Black Tabby Games has a death grip on my entire brain rn so here's STP
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I got a lot of inspiration from the designs of @0xeyedaisy , @roomofstillness , and @unfriendly-aesop ) ((and of course the concept art of the illustrious @abby-howard which is GORGEOUS))
And here's SH
(primarily my first and main cousin, Lake)

Heavily inspired by @snuffysbox whose SH drawings actually convinced me to pick up the game in the first place!

A test run >:)
I really really really like this moment in the books, so I tried my hand at adapting it. I'm not actually particularly happy with it, but I like the idea and that's what a test run is for! It's definitely helped me in learning what not to do lol

The girl herself!!!!
You know the drill by now, design notes under the cut
I don't... actually have a ton to say about the outfit, most of it was just simplifying. I did try to make sure she contrasted with Raven as much as possible without being too cartoonish. Raven has a lot of long sharp shapes, so Apple has short round shapes. I actually drew from the books for both of their physiques; Raven is very lanky and thin while Apple has broad hips and a curved figure. Apple is shorter, but the heels put them at eye level.
Fun smaller details-
I tried to put in some apple seed shapes wherever it fit, mainly in her earrings and jacket sleeves.
I wanted to make sure her jaw was very defined 1. Because it just makes for a more distinct face shape and it felt fitting and 2. Because her cheekbone genes are absolutely ridiculous and I wanted it to look like she could believably grow into her mom's facial features as she aged
She probably has the heaviest makeup of any character I've designed so far. I basically just took the design from the show for this- heavy dark eyelashes, the pinkest blush, and bright red lips. I actually struggle a lot with drawing lipstick in particular, but it feels so right for her character to always be wearing that famous "red as blood" color.
I know that Gala is missing, but frankly I didn't want to draw her lmao. I also don't know how necessary she is, as much as I like her, because Apple is already attended by like a million woodland critters anyways
I have so many thoughts on her character but honestly it's not particularly different from her existing portrayals, so I'm not going to go into it here because I don't have anything new to say that wouldn't apply before.

I've been unhappy with my original design for a while now (I think it's one of my worse EAH drawings too, design aside) so I gave her a good sprucing up. I think this does a better job conveying the personality I was going for. New design notes under the cut!
I finished the first design while in a bit of a rut. I really wanted to move on, but Bunny was the last of the wonderlandians and I knew if I moved on I wouldn't come back to finish her. I was determined to make something, even if it turned out meh. And it turned out very meh. Finding myself in a very similar state with my third draft of Apple (seriously that girl is KILLING me), I decided to take a moment to try something that didn't feel so stale. Some notes on the changes I made:
I realized that I had made my own job WAY harder by forgetting my own rules. Wonderlandians follow certain guidelines in order to make them feel like a unique group- namely Victorian-esque fashion. I try to stick to 1860s English fashion generally. There are deviations, like Maddie and Lizzie, but those serve story purposes. Bunny has no reason to deviate. Add that together with the famous description of the white rabbit in a waistcoat and suddenly the whole thing clicked a lot better.
Moving the bell-adorned capelet to a bell-adorned cape also really helped. I love a capelet silhouette, but I wasn't utilizing it well, and this feels a lot less overstuffed while still providing that herald/jester image I liked so much
And some general notes on her! All the notes on her character from the first post still apply btw
You wouldn't usually know it because of the way her legs are bent (plus she spends as much time as a regular rabbit as she does a rabbit girl) but she's the tallest of the wonderlandians. Don't be mistaken though, the height is 90% legs.
Her dress usually falls to just above where a human ankle would be. She wears shorts under her dress, but never wears shoes.
Out of all the wonderlandians she's probably the most actually mature. As in, the most likely to act like a rational adult in any given situation. Next up is Lizzie, but her pride and tendency towards mimicking her mother's rash temper make her a tad less reliable. Bunny is very much the mom friend
Best way I can put it- if they all go to jail, Bunny is the one that's gonna talk them out.

I have once again just made a new character entirely
Design notes under the cut
Alright so I broke some of my own rules but in my defense this was hard because of the choices I had made of my own free will
So, I wanted to have some bunny traits, and I wanted them to be really obvious. I took some inspiration from the rabbitfolk/harengon in 5e dnd, and I really wanted her to be able to leap like a rabbit while in her humanoid form, so I just said fuck it and gave her full rabbit legs. Where does the human end and the rabbit begin? Hell if I know, I just thought this looked cool. Gave her pale eyes, buck teeth, big ol' floppy ears, all the prime bunny traits.
Outfit wise, I had to get creative. Because of the weird rabbit anatomy I had to make sure that her outfit was very loose, so she's the least Victorian of the wonderlandians. She's got a cowl and a short cape, which I wanted to emulate the silhouette of some kind of royal messenger. This is a bit mean, but I also always was kinda under the impression that the White Rabbit was kind of there to be cowardly under the Queen of Hearts, and that she found it funny. The outfit still needed a complicating factor, so I put an extra layer on the cowl with some bells attached like a jesters outfit. I thought it would also be cute if she made jingle jangle sounds whenever she was running around, so you always knew where she was headed to next. If Maddie gets shoes that go *HONK* then Bunny gets bells that go *jingle jangle jingle jangle*
The goggles and gloves add some value contrast, but they're also practical! Since Alistair is so impulsively curious (both the love and bane of her existence) she's always ready for an impromptu chemical experiment. Eye protection is important, and you really don't want your hands in caustic materials! She loves his curiosity and excitement, but it can be stressful trying to make sure he doesn't die while blinded by the promise of science
They still have a semi-romantic relationship going on, but instead of the obnoxious "oh but they could NEVER like someone like me!" It's more just... Unaddressed? They've been so close for so long that everybody just assumes they're together, but they've never actually put any kind of label on it or talked about it with eachother. It's just kind of irrelevant to their dynamic
I am considering an alternative to that relationship because somehow simultaneously I think Bunny admires and loves Alistairs brilliant curiosity and that their relationship has "he once asked me what the Spanish word for tortilla was and now I dream of kissing him in the moonlight" vibes
She, like most wonderland kids, doesn't really care about or consider the destiny conflict, but she doesn't have more friends on either side, so she's not aligned with either

I think my most incredibly lukewarm Starkid take is that the Very Potter Musicals have aged like milk and I just don't really like them as a whole, HOWEVER-
I have and will be thinking about
"Now TWO people are mad at meeeeeeeeeeeee"

LISTEN we all love Figayda but I don't know how to explain how much the Ayda/Adaine friendship means to me. They talked 1 time about 1 common interest and now they're BONDED for LIFE!! They are BLOOD BROTHERS!!! And holy SHIT that is so real and accurate to my experience of being a neurodivergent queer teenager. They could talk about spellcraft for hours with utter glee. They could sit in total silence for hours with no sense of tension. They created spells for each other. Not just fun spells they thought the other would like, deeply personal and practical spells that they knew would find good use. "I know you sometimes have issues interpreting what people actually mean" "I have noticed you often want to punch things" and so here is a tool that I hope will make your life a little easier. I'm very normal about them I promise you can trust me

As a therapist who mostly works with traumatized teens, I find discourse about the Bad Kids weirdly triggering. Like, you think the 16 year old lesbian who escaped from a fundamentalist cult a year and a half ago should be nicer? Her current relationship with her god and religion should be unproblematic and she should be an ideal cleric? Jail for one thousand years.

I love that Gwen is the only one of the Spider-Gang who's a bonafide jock. Miles is a big-time nerd who has to try to fail advanced science classes, Peter B. designed and engineered his own web slingers, Peni pilots a hyper-sophisticated mech, Pavitr casually glides through school but works hard anyways because he likes it, Porker is a dedicated journalist, and Hobie reverse engineered the watches and created his own personal inter-dimensional transportation.
Gwen is smart, but she's not a science nerd or an engineer, and she's a very dedicated athlete (ballet is HARDCORE) so I rest my case on her being a jock
Also I'm wrong, Spider-Noir is a jock too (I do consider recreationally punching nazis a sport)

Rewatching Yellow Jacket, I can't help but really appreciate how the main trio are written, especially in regards to money. I feel like the easy way to go would be to have a story about greed, forgetting where you came from, ego, blah blah blah. That's the cliche cake you get from the ingredients set up in the first act. But I really, really love that they didn't go that way. Hannah doesn't want money for luxury. She won't say no to it, but her primary motivation is entirely about making Lex happy. There's no bullshit about how money can't buy happiness, because it kind of can. Not happiness directly, but it can sure as fuck buy security, stability, and resources. Ethan has never seen anything close to 100k in his life. And then what they do with a quarter of it is, objectively, irresponsible. Because they're still kids. What would be treated as frivolous in a less compassionate story is vital to these characters. They buy games and toys and ice cream, fill the house with arcade cabinets and a bounce house. Ethan gets so excited that he forgets to get a bed for himself and Lex, but he gets Hannah an extravagant water bed because he loves the kid with all his heart.
Lex has been working shitty minimum wage jobs since she was 16. She had to drop out of high school because she literally couldn't afford to not work for those 8 hours a day. She takes all the hours she can get, she sells whatever she can get her hands on, she takes the consequences onto herself, she takes the snide remarks, she takes the verbal abuse, she takes all of it because she refuses to let Hannah suffer the way Pam did. The hyper-awareness of money bleeds over to Hannah too, no matter how much Lex tries to protect her from it. She knows that a child should never have to worry about bills and medical expenses and if food is gonna be on the table tomorrow, and she doesn't want Hannah to feel the same anxieties that she does. But still, this kid, on her birthday, sees a tablet she could win, and her first thought is that she could sell it. Because fun is a luxury, and she knows it.
So Ethan blowing 25k on games and pizza and candy- it's not silly to them. It's not frivolous. He's giving them both, but especially Lex, the childhood that was taken from them. That was taken by late stage capitalism, and poverty, and a school system that let them slip through the cracks, and an abusive, negligent parent. It's not the most responsible thing in the world, but it's not about the games or the junk food. It's about the ability to eat the junk food and have time to play the games. It's about Lex not having to feel guilty for spending the day with her sister when she could be working. It's about being able to stay up late for Hannah's 15th birthday, because she doesn't have to take a shift the next day. It's about having the time and energy to study and pass the test without entirely burning herself out and hurting the people around her. It's about these three people finally, finally having the resources to feel real, safe, full joy in their lives, and more.
Thank you for joining me on this week's episode of Why This Scene Of Two Twenty-Somethings Sleeping In A Bounce House Made Me Cry, and now back to Dan with the weather-

@zend-pixie I want to extrapolate from my original statement because I HAVE thought about this lmao
In my mind there are exactly two Matteson characters that are Some Fucking Guy, and everyone else is their own brand of freak.
Some Guy number 1- Paul Matthews. Literally the guy.
Some Guy number 2- Daniel, AKA Stopwatch. Ok I know he can stop time but his personality is so normal. This is just how young teen boys are from top to bottom, including Oddly Specific Hobby and Oversharing At Random Times.
Every other character has their own unique flavor of What The Fuck, so they each have their own box within the overall WTF box.
Richie- Anime Kid WTF
Gary Goldstein- Workaholic Weirdo WTF
Boy Jerry- Really Should Not Work With Kids WTF
Ect.
I also do include Trevor from the Barbecue Monologues rehearsal because being a theatre kid disqualifies you from being a normal human
