"these researchers published a paper on something that literally any of us could have told you 🙄" ok well my supervisors wont let me write something in my thesis unless I can back it up with a citation so maybe it's a good thing that they're amplifying your voice to the scientific community in a way that prevents people from writing off your experiences as annecdotal evidence

There’s a quote from Bert where he says he‘s “known big bird since he was a little bird” and the thought of it makes my heart cry so here’s that

I think every lesbian who says she wouldn't date a bi woman is functionally on the same wavelength as men who say they would only marry a virgin

A good rule of thumb for AI is "would you trust a trained pigeon to do this?"
"We trained a pigeon to recognise cancerous cell clusters and somehow they're really good at it" okay great, that's something that could plausibly be a thing.
"We trained a pigeon to recognise good CV:s and left it in charge of sorting through all our job applications" uh perhaps consider not doing that.

It's impressive how Neil Gaiman vanished from the internet. Wish Rowling would do the same.

My favourite story that is related to this is one of my colleagues. He's in his 50s and knows and understands fuck all about LGBTQIA+ people. He understands that there's gay people and that's about it. When I came out as bisexual I had to explain what that was.
Now, we got a couple of trans students. He was very confused. He understood that they wanted to be called different pronouns than he initially labeled them and he understands it's hurtful to call them the wrong pronouns. So he tries his best to never get it wrong, especially when those students are around.
Then one day in our break room he asked me about what "transgender" even means and how do those people know? And they're so young! And why is it so important to them? And what ELSE is he unaware of. And he's asking me because, in his words: "I'm not going to ask our students because I know it'll come across all wrong even if my intentions are good. You're older and know me better, you know I just want to understand it better!"
So I answered all his questions best I could. Then at one point he goes. I do love how inclusive the LHBTI (Dutch acronym) is, you even include us hetero people!"
So I kind of look at him weirdly - maybe he is talking about gender queer people who are straight? A level of understanding I didn't expect.
"yeah the H in LHBTI for Hetero (straight)!"
I couldn't answer anymore, it was so out of left field I ended up crying of laughter, and another colleague had to cut in and go "uh, that's for homosexuality." I eventually managed to ask if he thought the G from LGBTQ stood for Gaytero. He seemed confused and a little miffed.
It's been about a year. I still tease him occasionally.
Mind you he still doesn't really understand, but he respects and cares about our students enough to want to get it right. And in the end, even if he doesn't completely understand - isn't that what is most important? To have enough respect and decency to respect the other person, and to want and try to understand.
not to sound like a weak, morally impure centrist over here, but i think online leftist communities need to be a little more accepting of the concept that most people are just. not that well informed. we live in a society that provides access to an overwhelming amount of information and yet which discourages actually diving into much beyond the surface level. Most of the people you meet out in the world are just not gonna know much about a lot of what you care about, but that's not the same as being against those things, or being unwilling to learn, or being unnamenable to those ideas. Our modern society is an unending cascade of information and misinformation and disinformation and filtering through that shit enough to actually have a solid grasp of a subject, let alone a nuanced antiestablishment political take, is a skill that takes time and effort to develop, time and effort that is in very short supply. It really bothers me when I see leftists talk about how capitalism keeps us down by taking up all our time and energy and making recovery, both physical and emotional, cost what little we can afford, and then turn around and get upset that people are politically uninformed. On some level, you gotta meet some people where they are, and have a little faith in them to be open to new ideas and information. Ignorance is not inherently intentional, and it's not the same as antipathy.
#lgbtqia#people can respect it even if they dont understand it#the H for Hetero lmao#i swear this man#he has a big mouth but a heart of gold#he cares even if he doesn't get it
