Sebastian stared at the poster tacked to the tree in confusion. BIRDS ARENâT REAL: Wake Up, Katmere! It proudly proclaimed. Below was a picture of a pigeon labeled GOVERNMENT SURVEILLANCE DRONE. This really was a stretch as far as conspiracy theories went. How could anyone, especially paranormals, fall for such a baseless idea? Theyâve lived to see governments rise and fall, and seen birds way before any electronics existed. The worst part of the poster, though, was probably the sharpied in -but Mothman is! next to a sticker of his dadâs head photoshopped onto a shadowy mothman figure. He rolled his eyes and moved to remove the poster, declaring, âThis is fucking ridiculous.â
Dain had been doing weird research for their show which was normal. They liked the weird stuff they had to look into for their show. Some conspiricies are strange and they wanted to highlight some of the more obscure ones on the air. Honestly they didnât know how popular their radio show was. It was fun getting to look at different experiments. âWhatâs fucking ridiculous?â they asked, tilting their head and trying to figure out what exactly about the poster the other was talking about. âOh. Iâm interviewing one of the bird society people tonight on my radio show. You should listen. Havenât spoken about Mothman yet. Wait... is that professor Mann?â Theyâd never seen the man before.Â

âOh sorry,â Felix said he usually used dude as a generic term for anyone but if the other didnât like it heâd try to catch himself. Felix started grabbing the stuff to start the noodles
âSo why are you up so late?â Felix asked him as he started on his task of making midnight snack for the two of them
âalso french fried onions and pease or just the macaroni and tuna?â Felix asked him grabbing a can of peas, he hated using canned ingredients but fresh vegetables werenât ideal for dorm room storage.Â
Dain knew that some people used that word as something more neutral than what they were used to, but Dain really didnât like it for them. They would rather people use gender neutral terms. âItâs okay,â Dain replied, then pointed to the badge on their shirt that had their pronouns on it. Theyâd paid a wix to charm it so it matched how they felt.Â
âI donât really sleep. Never have.â They shrugged. âWhat about you?â Dain wanted to be able to sleep better, but their brain never really quit and it was a problem. They used to have pills to make them sleep, going off to grad school though, they didnât keep up with it.Â
âUm, just the mac, I think. I donât really like onions, the texture is weird to me.â Dain shrugged. Cooking wasnât something theyâd ever been good at.Â

âThatâs dumb, then. Youâre fae enough that youâre here, that should make you fae enough to be allowed into your Court.â ZoĂ« said, getting enraged on their behalf. She couldnât imagine not being allowed entry into the Dragon Court. âOh, yeah. We went for Wyvernhoard once. It was way better than the celebration back home. Well, not better but bigger. It wasnât even really fancier, because wealth isnât much of an issue for dragons, what with the hoards and all.â ZoĂ« wasnât sure that they would even know what Wyvernhoard was, but it was really the only reason sheâd ever gone to the Dragon Court. Her parents didnât want to deal with the hassle of rounding up all of their children, so when they were needed only one of the two of them went. âThatâs not really flying. I mean, sure, it gets you there, but it probably takes a lot of focus, right? So you donât get to enjoy it as much. I donât have to think about flapping my wings. Like how you donât think about walking, right? You just do it.â ZoĂ« thought for a moment, and then shrugged. âIâm not sure. I havenât been there before. Itâs not like thereâs a map that shows all of the wards that exist in the world. It would rather defeat the purpose of putting up wards.â
âWell thanks, I appreciate the vote of confidence but I can assure you that I canât. I feel like I need to remind you that weâre dragons.â
âThatâs not how the fae court works,â they shrugged. Honestly it never bothered them theyâd never been to the other courts either, so why did it matter that the fae were different about their courts? Dain didnât really care all that much since they liked their home town. âOh, well thatâs fun.â They honestly didnât really know what Wyvernhold was, but they werenât going to say that when it was clearly something they should have known about. Dain didnât know about the supernatural world that much. While theyâd gone to a supernatural college, theyâd been busy with school. There was clearly a reason that Dain was paying attention to the daily lives of the other species. âYeah, I guess. It is more like manipulating the air, but itâs fun. Iâm the only one in my family that can fly.â The rest of their family was not as powerful, except for their father. âThatâs true. I guess you just gotta be careful.âÂ
âDragons. Right. Itâs so weird that dragons exist. Like youâre really not a human, youâre a dragon.â They didnât think that half fae was as weird. âLike if you can exist then... mothman can too.âÂ

âYes itâs fun. No, thereâs nothing weird or magic about the sand.â Imogene thought it was such a interesting art form. She wasnât that skilled at it, but half the fun of it was just having fun with the experience of it. It was something delicate, one wrong move and you messed the whole thing up. But there was something incredibly satisfying about it, as well. Imogene felt a pang of sadness, when they said that their mom was their only Valentine growing up. She wanted to ask about mothman, but wasnât going to pry. âYou didnât have internet until you were fifteen?â
âHuh,â they shrugged. They had never done anything like this before. There was only the one fair in their town that Dain and their family attended and it was the festival for Mothman, so that was that. âI guess thereâs no harm in trying something.â There were a lot of things that Dain had never done before in their lifetime. Some people found it odd, but honestly their family was a bit eccentric anyways, so they didnât really mind. âWell, yeah. Ma thought it was better that we read and listened to the radio. We had television, but I never liked it. My dad was always away on some work trip, so we entertained each other with stories. Or you know, looking for cryptids in the woods. And then when we finally did get internet, I just sort of preferred books and talk radio. But I realize Iâm weird. When you grow up in a town like mine, small and kinda in the middle of nowhere, things are done differently. What about you? What kind of place did you grow up in?âÂ

Felix was relieved that he didnât seem to be in trouble, plus hearing there was someone to properly eat the food he made was better than nothing. Felix gestured to a chair then
âDude as long as you donât get me in trouble you can eat as much as you want.â Felix assured him before he looked at what he had
âOk so I can make, tuna mac, chicken tacos, or a vegetarian dhansak thatâll take me like fifteen minutes to whip up.â Felix said he had all the ingredients heâd need for those right? he mostly had veggies anyway so those were probably the best options he had of everything there.
College was a much different experience than Dain was used to, at least as far as their ability to deal with people. Then again, the town they were from was very small and they knew all their neighbors. But the freedom they had was nice. Being able to go where they wanted and do as they pleased was nice.Â
âIâm not really a dude, but I wonât get you into trouble.â They really didnât want to get into that whole thing right now though. âAs long as you donât call me dude again, I wonât get you in trouble. Although you canât really get into trouble. Itâs not like youâre throwing a party.â That would be a different story, they thought.Â
Dain thought for a second. âUm. Tuna mac sounds like the best of those options.âÂ

POOLE: What do you like that others consider niche?
âI mean... thereâs one answer and thatâs cryptids. Also crime, but you know, neither of those subjects are really knowable, so do I really know anything. I guess also talk radio is kind of niche. I know lots about the history of radio. And Iâm good at taking things apart. Not putting them back together though.âÂ

SOULMATES: Do you believe in soulmates?
âUm, I donât know. I read somewhere that no one really knows how the magic works and itâs kind of sentient, so itâs different with different people. I also read that some people have more than one soulmate. If they are, I think Iâd like that to be true. âCause Iâm think I feel more comfortable with that.âÂ

KENNEDY: Have you ever felt like an outsider before? If not, what makes you feel like you belong in your social circle?
âI always feel like an outsider. I think itâs because since Iâm supernatural, I donât belong in the mortal world, but since Iâm only half fae, I also donât belong in the fae world either. Iâve never felt like I belong anywhere other than with my siblings and parents.â

âOh.â ZoĂ« said, simply. She felt rather like an idiot. But how could she have known? Itâs not like dragons were barred entry from the Dragon Court. Sure, sometimes you needed to make an appointment if you wanted to talk to someone of import, but if she was in the city and needed help, she could go to the Court and get what she needed. Not to mention how they made sure everyone got some of the hoard on Wyvernhoard, no matter where you were celebrating from. âThat kind of sucks. Youâre fae, you should be allowed in your Court.â ZoĂ« just could not wrap her mind around that, not being allowed into your Court. âIâm pretty content to be a dragon, so I canât say that the thought has ever really crossed my mind. I mean⊠I can fly, why would I want to change that?â The thought of not having her dragon freaked her out, honestly. âPossibly, but Iâm pretty sure that the wards wouldnât let them find the island.â
âNo, no, not a physical fight. There was some verbal sparring that happened.â
It wasnât as if people met that many fae. As far as Dain was aware, they were private people. They had only met a few fae people and they were part fae. Dain wondered if that was not normal for supernaturals or if it was an odd fae thing. âIâm half fae, though. Thatâs just not how things are done.â Although since a faeâs power was tied to the queen, technically they were allowed to have the power. Sometimes Dain wondered why they were allowed to have their power. âHave you ever been to your court? Is that normal?â Sometimes they didnât understand the supernatural world. âI can also fly! Well, it isnât actually flight like with wings. It can manipulate the air around me and fly that way.â Dain nodded. âIs that why I canât find Mothman? Are there wards in Point Pleasant?âÂ
âBet you could still still take them in a physical fight.âÂ

âNo, no.â Imogene said, shaking her head. âYou take these different shaped bottles and fill them with different colors of sand! Itâs fun! You get to be creative and you can make some really funky stuff.â She pointed towards the displays. âItâs the Valentineâs Fair! Thereâs all sorts of stuff going on. Bake goods, crafts, flowers, a kissing booth. Games. Food. You know, fair things.â
âThat... sounds... unusual. And this is fun? Thereâs nothing weird about the sand? It isnât magic or anything?â This sounded like a strange activity and they didnât know what the point of it was. Though maybe that was just their small town upbringing. âOh, interesting. I guess. The only Valentine I had was my mom growing up. And well.... mothman once, but we donât talk about that.â Dain looked around. âAlright. Letâs do this sand art thing. I never really thought I was sheltered, but I guess not having internet at home until I was like fifteen probably helped with it.âÂ

@dainhartâ
Okay so maybe it was midnight and he technically wasnât supposed to be using the community kitchen in his dorm this late but he woke up positively starving andâŠ.well he was a culinary arts major he had to see what he could experiment with right?Â
So against his better judgement felix grabbed all the food out of his mini fridge into a crate and headed to the kitchen to see what he could whip up hoping to be quiet but uhâŠ.clearly that didnât happen when he turned around and noticed he wasnât alone anymore.
âUhâŠsorry i couldnât sleep.â Felix said glancing at the now messy counter that heâd have to clean up before bed.Â
Dain didnât have a prime spot on the radio, even though they thought they really should have a better spot. Their show was much more entertaining compared to some of the shows that other people did. Especially all those music shows. The radio should be mixed with both talk and music. Or maybe their show was much better suited for podcast form. Dain wasnât sure what the problem was. So two times a week, they got back to the dorms at a ridiculously late hour.Â
Tonight, they were starving, but if there was one thing they were not historically good at, it was cooking. Their mother had tried to teach them, but she got annoyed after a while when all Dain did was make a mess of the kitchen and end up with inedible food. Mostly they survived off the cafeteria foods. But apparently, they werenât the only one needing a midnight snack.
âUh, youâre okay. Iâm not campus security or anything. Just looking for a snack. Or dinner.âÂ

âOh, look, sand art! I havenât done that in ages. Come on, you have to do it with me!â Imogene said, turning to the person standing next to her. She could do it alone, of course, but it would be more fun with some company. And she wasnât above begging to get it, either. âPlease? Look how cute! And itâs for a good cause, Iâm sure!â
Dain hadnât realized that there was even an event going on here today. And then they remembered there had been a pink poster in one of the buildings and while they hadnât read it, Dain imagined thatâs what was being advertised. âWhat is sand art?â they asked, looking at the booth, confused. âIs it like... making glass?â This was not the thing that Dain did back home. âIâm not even sure whatâs going on here today.âÂ

âMm.â ZoĂ« said, nodding her head in agreement. She had also grown up away from big cities and while sheâd have liked a bit more excitement in her life, more exposure to the wider supernatural community, she did appreciate the way that she had grown up. âDo you need permission to, or something? Youâre fae, donât they have to let you in? Youâre not, like, a criminal, right?â Not that she would just them if they were a criminal, but it seemed like a valid question to ask. âThanks. I think that you should still be pretty proud of who you are. I mean, itâs not like we can pick what species weâre born as, right?â ZoĂ« couldnât help but laugh, at that. âI wasnât making any assumptions. Besides, weâre on an island in the middle of nowhere. Itâs not like you can just wander on in. I figured you were supposed to be here. âUh, I mean I convinced them to let me come here, and let my brothers pick where they wanted to go to school, soâŠâ She trailed off, shrugging.
Being part of a large family like they were, Dain was used to bustling places, even if theyâd never been to an actual city before. Sometimes they wondered how well they did at blending into societyâand then they realized they didnât care. Society was weird and awful and boring. They were weird and nothing else. âHalf-fae arenât permitted inside the courts unless they have permission from one of the queens. My dad might be super helpful to the fae queen of the Summer Court, but heâs not like⊠important enough that heâd gotten permission for all of us. I think itâs different for us.â Dain sometimes wondered if their own magic was tied to their dads. What happened if their dad fell out of favor with the queen? Would their power disappear? Would that make them all human? Dain didnât want to know. âWell, no, but wouldnât it be kind of cool if you could? Like imagine one day I wake up and just decide I feel like being a wix? Wouldnât that be fun?â It would be chaotic. âIâm sure thatâs happened once or twice. A random person lost at sea. That couldâve been me.â They laughed. âWait⊠so not an actual fight?â Dain blinked.Â

âCool. That sounds⊠interesting.â ZoÄ said. It really wasnât of any interset to her, but the kid was clearly very interested in it so she was trying her best not to hurt their feelings. There were a lot of things that she wanted to see in the world, but a Mothman festival was just⊠not one of them. There were plenty of mortal festivals that she was interested in, but one about Mothman was not on the list. âOh. Neat. I didnât know that. Thanks for telling me.â ZoĂ« said, deciding not to pry about their dad. They werenât the first fae that ZoĂ« had met, but she always felt it was rude to just ask questions. Sheâd read some books and sheâd picked up a couple of tidbits here and there. âIâm ZoĂ«, junior. Iâm a dragon. Thatâs pretty cool, I donât think Iâve ever met anyone thatâs half fae before. But then again, Iâd never met anyone who was fae before I came here.â Realizing how that came off she added, âMy parents kept my siblings and I in dragon only schools. I had to fight them to come here.â
âYeah, itâs a quaint little town. It was nice not having to grow up in a big city.â Their town was known for the one thing and the one thing only: mothman. But they didnât care because it was nice getting to meet different tourists who liked the same sorts of things that Dain was interested in. âYeah, I donât know a lot of first hand information on some things, but Iâd like to eventually know more about the different courts. One day Iâd like to visit.â But they only ever let fae into their courts and since they were half mortal, they had never been before. âA dragon!? Thatâs so cool. Much cooler than half fae, I think.â Dain had met a few dragons before, but usually they didnât talk that much about being a dragon. âMy parents made me go to mortal school, but I did graduate from a magical college. Iâm a grad student. Not some old creep hanging around college students.â Dain tilted their head to the side. âWell, Iâm glad you were able to win the fight against your parents. I hope you bested them in the grandest of fights.âÂ
