I am supposed to be thinking about a MILLION OTHER THINGS right now and/or sleeping, but instead, here is where my brain is at:

It’s not the most common thing in the world, but girls can sometimes keep growing all the way until the age of 16. So what if Mirabel has one TINY growth spurt left in her and she ends up at basically her mom’s height, and most importantly, a littleeeee bit taller than Bruno? I’m just making myself laugh thinking about him feeling comically betrayed by her for sneaking past him. And by then, Camilo’s gotten taller too (he probably artificially adds on a few more inches around Bruno just to emphasize it, lol) and Bruno is just in a SEA of sobrinos who he has to look up at. He’s already spent his whole life dealing with two taller sisters who won’t let him hear the end of it and now this!? HAS HE NOT SUFFERED ENOUGH!? THE INJUSTICE OF IT ALL

Smashcut to 12 years later, or maybe Bruno inadvertently sees it in a vision: This boy turns out to be a solid 6′3″ in the future. He is gloriously tall. Get wrecked, Bruno. YOU ARE EVERYONE’S TINY TIO FOREVER

I understand the need to try and make sense of Mirabel not getting a gift among the Encanto fanbase. Encanto does a fantastic job at making you yearn like she does to get her Gift, to fit in, to make her suffering mean something... but headcanoning that she has a secret gift or "less obvious" gift, but a gift nonetheless, is not the way to go.

I think this take ultimately misunderstands one of the main messages of the film.

No, Mirabel has no gift. She is not more special or secretly the most powerful. The Encanto's magic coming back at the end was not because of a Power or something that Mirabel had - how could she still have a power if the magic was gone? Her family acknowledging Mirabel's heart and love for her family, and how hard she tries for them, symbolically with the door knob being locked into place, was the final piece needed to reignite the magic.

So no, Mirabel has no gift at all. She never did, and never will. Sure, you can say she has a gift for talking to her family and fixing the issue, but she's still ultimately normal.

That is the point.

Mirabel is just as important to the miracle as all her other family members. Just as much a part of the family as everyone else. Alma needed to see this; her ostracising, being too tough on, and ignoring Mirabel is deliberately, explicitly, what caused the magic to fall; her flawed perception of the miracle due to her severe trauma.

When Mirabel asks to be blessed, does the magic give her a gift? No. Instead, it brings the flaws in the foundation to a head by making casita fall apart. No longer can Alma pretend everything is okay - she and the family are FORCED to look at their struggling inner workings. That is what needed to happen to keep the magic. Not Mirabel getting a gift, but for Alma to see that A) She doesn't HAVE to constantly try to EARN the miracle given to her by putting her family to work and ultimately, B), understand that Mirabel just existing, living and breathing, in a world where Alma was supposed to die that night along with her babies, is a testament to how fortunate the miracle really is to this woman who had suffered so much.

Again: Mirabel is perfect just as she is. She is normal, she exists. And that is wondrous. That is beautiful. And by the end of the movie, Alma, with the help of her family and her love for them, does better, and they all reconcile, and she can finally see Mirabel for who she is and why it is nothing short of a miracle to have such a sweet, compassionate, loving nieta in her life.

The message that Mirabel is just as valid and worthy of love and support from her family despite not having a gift is completely thrown out the window when you try to theorize that she has some kind of secret or hidden, but ultimately magical, gift. No. This best girl is amazing, just. the way. she is. ♡

guys i had a stupid but funny thought again

you know how casita can make stairs into a slide?

remember all though stairs in bruno’s room?

all i can imagine is when casita still had access to bruno’s room, bruno is just casually walking down the stairs like he does everyday, minding his own business but as soon as he gets down the first couple of steps, casita immediantly turns his stairs into a slide, scaring the ever living hell out of bruno, him gaining more and more speed, hitting a ramp at the bottom of the stair slide, flying in the air and landing head first into a heap of sand

Bruno and Alma both agree neither of them have anything in common, and don’t look alike at all

They both laugh and joke about how maybe the midwife gave her the wrong son because neither of them see anything that resembles one another in their features or personality.

They’re both wrong.

BRUNO WASHED HIS FUCKING HAIR!

Even on a first viewing I thought something looked off about his character model in the final scene but couldn’t quiet figure out why. Then I saw someone post a compellation of screenshots and seeing them side by side it fucking clicked. He washed his greasy ass fucking hair. In the final scene it’s fluffier and shiner and it doesn’t hang in his face as much, goes from down to his shoulders to barely past his jawline. He washed his hair and it poofed up like an adorable poodle.

What sends me reeling, is the animators fucking did this. They adjusted his fucking character model for this one fucking scene. So that he would look cleaner and more well kept, to visually imply he’s started taking better care of himself.

This fucking movie. This fucking man. I so fucking stupid. I’m fucking dying, I’m so dumb.

I probably could have just answered your question without making a whole comic that's like, twice the length of the original. The early strip with Dolores was going to be longer but I cut out the scenes with her parents cause I just wanted to get the idea out quickly and didn't expect it to take off like it did. But considering the popularity, I plan to go back in and add in the deleted scenes. At that point, I'll probably post the whole short story in one long compiled post. But yes Dolores heard all of this.

“It’s not my fault, Isa! I don’t have the equipment! Take it up with your mamá!” he whined, once he’d untangled her fingers from the already sparse little thatch of hair (sparser now) and had convinced her to grasp one thumb in each dastardly little glue trap of a hand instead.

Here’s a gift for @ambidextrous-space-samurai of my favorite moment from their fic Benediction // Malediction, which might be one of the most beautiful and heartwarming things I’ve ever read. It’s about Bruno becoming an uncle and holding Isabela on the day she’s born - so many good familial feels.

The image of Bruno making little maracas with infant Isabela’s hands just wouldn’t leave me - I also kept picturing the super plush bed described in Julieta’s room.
