VIRTUAL SKETCHBOOK 4
WRITING, THINKING AND LOOKING CRITICALLY
Jackson Pollock's transition from using abstract imagery to removing all imagery in his "drip" paintings can be seen as a gradual evolution over time. While studying with Thomas Hart Benton, Pollock was exposed to the techniques of regionalism, which emphasized representational art that celebrated American life. However, Pollock's interests shifted towards abstraction after exposure to the works of other famous artists such as Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró. He began experimenting with abstract forms, which gradually became more prominent in his paintings.
During this time, Pollock also struggled with alcoholism and depression, which contributed to his shift towards a more expressive, improvisational style of painting. His "drip" paintings, which he is most famous for, were created by pouring, splattering, and dripping paint onto a canvas on the floor. This technique allowed him to create dynamic and spontaneous compositions without the constraint of figurative imagery.
In many ways, Pollock's "drip" paintings were a culmination of his artistic development up to that point. They represented a rejection of traditional art forms and a celebration of the creative process and the physical act of painting. The resulting works were highly influential in the development of Abstract Expressionism and continue to be studied and appreciated for their innovative techniques and expressive power.

Title: Lamentation over the Dead Christ
Culture/Place: Dutch Golden Age
Media: Oil on Canvas
Date: 1650
Visual Analysis
"Lamentation over the Dead Christ" is a painting located at the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida. The painting is oil on Canvas and measures approximately 86 inches by 90 inches. It depicts the body of Jesus Christ after his crucifixion. The figure of Christ lies on a white cloth, which is draped over a rock or tomb. Surrounding Christ are five mourners who are grieving his death. The figures are depicted with deep emotion, as they lament the loss of their leader.
The painting is rendered in a style known as the International Gothic, which was popular in Europe during the 14th and 15th centuries. The figures are elongated, and their features are delicate and refined. The colors used in the painting are muted and subdued, with shades of brown, gray, and blue predominating.
One of the striking features of the painting is the attention to detail in the figures' clothing. The mourners are depicted wearing elaborate robes and headdresses, which are decorated with intricate patterns and symbols. The clothing is rendered with great precision, and the folds and drapery are carefully studied to create a sense of movement and realism.
"Lamentation over the Dead Christ" is a powerful work of art that evokes a sense of sadness, grief, and mourning. The painting's composition, style, and use of color all contribute to the emotional impact of the scene, creating a vivid and moving portrayal of one of the most significant events in Christian history.
The Ringling Museum has this work of art listed as one of Rembrandt van Rijn's art, however, it is believed that the painting was actually created by the Italian Renaissance artist Andrea Mantegna, not the Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn and to this day, the description noted at the Ringling Museum states that it is a collaborative piece by Rembrandt and his students.
Religion has inspired amazing pieces of art over time, and this is the main reason why chose this piece, as it depicts one of the most important religious events in history. Additionally, this piece is important to society for its artistic and cultural significance, its religious meaning for Christians, and its ability to convey universal themes of grief and loss. As a public work of art, it provides a valuable resource for cultural and educational enrichment, contributing to the broader social and intellectual development of society.

2. Writing and Looking
I Saw the Figure 5 In Gold by Charles Demuth (Chapter 4, Page 1)

"I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold" is a painting by American modernist artist Charles Demuth. The painting is part of his series of Precisionist works, which are characterized by their emphasis on geometric shapes and clean lines.
In this particular work, Demuth has assembled a number of visual elements to create a distinctive composition. The central focus of the painting is the figure "5" in gold, which is positioned in the center of the canvas. The figure is surrounded by a network of angular lines and shapes, which give the composition a sense of structure and stability. The background is a flat, solid color, which serves to highlight the boldness and simplicity of the central figure.
Demuth's use of color in the painting is also notable. The golden figure 5 is a striking contrast to the background, and its warm hue is balanced by the cool blue of the surrounding shapes. The overall effect is a harmonious balance of color, form, and structure, which gives the painting its distinctive character and visual impact.
In summary, the elements assembled in "I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold" include a central figure 5 in gold, a network of angular lines and shapes, a flat solid color background, and a harmonious balance of color.
3. Connecting Art to your World.
Color plays a significant role in my life, affecting my emotions, mood, and perception of the world around me. The gorgeous sun with its hue of red and yellow warms me both inside and out and brightens my day. I also like the intensity displayed by the moon which saturates the night skies with richness and purity of color. Colors in nature have the power of evoking feelings and convey meaning, and even influencing my behavior, making it an important aspect of my life.

What makes it a good interactive design in my opinion is that it allows a cool interaction with the user by capturing attention with a combination of sounds and visuals. The intent of the site is to increase sales through immersive customer experience by connecting the products with the user. I believe this interactive experience will likely yield the expected results because allowing the customer to connect with the different products helps promote the brand and easily offer a wide array of products.

1. Hi, my name is Daniella and I am just starting college this spring. I love drawing, painting, watching videos, and listening to music.
I was assigned the Jackson Pollock 1950 Autumn Rhythm (Number 30). Enamel on canvas; 105” x 207”. I think it is an abstract and although it is a nice work of art, I am not very fond of this style.
2. • Autumn Rhythm was made in the fall of 1950 at Pollock's studio in Springs New York.
• Pollock gave the painting the title Number 30, and it was exhibited under that name at the Betty Parsons Gallery in 1951.
• Pollock gave his works numbers rather than titles in order not to distract viewers with implied meanings.
• Paul Jackson Pollock was an American painter and a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement.
• Pollock was widely noticed for his "drip technique" of pouring or splashing liquid household paint onto a horizontal surface.
3. As mentioned above, I am not very fond of this particular style (abstract/splatter). It is difficult for me to understand how the artist is looking to portray an image of autumn through this painting, although I understand that it is a unique form of expression in art form. I am sure that I will learn to appreciate more about this and other styles after completing this course and I am looking forward to learning about art in general. I do have admiration for Pollock, as he is a well known artist with impressive skills.

2. ART AND WRITING
This is a painting I have in my room. It is an image of two characters I created hanging out at the London Bridge. It was painted by my father in acrylic on canvas a while ago, because the storyline for my characters was in London. I believe this is a very beautiful piece of art, and it has a special meaning for me, not only because my dad painted it for me, but also because it was a way of giving life to my characters Lenny, the train conductor, and Susie.
3. WRITING A SELF PORTRAIT
My name is Daniella, I am 18 years old, of Hispanic ethnicity and was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I recently started working as Crew Member at Wendy's, home of the "Best Fries, no Lies." I have been passionate about art since I was a little girl, I enjoy drawing, painting and would love to learn about computer animation someday.
My favorite pass time is watching videos, listening to music and I also enjoy playing video games.
