Concept art for Karkat’s design, first sketches, etc etc. Did you know that a lot of deep sea creatures are red because red light doesn’t penetrate that deep? Thus, to other creatures down there, they appear totally black because there’s no red light to reflect. I took inspiration from Vampire Squids, jellyfish, eels, and manta rays.

Karkat’s diet consists of jellyfish and occasionally animal fats from whale carcasses that sink down within his region. Most everything else is too solid for his body to digest.

Another fact- the vast majority of deep ocean fish lack swim bladders, and rely on their superb bouyancy to swim freely. The pressure is so strong that they won’t float to the surface.

The merfolk in this story communicate with sonar, much like dolphins. The horns on their heads help pick up on vibrations within the water.

Lots of deep sea creatures can be brought to the surface, if done carefully. Changes in pressure usually aren’t what kills them- the big change in temperature is.
