1) Make it weird.
2) Make it with love.

also on the topic of rubber duck debugging, it's one of my favorite ways of resolving problems while writing anything: code or otherwise. It's such a simple concept but so useful. If you're stuck, sometimes all you you need to do is go to your rubber duck (or pet, or stuffed animal, or anything else that might be nearby and is easy to personify), explain to it step by step what you're trying to do, and promptly realize exactly what your problem is/how to fix the problem you have.
I love doing little coding things while writing. Adding comments to my scenes in python syntax. Rubber duck debugging my plot issues. Might even start software versioning my drafts. It's so silly but it brings me so much joy to find the little intersections between two of my interests that seem like they should be so disparate.
#quentin's ramblings#I learned it as a kid going to computer camp and I use it all the time for everything from my CS classes to writing essays#idk maybe everyone has already heard of it/does similar things but i explained it to an english professor once and she loved the idea#but had never heard of it#so i figured someone might find it useful

being a writer is wild
like there are some days where all the words click into place and the sentences flow like silk and then there are other days where your plot is undergoing radioactive decay and you're about to punch through your laptop screen in frustration

most important part of the writing process actually is when you loop a single song on max volume and stare at the word document and imagine the characters doing things for 14 hours. this is known as getting in the zone

worst part about writing a novel is wanting to talk about it but everything you want to talk about is a big spoiler so you just stew in silence

the trope of 'this entity exists only because we think it does' is so so so fucking good and cannot be overdone in my opinion
like the idea that you built the monster hunting you, that you invited the entity into our world, that your fear is what it feeds on, and that once made real, it cannot possibly be killed because you're stuck in this loop of 'he's real because i'm scared' and 'i'm scared because he's real'

I love it when the unreliable narrator begins to trip and reveal the flaws in their story and themself. I cannot explain how much I adore them. The moment you realize that "wait, something is not right" and start to rethink the whole book is the absolute best thing to happen to you while reading. You just know the reread will be even better.
