here is our story - On October 7th, our lives changed forever, my family and I evacuated from northern Gaza to southern Gaza, hoping to return soon, but it wasn't meant to be. Our home was surrounded, burned, and then completely destroyed, Our home, once a fortress of hope, now lay in ruins, a stark reminder of our shattered dreams.
The night before we left from the north to the south was terrifying. Shelling sounds were everywhere, making a loud noise that felt like it went through our souls. Every explosions shook the ground like earthquakes, sending shockwaves of fear through our trembling bodies. filling us with fear. The air smelled of destruction and blood, making it hard to breathe. When dawn came, we saw the devastation around us, realizing our home was now a symbol of loss and despair.
We ran into the streets and with each step we took into the unknown streets, we felt as if we were plunging deeper into the abyss of our shattered existence, leaving behind everything we own in our home: Clothes, important official documents, the car, and literally it's almost everything - the enormity of our loss weighed heavily upon us.
Our home it was where we found hope, safety, and made precious memories. Losing it felt like losing years of our lives, leaving us adrift amidst the wreckage of our shattered existence.
youtube
A brief video depicting the devastation that struck our home and our entire neighborhood in Gaza.
Desperate Plea: Escaping Gaza's Allergy Nightmare
I, Haya, suffer from severe allergy to penicillin-derived medications, and my sister, Amal, also suffers from severe allergies to medications from my family such as Paracetamol and Ibuprofen.
These allergies create a deep sense of fear and anxiety for us, as we live in a constant state of tension and fear of anything that may require a visit to the hospital. We fear being given inappropriate medications due to the unavailability of suitable treatments in Gaza because of war or lack of awareness and not informing the doctor of our allergies, which could lead to serious consequences threatening our lives.

MY Father Income

Our dreams are heading towards oblivion in the labyrinth of an uncertain future
My story, along with my siblings, represents a united team of four individuals, three of whom are skilled programmers and one graphic designer. We work as freelancers in the world of freelancing.

As for my younger sister, she is a student studying at the College of Architecture. She has always carried a big dream in her heart, a dream of being part of changing Gaza, of making it more beautiful and better. She looked forward to the day when she would receive her degree and start building this dream. But the beginning of the war changed everything. The destruction of infrastructure and universities cast shadows of despair over her dreams.

When I think of my brother in Belgium, I can't help but feel deep sadness. He has been suffering from unbearable anxiety and insomnia since the outbreak of the war. Sleep eludes him at night, and his physical and mental health collapses under the weight of these heavy burdens, negatively affecting his performance at work. Problems and challenges pile up in front of him without the slightest opportunity for rest.
We all feel psychological pressure and extreme anxiety. The war hasn't been limited to external attacks but has deeply infiltrated our daily lives. We search among the rubble for a little safety and the basic resources for survival. Every day comes with a new challenge that we must overcome.
As we sway amidst the rubble of shattered dreams, our souls wrestle and our hearts beat strongly challenging the ravages of war.
Our parents earnestly seek a way to rescue us from this hell, feeling the heavy responsibility for every moment we spend under the shadows of fear and destruction. They dream of a safe place where they can build for us a better future, filled with security and hope, for we deserve life in all its meanings of comfort and peace.
Perhaps this fundraising campaign represents a light in the midst of darkness, it is indeed the only hope we cling to firmly.
I appeal to the world as a whole to hear my cry and the mournful cry of my family in Gaza. We need the helping hand that reaches out to wipe our tears and build a bridge to safety.
Your donation is not just a donation; it's an opportunity to rebuild life and brighten a better tomorrow. Be part of our hopeful story, for we need your hand to start anew.
The purpose of the fundraising campaign
The goal of this fundraising campaign is to rescue my family - my parents, my siblings, and me - through the Rafah Crossing to Egypt, which currently requires $5000 per person. This campaign is our only chance to stay alive, and I humbly request your assistance at this critical time. I will provide you with a comprehensive breakdown of the expenses, committing to transparency and clarity.

I'm curious, what's the bigotry you see in the classpect system?/gen
Rage was very specifically made with the Makaras in mind, especially Gamzee, and the symbol is just Juggalo paint. Gamzee’s religious obsession to Insane Clown Posse is a racist stereotype against Black men- specifically about their alleged “religious devotion to Hip-Hop/Rap”, which was a much more popular myth back during his conception. Rage being fitted for Gamzee specifically is an excuse for Hussie to perpetuate the “Angry, Violent, Unstable, Drug-Addled Black Man” stereotypes as well, alongside several other things. It’s all packaged nicely under the label of “Ragebound” to make people not think about that too hard.
Rage as an Aspect can be retrofitted into something that is not a violent Anti-Black stereotype- easily, in my opinion- but as it stands, it’s pretty fucking gnarly. I know I have a whole post about the Anti-Blackness stored in the Makaras somewhere, but it’s basically all of the first negative stereotypes you can think of and then some, and Rage is a vessel to perpetuate it in a way that you can brush under the rug if you’re thinking of the characters and lore from an ignorant and purely Watsonian standpoint.

since theres a homestuck renaissance; white ppl, yall should remember abt the racist stereotypes in the webcomic and try to do better this time when portraying the characters in what you make
its upsetting that i have to see literal racist caricatures in some artwork of certain characters, and its even worse seeing artwork of the alpha/beta/humanstuck trolls being drawn with sickly green desaturated skin
im tired of seeing one thing mentioned when we talk abt the racism in this fandom, so im going to make a huge post regarding the red flags and white supremacist dogwhistles that are noticed and unnoticed within the comic:
[ - ]
content warning for poc// there’s going to be mentions of racial stereotypes, slavery, and hanging.
a lot of these points were made by people of the affected race in these stereotypes. this is not me trying to make reaches, it is just something me and other people of color have noticed.
white people, y’all don’t get a say in what is and what isn’t racist. this isn’t about you. y’all wouldn’t know. people of color, feel free to discuss your own views on this.
in this post, ive posted links that lead to what these stereotypes these characters fit in. all but one are written by black and asian people.
[ - ]
the makaras and chucklevoodoo
gamzee is a black stereotype. his father is never around, he speaks in aave that is constantly mocked and berated as “unfitting”, he does drugs, he does voodoo, he becomes violent when he’s off drugs, and later on in the story, he basically abuses the cop who is obsessed with hanging things.
him speaking in aave isn’t necessarily racist on it’s own, it’s how it was written to mock black culture. which is a common trait you see within the webcomic.
https://commonwealthtimes.org/2021/02/18/aave-is-not-your-internet-slang-it-is-black-culture/
after the webcomic was completed, he was written to be a pedophile and was involved in some weird racist cucking fetish plot point.
kurloz doesn’t talk at all, but he is portrayed as some magical, mysterious voodoo master, which is a stereotype on its own.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magical_Negro
voodoo, as always, is mischaracterized to be evil and mysterious in the webcomic, when in reality it has nothing to do with those things. it’s a real, closed religion, and as a person who family does voodoo, it’s really annoying seeing people appropriate my culture, or make it out to be evil because of a dumbass webcomic.
https://www.patheos.com/blogs/voodoouniverse/2015/09/5-voodoo-stereotypes-that-wont-die-help-me-kill-them/
the peixes
the condesce is described in the wiki to “speak like an italian mobster” when in reality she uses aave, which is another example of it being mocked. it’s used as irony because she’s a ruler who talks “informally” and is perceived as ghetto.
she is under lord english’s control. which basically means, she’s a black woman being enslaved by a white british guy.
meenah uses more aave than the condesce and is also said to “speak like a mobster.”
a common thing in the fandom is that feferi, despite literally being related to the both of them, is portrayed to be either lighter than them, or just white. this is an issue because feferi is the only one who is portrayed as nice and doesn’t speak “informally”, so it easily comes off across as extremely racist and colorist.
damara
damara is also another racist stereotype. she’s portrayed as a japanese girl who speaks in broken english and japanese google translate. she is also sexualized to hell and back within the dialogue and is basically used as just something sexual.
https://nnedv.org/latest_update/stereotypes-asian-women/
the striders
the striders are characters whos personalities all have to do with black culture. they all rap and use aave from time to time. (not to mention dave literally used the n word in his blog which was being written by a white guy)
https://www.epidemicsound.com/blog/hip-hop-the-heart-soul-of-modern-black-history/
while white people can like rap, the striders were written intentionally to be white and their whole personality, that revolves around rapping, are another example of black culture being treated as a joke. they are written to be white despite being aracial.
andrew hussie himself & the fandom
a lot of these stereotypes were written by andrew hussie, and a lot of the plot points used with them give off extremely weird white supremacist ideals.
the issues with these stereotypes is obvious. it’s a white person writing them and treating culture as a joke constantly.
and while white people can easily relate to some of the characters, it’s hard for poc to do because every 5 seconds your culture is being mocked.
it’s hard to be in a fandom where nobody really wants to talk about the racism. it’s extremely difficult to call out the racism when you do see it because nobody takes you seriously. and when they do, they just look at you like you’re crazy. for instance, my girlfriend, who is black, educated some people (who were white) on the fact that the condesce was black, and in return they called her hostile and violent.
so when someone educates you on the racial coding of characters, please listen to them. purposely being ignorant to the racist stereotypes because you want them to be white is EXTREMELY racist and disgusting.
the whole point of this post was basically to say: let’s treat poc right this time, let’s be aware of the racial stereotypes homestuck has, and let’s stop using a racist as a reliable source.

if you don't do anything else today,
Please have a moment of silence for the people who were killed instead of freed when news of emancipation finally reached the furthest corners of the american south.
have another moment for the ledgers, catalogs, and records that were burned and the homes that were destroyed to hide the presence of very much alive and still enslaved people on dozens of plantations and homesteads across the south for decades after emancipation.
and have a third moment for those who were hunted and killed while fleeing the south to find safety across the border, overseas, in the north and to the west.
black people. light a candle, write a note to those who have passed telling them what you have achieved in spite of the racist and intolerant conditions of this world, feel the warmth of the flame under your hand, say a prayer of rememberance if you are religious, place the note under the candle, and then blow it out.
if you have children, sit them down and tell them anything you know about the life of oldest black person you've ever met. it doesn't have to be your own family. tell them what you know about what life was like for us in the days, years, decades after emancipation. if you don't know much, look it up and learn about it together.
This is Juneteenth.
white people CAN interact with this post. share it, spread it.

Thanks! The layered toga is based on depictions of the Greek Muses! There’s a bunch of references in that outfit, in fact! I should explain them at some point. :3c
I made another one for Rhythm of the Devil. This one’s a little personal, so I’d rather it not be used, but I did want to show it to you. You probably already have a canonical design for the Rhythm class anyway (I’m only on chapter 20 so if it has been revealed, I probably haven’t seen it yet). The aspect symbol on the toga could definitely be better, but I’m still satisfied with it. I drew this one over the Rogue template!
-----------
I just saw this and I LOVE the colors you chose and the layered skirts. Extremely cool!

Do you have any sources for your recent "Vriska did nothing wrong" post? All googling of the phrase seems to indicate it grew far more popular in recent times, rather than the 2000's-2010's time frame you specify in your post (I only found 10 results for the phrase between 2010-16 on Google). It's possible it grew popular on the back of "Thanos Did Nothing Wrong" from when Infinity War came out, in my opinion. If you have any sources showing the phrases' origins, such as a post that popularized the phrase, or posts from early HS fans talking about it having antisemitic origins from that 2010s time frame, it would be greatly appreciated!
[Re: This Post.]
..."Thanos Did Nothing Wrong" literally came from the same source as "Vriska Did Nothing Wrong". It means the same thing. They have the same exact origin. It's still a snowclone of "Hitler Did Nothing Wrong" either way. Apologies for using KnowYourMeme as a source, but they tend to be the most accessible source for these sorts of things.
It's difficult to find results from that time period, especially if you're searching for Tumblr posts, so the fact that you can't really find many results makes sense. Searches tend to prioritize recent results, and are pretty bad at archiving things properly. What doesn't help is the fact that a lot of Homestuck blogs- and blogs in general- have been deleted by now. I can say that I did see "Vriska Did Nothing Wrong" in the early-ish 2010s. "Hitler Did Nothing Wrong" was popularized as a meme around 2012. 2012-2014 was around the peak of Homestuck's popularity, and the peak of Vriscourse.
You can choose to not believe me about the time period in which this specific iteration of the phrase was coined and popularized, and that would be fair. Would not blame you. But that does not change its origins. Whether or not you choose to believe me about the time, the source is still the same. It's not great.
All I’m trying to do is have people at least be aware of where it comes from, really. There’s no way to get people to stop using a meme due to it having dodgy origins, that, famously, is not how the internet works. Notice that my original post wasn’t a rallying cry, nor a call to action. That’s a futile fight that I’m not here to pick. All I’m here to do is inform the people who might not want to associate with the phrase’s history where that saying came from.
