It’s been a minute, huh? Life and work are funny things that tend to get in the way of hunting ghosts and cryptids. Regardless, we’ve found an abandoned property here in Austin we’ll be visiting soon. Here’s a few pics of it we snapped this evening!

long time, no spook
We’ve been a bit lacking on this blog lately, as C has started a new job and J has been regularly working over-time these past few weeks. Additionally, we are in between leases, and being in limbo like this makes things difficult, but we move into our new apartment together in August. Activity will most definitely pick up again at that time. In the mean time, we do have a little expedition planned to the Barton Creek Greenbelt--we hope you’ll join us, as we do plan on live streaming the expedition on our Instagram. Stay tuned for the announcement of the date!

The Flatwoods Monster
Region of origin: Braxton County, West Virginia
In the late summer of 1952 in Braxton county, there was a rash of monster and UFO sightings, and while specifics varied greatly from account to account, the most documented case among them was the initial encounter in the forests near the village of Flatwoods, where a group of five children and one of their parents went exploring after what they thought might have been a UFO landing or crashing. Heading towards the area where the light they had seen seemed to settle, they found the area permeated by a pungent mist which left them with stinging eyes or a nauseous feeling, and some would later be treated for effects similar to exposure to mustard gas. As they continued through the woods they found what they described as a large, slender figure, looming 10-12 feet tall and seemingly either mechanical or wearing some kind metallic outfit or casing that fanned out near the bottom resembling an apron or frock, and a spade-shaped cowl surrounding its round, red face. The figure’s large eyes lit up bright enough to illuminate the surrounding woods, then hissed and moved towards the group, levitating slightly off the ground. The group ran away as it approached them and later came back with some local law enforcement and media to inspect the area who found nothing at the site other than some lingering trace of the gas’ scent and what appeared to be a black oil. After the story got out, there was reports of a mother and daughter coming forward to say they had seen a similar creature at their farm, and later another nearby sighting of a reptilian figure whose lower body was encased in the same floating, metallic base as the Flatwoods monster.

Watch Out For Them Kappas
Watch Out For Them Kappas
In Japanese folklore, one of the most recognized yokai is the Kappa. Legends described this entity with the face of a monkey with the beak of a turtle and the top of his head has a plate-shaped depression. The Kappa has green, reptilian skin and often has a turtle shell on his back. Many myths mention this yokai has webbed hands and feet along with the ability to elongate its arms and legs

Wildlife adventurer and biologist Forrest Galante and his crew set up camera traps on the new Animal Planet show Extinct or Alive to try and find a Zanzibar Leopard. Incredibly, it is quite possible that they did! The Zanzibar Leopard was thought to have been hunted to extinction 25 years ago. Galante and his crew broke into excited screams and cheers. He later stated, “That’s what my show’s about. It’s about hope, and the hope the things we human beings have wiped off the face of the Earth may be hanging on by a thread.”

This is the most famous photo of Champ, the Lake Champlain monster. It was taken in 1977 by Sandra Mansi who was out with her family on the lake. As her sons waded in the water and she and her fiancé looked after them, Sandra noticed what she thought was a school of fish about 150 yards from the shore. After a little bit “the head and neck broke the surface of the water” and when her fiancé quickly ushered her sons out of the water, she snapped the photo with her camera. Sandra estimates the creature surfaced for four to seven minutes as they watched it. The original photo has been looked at by several experts and they can find no evidence of tampering with the photo to fake it. As of now, this is the most solid evidence of a monster in Lake Champlain.

Project idea?
We’re moving forward with the instagram live stream cryptid hunts, but we’re also wondering if anyone would be interested in seeing videos of us? Perhaps like compilation cuts of our hunts, or us sitting down and doing info discussions about cryptids and ghosts? Let us know if that seems fun!

Expedition 06/14-06/18
Hey y’all! We’re planning on having a small expedition in about a week and a half. We’ll be traveling to a lake about four hours northeast of Austin. It’s J’s birthday weekend, and we’ll be staying in a family’s cabin they’re letting us borrow. There aren’t any famous cryptids or ghosts but there’s plenty of local legends to look in to. We may live stream some of it on our Instagram, and we’ll post our findings the week after we get back. Wish us luck!

When it rains, water pools in the forest behind our house, turning it into a mini swamp for a few days. There was a huge downpour the other day, so I took my camera and went out to take some pictures, as it’s kind of pretty and a little spooky, After snapping the first photo, I noticed the bright smear across the screen. I thought it might be a weird trick of the light, so I took another one, in the exact same position, but this one came back without the smear. Strange.
Bright little orb, isn’t it?
C and I have made an Instagram! Once we reach 100 followers on there we’ll be live streaming our cryptid hunts. Follow if that’s something you’d be interested in! It’s @cryptidhunteratx on Insta.
