Hey trans dudes and trans people who wear binders:
your chest is actually flatter than it seems. Things are just blown out of proportion when you look down at yourself. You’re actually flatter than that in real life. to other people, it just looks like you have cool pecs. I promise.

hey trans friends
if you need binders/breast forms/makeup/etc but don’t want your parents to know, now is the best time to get it.
you can order whatever it is online and when the package comes in if the ask what it is you can say something like “it’s a secret!” or even just sssh them. they’ll assume it’s a present for whatever holiday you celebrate and probably won’t press the issue.

Dysphoria Tips Masterpost
Emery, Lee, and Charlie say:
Hey, everyone! Dysphoria is a real pain in the butt to deal with, and we know it can be difficult to find ways to lessen it or distract yourself from it. You don’t need to have dysphoria to be transgender, but many (if not most) trans people do have dysphoria. And gender dysphoria (for those who have it) just sucks.
Since we get a lot of asks from people who are looking for tips to help manage their dysphoria, we thought we would make a masterpost to help everyone out. So, this is some added advice from the mods on coping with it! The key is distraction, and trying to remember that it will get better one day. Here we go!

General Tips
Making a music playlist of your favorite songs!
You can also explore new music on YouTube, or check out some CDs from your local library.
We had a whole assortment of recommendations a while ago for music that helps people when they feel dysphoric because they can sing along. You could try to sing along to music, or lip synch if that makes you feel better, or just listen to your fav songs!
Cleaning or tidying and/or doing laundry; doing something to make your environment/surroundings better can also give you a sense of accomplishment.
Name and pronoun affirmations
You can make yourself some cards with your name and pronouns on them and carry them with you, or doodle in a notebook or make virtual edits and/or ask supportive friends and family to verbally participate in these affirmations
Wearing clothes that you feel good in (shoes, hats, dresses, sweaters, accessories etc.)
Taking up a hobby that you find enjoyable (skateboarding, making bracelets, writing, learning a new language, playing an instrument, joining a tabletop gaming club, etc.)
Watching YouTube videos (let’s-plays are Emery’s fav, and Lee likes music videos)
Dyeing your hair and/or getting a haircut (this can make you feel like a million bucks).
Info on getting short hair is here for transmasc people!
Transfemme people could try buying some cute hairclips or headbands from CVS or another store, which are small enough to easily hide if you’re in the closet.
Check out our dysphoria tag! You’ll see other suggestions on things to do, and Qs from other people who are dysphoric. Remember, you aren’t alone.
Journal about how you feel.
You could have one journal for negative things, because it feels good to get them out, and another journal for positivity and notes to yourself. Or you could write everything all in one place, it’s up to you.
You could also post on a private sideblog, or type in notes on your phone if you don’t have access to a physical journal
Practice some grounding/calming/meditation techniques.
Soothing grounding exercise
Physical grounding exercise
Mental grounding exercise
Grounding techniques
It’s a good idea to do something that makes you feel extra valid as your gender, like packing, binding, tucking, and wearing breast forms.
Maybe trans feminine individuals could put on makeup, or clear nail polish, or use flower-scented body wash when they shower. We have info on tucking here.
Trans masculine people could put on a button up, or masculine-coded clothing, or make a beard with makeup. We have info on binding without a binder here, and packing without a packer here.
Practicing Self-care, ex. taking a bath with a bath bomb (if that doesn’t induce dysphoria) to wind down. Maybe having tea and going to bed early?
You feel like sh*t: interactive self care
Talking to and getting in touch with other trans friends/people you may know, who will understand what you’re going through and are willing to support you is important!
If you don’t have a GSA at your school, PFLAG meetings in a nearby town, or any other local LGBT support groups, online community can be helpful too.
Take a walk and/or exercise a bit!! Even if you’re unable to do that because of disabilities, get some fresh air and new scenery if you can.
Find little things to appreciate about your body, or try not to think about it at all. Remember, this is about what helps you best, and it’s different for everyone.
Spend time with a pet, if you have one!
Try to work on planning your transition. Have a goal, and plan how you’ll get there.
Gather information about legally changing your name where you live when you turn 18 or the age of legal adulthood, read up on the effects of hormones, look at different surgery techniques and surgeons and prices, etc. We have info on some of the above in our transfeminine and transmasculine resource pages.
Start saving money now, even if it’s only a few dollars a month, or a few coins. When you turn 18, you’ll be informed and ready to start your transition, even if it involves saving money for a few years after to be able to afford it if your insurance doesn’t cover it fully. It’s possible, and you can do it!
Watch other people’s transition videos, and read their transition blogs. Again, this may help or make it worse, but you will be better prepared.
Go to your local public library and read a book, if you can! That might distract you, and it can be either fun or educational or both.
You can also see if they have any programs/events coming up, or see if they have any museum/zoo passes you could check out.
Listen to music, wear comfy clothes, curl up with a blanket, and chill out. Be cozy!
Have a countdown until you’re 18 (you could use an app or write it in a calendar) or a countdown until you’re able to get a new shirt, or whatever you’re looking forward to. Countdowns can be motivating.
Get organized! Clean things, sort through your things, make lists of what you need to do, color code, or whatever you want. It’ll help take your mind off things, and you’ll be helping yourself later.
Make your own Activity list of things you can do to help with dysphoria or distract yourself. Try to include as many healthy options as you can!
Include 3 things minimum that you know you’ll be able to do, like putting on affirming underwear or going on a walk for example, but make sure it’s three things specifically that you can do.
Include 3 goals you will have to work harder to do, like maybe exercising or filling out a DBT or CBT worksheet.
Tips For When Dysphoria Makes You Want To Self-Harm
Holding an ice cube in your hand
Writing in a journal (it can be extremely therapeutic)
Listening to music
Playing a video game (a puzzle game or fighting game might be particularly helpful since they require a lot of concentration)
Going for a walk (exercise can produce feel-good endorphins in your brain)
Watching a funny youtube video or doing tongue-twisters (laughter also produces endorphins)
Taking a hot shower (they’re particularly great for relieving tension)
Practicing breathing techniques (inhale for 8 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 8 seconds and Belly breathing)
Drinking tea (something like chamomile, mint, or peppermint is best)
Coloring (I personally really like ones that feature Disney characters!)
You can google “Coloring pages” and just print some out! I (Lee) like mandalas
Reach out to a friend or family member; they can distract you, and it’s harder to do anything when you’re in the company of others.
We have more info on coping when you want to self-harm here.

Most self care posts on this website, while certainly well-intended, don’t work for me. I’ve put together this compilation of tactics that help me feel better whenever I’m depressed or dysphoric, as I thought other trans dudes might appreciate the advice. You are allowed to be masculine. It’s okay to seek out activities that reinforce your masculinity, and help you feel like the man you really are!
Of all the things that help me feel better, weightlifting is possibly the best. It’s a quintessentially manly activity, and helps to improve overall fitness/muscular strength. I’m not on Testosterone yet, but lifting weights still changes my physique, and will pay off when do I eventually begin taking hormones. Lifting weights around other men makes me feel fantastic, and after the first few sessions I stopped feeling like the odd one out.
I do bind while I lift weights, but that’s because I’ve become used to doing so, and I compensate for this by not binding for a stretch of time afterwards. If you do intend to bind while weightlifting, be sure to listen to your body, because everyone’s limits are different.
You should also ensure you know how to lift weights generally. Start off light, even if there’s a strong temptation to lift heavy weights in order to speed up your progress. Keep your core strong, and don’t allow your back to curve forward, because it’s a typical rookie mistake most guys make when trying to lift too heavy too quickly; the way my first trainer phrased it was ‘suck your belly button into your spine’. Keep your core engaged and strong. If you find your back swaying during reps, you need to lower your weights and focus more on your posture.
If you’re too shy to use a public gym, that’s totally okay! Having your own set of dumbbells is the most ideal solution, but if that’s not an option then you can very effectively substitute common household items for weights and still get a good workout. Check out more info here: https://www.darkironfitness.com/what-can-i-use-instead-of-dumbbells/
I have a love/hate relationship with my binders, but I definitely could not live without them. Maintaining a healthy binding regime is central to caring for my mental and physical wellbeing, and that includes not binding sometimes. Self care is more than enjoyable activities and pampering; sometimes, you need to take long-term measures to ensure future happiness.
I bind for six to nine hours at a time, because I’ve figured out my limits. I take breaks from binding, and never bind while I’m at home. If I’m in pain, or I’ve pushed my body too far, then I layer up and bear the dysphoria. It’s not ideal, but I’ve experienced the alternative, and I know that hurting my ribs can cause injuries that take months to heal. I’d rather not bind for a few days than not bind for months.
Always remember that your chest is never as prominent while binding as you imagine it is! The next time you walk down the street, take note of cis men’s chests. Most of them are pretty shapely, unless the guy in question is slender or underweight. It’s easy for dysphoria to trick you into thinking your chest is bigger than it actually is.
Check out this page for info on how to bind safely, alternative ways of binding, ways of covertly obtaining a binder, and what to do if you can’t bind: https://transgenderteensurvivalguide.tumblr.com/bindingfaq
Here are a number of brands that make safe binders (the first two are the most safe, to my knowledge):
gc2b
Underworks
T-Kingdom
Peecock
Spectrum Outfitters
You should NEVER use the following binders:
LesLoveBoat
Wish
The Discriminant
Ancient Fish King
Cheap binders sold on eBay.
Not every transmasc person enjoys packing, wearing STPs, or using toys in the bedroom, which is okay! I won’t go into too much detail about my own sexual history (let’s not make this a NSFW post), but I will include a few resources here which could help you to find something that works for you! Packing is something I love, personally, because it corrects an error with my anatomy that I’ve struggled with for years. (The links are obviously slightly NSFW, as many of the prosthetics resemble irl anatomy.) I’ve had good dealings with the toolshedtoys website, and I like the packing trunks from FTM Downunder. If you click on the first link you’ll be taken to a page about a prosthetic specifically made for FTM men!

Aside from being very masculine items of clothing, overlarge flannels are also very helpful for dudes like me. As a pretty solid guy, who’s not on Testosterone yet, an undone flannel on top of a t-shirt works miracles with flattering my form and helping me to appear more masculine. Hip dysphoria can be a real bitch, but it’s quite manageable if I wear the right clothes. Paired with shorts that are a couple of sizes too big, I pass 99% of the time.
Always remember that you don’t need to be thin to be trans! Your validity is not determined by whether you pass or not, and even if you’re a larger person you can definitely pass as a man.
I don’t like bath bombs, and feminine hygiene/skincare products just remind me of the life I’ve left behind. Masculine deodorants, soaps, and shaving creams really make me feel fantastic, though, and I love scented candles. There are plenty of non-gendered candle brands that can decorate your living space with a more masculine atmosphere. Personally, I like citronella, because it repels insects and also smells relaxing. Lighting a candle and settling down with a book, and possibly a cup of herbal tea, is a fantastic way to alleviate feelings of negativity. (I’m fond of George Pelecanos’ books because they’re extremely masculine, if also a tad socially outdated.)
A really nice self care tactic is to have a little ritual that’s just for you, no matter how small or brief. For me, I take time every now and then to shave, moisturise my face, shape my eyebrows, and give my haircut a trim. Occasional moments like that make you feel refreshed, and can do wonders for your mental health! Find the things that work for you and indulge in them as often as you like.
There is absolutely nothing that I find more affirming than cutting my own hair! I bought my first set of clippers when I wasn’t passing, at the beginning of my transition, and couldn’t put up with people charging me more for ‘female’ haircuts. It doesn’t take very long to get good at cutting your own hair, either! There are heaps of Youtube tutorials on how to do your own ‘back and sides’ cuts, and buzzcuts are super easy too. It’s a really empowering thing, to be able to control your appearance as you see fit.
If you can’t cut your own hair, and are instead going to see a hairdresser, I would advise bringing along photos of the haircut you want so that you don’t end up with a Beiber bob. A hairdresser is there to give you the service/outcome you desire, not feminise your haircut as they see fit… Better than a hairdresser, honestly, would be a barber. They’re more likely to give you a ‘man’s’ haircut and not charge you more if you don’t pass.
If you still live with your parents and aren’t allowed to have short hair (or you’re not ready to cut your hair off), tie it up and wear beanies! It’ll work wonders for convincing people that you have short hair.
All this being said, you do not have to cut your hair to be a valid trans dude! Personally, I hated my long hair, and having a short haircut affords me a huge amount of gender euphoria. But you might feel differently, which is 100% okay. Take time to figure out what kind of presentation works for you!
In order to bolster your confidence, it’s so important to seek out real representation, and by that I mean representation that actually reflects our diverse community. The picture I’ve used above is from Rakeem Cunningham’s website, and is an example of inclusive and body positive art that deviates from the thin/caucasian/classically attractive stereotype that dominates LGBT+ representation in mainstream media. I love his portraits, and I adore the way he embraces the uniques of his models. Along with his portfolio, here’s a bunch of LGBT-focussed sites for you to browse:

I’ve written a more in-depth post about trans movies and television (https://vitative.tumblr.com/post/178880199710/vitative-vitative-lgbt-films-and-television), but here’s a short list of characters that I connect with:
Mikhäel from Tomboy (2011).
Lukas Leonhard from Romeos (2011).
Ray from 3 Generations (2015).
Brandon Teena from Boys Don’t Cry (1999).
Tony Sawicki from Orphan Black (in s02e08).
Taylor Mason from Billions (in s2 and onward).
Drew from Dead Of Summer (2016).
Not all of these movies/shows have a happy ending (I would be particularly cautious of Boys Don’t Cry in that respect), but I really love seeing characters that I identify with onscreen, because they help me to feel valid in my gender identity, and reassure me that being trans is okay… I would advise either reading my review post or looking up warnings for each film/show, though, before you dive in unprepared.
3 Generations, while definitely not a perfect movie, is probably the only coming-of-age trans movie I can think of, and it’s far less distressing than many other trans-centric plotlines. I really do love to watch it! It makes me feel less alone. Check out these posts for more info on the film:
