PERSONA 5 : THE PHANTOM X BETA - PART 7

After school, Wonder takes the train to Shibuya where he meets up with Ruferu.

RUFERU : You finally got here. I’ve been waiting forever….

RUFERU : You bag’s always empty, that makes it nice and cozy to hide inside.

RUFERU : You gotta pretend like nothing is about to happen. If the target catches on that you're here, you’ll only put ‘em on high alert.

WONDER : What are you talking about…?

RUFERU : I’ll explain as soon as we’re alone. For now, eyes up.

Wonder obeys without a word, watching on as an older Japanese businessman barges past a young girl before shoving another one out of the way. The second cowers from the man until he raises a fist, prompting her to flee. 

RUFERU : That guy’s our target. His name is Takeyuki Kiuchi.

RUFERU : As far as public perception goes, he’s just your everyday businessmen working in Tokyo.

WONDER : What is he doing?

RUFERU : He’s what I like to call a “hit and runner”.

RUFERU : He intentionally uses his body to bully around women who are unlikely to resist, all to satisfy some sick fantasy of control.

RUFERU : So you see, he’s actually quite an immoral human being.

WONDER : A cunning fellow…

RUFERU : I agree.

RUFERU : Though his actions are manifesting in reality, the underlying cause lies in the other world.

RUFERU : You understand what I’m saying, right?

WONDER : The answer can be found in Kiuchi’s shadow, huh?

RUFERU : That’s right. However, I’ve been unable to track down his shadow, so it’s all just speculation at this point.

RUFERU : On the surface, his actions appear innocent enough.

RUFERU : So long as his behaviour can be passed off as an accident, the police will continue to look the other way. 

RUFERU : Meanwhile, his victims quickly give up on pressing charges because as far as they’re concerned, nothing can be done. But it’s slowly draining on their hopes and dreams… Their positive desires…

RUFERU : Though, a more accurate way to say it, could be that Kiuchi is stealing the positive desires of others through his maliciously selfish actions.

WONDER : Then let’s go put an end to this right now.

RUFERU : There’s nothing we can do when his Shadow is out of control in the Metaverse.

RUFERU : He won’t even hear you out.

RUFERU : It’s ironic, but as long he perceives these hit and run assaults as justified in his own mind then he won’t stop.

RUFERU : That’s why we need him to overwrite his own perception.

As Ruferu explains the situation to Wonder, another teen girl arrives from the train terminal. 

RUFERU : And that’s not the worst part…

Takeyuki Kiuchi, who has been scanning the station carefully, soon catches sight of the girl.

WONDER : He’s targeting someone else!

Sure enough, the man crashes his body into the young girl who stumbles forward, losing balance, only to be caught by Wonder.

Seeing this, the man immediately takes flight, leaving the confused girl to right herself and look around for her attacker.

WOMAN LOOKING AT HER PHONE : What the-- Can’t he just…

She stops what she’s saying and brushes herself down before leaving the train station. As Wonder watches her leave, Ruferu speaks proudly.

RUFERU : To stop other people from acting on their selfish desires with righteous indignation. That. Is what it means to be “Awakened”...

RUFERU : Ah, dammit, looks like we caught Kiuchi’s attention, we should get out of here.

As Ruferu says this, Wonder seems to get a vision of the future. In the vision, Kiuchi spots a woman pushing along a stroller, and immediately slams himself into her.

The woman screams in panic and pain before losing her balance and falling down a flight of stairs, stroller in tow...

WOMAN : Ah!

MAN : Are you okay!?

PANICKED WOMAN : Her baby! Where’s her baby?!

OTHER MAN : I’m afraid it’s too late…

The vision ends without providing any clear answers. 

WONDER : I-I think I just saw something…

RUFERU : What do you mean?

RUFERU : You look like you’ve seen a ghost… Maybe you haven’t fully recovered from your Awakening just yet…?

RUFERU : In any case, we need to leave. Kiuchi’s still watching us.

RUFERU : We should head to the plaza out front. You know where we first came out of the Metaverse together?

Exiting out the terminal, Motoha spots Wonder.

MOTOHA ARAI : Wonder…? What’s he doing in Shibuya…?

MOTOHA ARAI : Did he say something to that guy…?

MOTOHA ARAI : W-Wait… That’s…

Motoha’s train of thought is cut off when Tomoke arrives.

TOMOKE NOGE : Sorry! I got delayed on my way out of the station… My monthly pass doesn’t seem to wanna work…

TOMOKE NOGE : What’s wrong?

MOTOHA ARAI : Nothing. We still on to go to the underground mall here at the station?

Meanwhile, outside the station…

RUFERU : We should be clear now.

RUFERU : I know you’ve got a lot of questions for me, but you at least understand what I’m saying, right? It’s nigh-on impossible to stop Kiuchi in this reality.

RUFERU : It’s like I said earlier, even the police find it difficult to take action against him.

RUFERU :  Because even members of the police force are having their desires stolen…

RUFERU : In this world, it is basic human nature for people to come together in unison to find solutions to such problems.

RUFERU : However, even this instinctually collective desire of humanity has been exhausted…

WONDER : So what are we supposed to do about it…?

RUFERU : There’s only one thing to do…

RUFERU : We have to go to the Metaverse and steal something from Takeyuki Kiuchi.

TAKEO KOJIMA : Even as a police officer, I never expected a real murder to happen…

TAKEO KOJIMA : Based on the condition of her body, there's no doubt she was killed with a knife.

TAKEO KOJIMA : Dammit… Things just keep getting more complicated…

Ritsu Kamiki, 21 years old:

A university student from Tokyo. She’s a cunning girl who doesn't trust easily, always speaks her mind and has a terrible attitude. Despite being 21, she still looks like a grade schooler.

RITSU KAMIKI : Did that wolf guy really go and kill someone...? Isn't that insane?

RITSU KAMIKI : And that much blood is just ridiculous...

RITSU KAMIKI : Ugh, it's so gross…

Maki Takayama, 25 years old:

A reporter for a major weekly magazine. Specializes in gossip articles and always carries a camera and voice recorder. Friendly and approachable, likely popular among older men.

MAKI TAKAYAMA : So, the wolf among us actually murdered someone…

ME : Yeah, it certainly seems that way.

MAKI TAKAYAMA : Yeah, well, just sitting around watching everyone won't help us figure out who the wolf is…

Satoru Yonemori, 33 years old:

A seemingly unlucky psychiatrist. His hairstyle is influenced by Jack Black, an actor he admires. Judging on appearance alone, he seems dissatisfied with his life and somewhat bitter.

SATORU YONEMORI : The victim likely died of shock caused by excessive bleeding.

ME : Indeed, there's a disturbing amount of blood...

SATORU YONEMORI : The wolf appears to have stabbed her through the heart with a knife."

SATORU YONEMORI : In all honesty, she didn't stand a chance of surviving...

ME : You're right…

Leaving the others, he finds a room containing the belongings of Ritsu Kamiki and Maki Takayama.

Ritsu owns a backpack shaped adorably like a cat.

And Maki seems to always keep a spare camera on hand.

Takuya Tsuchiya, 28 years old:

He’s a stage actor who has recently hit the big time, but before that had actually been commercially unsuccessful. He has a somewhat languid demeanor, but is straightforward when it comes to expressing his opinions. Since he seems to have a quick temper, it's better not to provoke him.

TAKUYA TSUCHIYA : Seriously... I never thought a real murder would happen...

TAKUYA TSUCHIYA : I’m not going anywhere near that body…

ME : Y-yeah... 

ME : (I wouldn't want to examine a dead body either if I could help it...)

ME : Oh, these are Takuya’s things. Better leave them alone, or he’ll blow a gasket.

ME : So these must be Satoru’s. That bag looks exactly like something a doctor would have.

Iida Rintarou, 18 years old.

Honestly, I have no idea what he's thinking. He's known for his eccentric fashion sense and slanted speech. He often ends his sentences with a musical flair. He may seem carefree on the surface, but he comes across quite sharp deep down.

IIDA RINTAROU : Phew! I feel so refreshed after taking a shower.♪

IIDA RINTAROU : Have you taken one too?

ME : No, I'll pass...

ME : (This guy doesn't seem to be too shaken up, even though there's been a murder.)

ME : (There's something suspicious about him...)

SATORU YONEMORI : I was thinking this knife could have been used as a weapon...

KOU NIIMURA : But this knife... it's not even clean, let alone bloody.

SATORU YONEMORI : Yeah, about that...

SATORU YONEMORI : I actually asked Misaki-san to cook for me last night because I got a bit hungry.

SATORU YONEMORI : She used this knife and I forgot to wash it...

OSAMU NAGAI : So, does that mean the knife has been left as it was after cooking last night?

KOU NIIMURA : In that case, it's unlikely it was used as a weapon.

SATORU YONEMORI : So it would seem...

ME : (They’re right, of course, but if that's the case, it seems it really wasn't used as a weapon. I guess I'll have to keep searching…)

EMMA : Coming right up!

YAMANE : ...!! Ah, the Violet Fizz cocktail, I've heard of that before. It's said that after giving this cocktail to a lover, the man disappears never to be heard from again. Being by Elma's side brings forth so many tragic emotions! 

ELMA : Yama-chan, are you writing something again?

EMMA : As always, he refuses to show us what he's writing, though.

EMMA : Another Violet Fizz, please. 

ELMA : I'll be right back with that drink! 

EMMA : (Elma. Searle, and I spent the afternoon working at the amusement park, and now we are spending our evening bartending at the restaurant nearby.)

EMMA : (It's insanely busy, but the hourly wage is good. And the tips are nice.)

SEARLE : The fresh tomato salad is ready! 

EMMA : Thank you, Searle! When Elma gets back with the drink, I'll have him bring it over. 

STELLA : Next prepare the pasta with chopped vegetables, Searle. Remember to serve it with the salad next time. Serving each dish separately isn't optimal for the restaurant.

SEARLE : Got it, got it!

As Searle cheerfully responded, I noticed a group of new customers entering the restaurant. 

ELMA : Welcome! Oh hey, it's you, Daste! 

DASTE : The hell!? You guys are everywhere!

SCAR : It's our friends! We run into them a lot! 

ELMA : Well, that's probably 'cause it's not a very big island. Anyway, let me guide you to the bar! 

DASTE : Just give me some random drink, I don't care.

EMMA : How about some Lager? It's something you can only get at this restaurant. 

DASTE : Yeah, whatever.

While I prepared the chilled beer, Daste stood awkwardly. Glancing around the restaurant.

FEMALE CUSTOMER : Hey, bartender! Any recommended cocktails?

ELMA : We've got a limited time cocktail that's only served here! It looks suuuper cute! 

MALE CUSTOMER : Bro, bring me something good! 

ELMA : Alrighty~! I'll be right back! 

EMMA : (As expected of Elma, he's popular with both the men and women.) 

DASTE : He really stands out, huh?

EMMA : Elma? Yeah, he has a vibrant personality that makes him the center of attention. His smile is so bright it makes everyone else━

MALE VOICE : Hey, don't fuckin' touch me!

Startled by the noise, we all glanced in the direction of the loud voices. It appeared to be a couple arguing nearby. A rugged-looking man was forcefully pushing away a small woman who was clinging to his arm. 

EMMA : (That tattoo on the man's right arm...)

YAMANE : The scent of tragic love!!

SCAR : Is this what they call a lovers' spat~?

EMMA : I'll go check it out.

DASTE : Seriously? Just leave 'em to it.

Leaving the indifferent Daste behind, I headed towards the arguing couple. 

FEMALE VOICE : I told you I won't put up with this anymore!! How could you do this again!?

MALE VOICE : Shut the fuck up! It's none of your business! Get your filthy hands off of me!

FEMALE VOICE : Ahhhh!!

EMMA : This isn't good!!

Just as the woman was about to fall into the nearby pool, I instinctively grabbed for her arm, but the momentum caused me to lose my balance too and-

ELMA : Careful now! 

Elma had rushed across the restaurant and caught me before I fell into the pool. 

EMMA : Thanks, Elma. 

ELMA : No prob!

MALE VOICE : Hey! Who the hell are you!?

ELMA : Sir, I think you need to cool off a bit.

MALE VOICE : Don't stick your nose into this or I'll knock you the fuck out!

ELMA : !!

The enraged man pulled back his arm and swung his fist toward Elma's face━

MALE VOICE : What!? You bastard!!!

DASTE : Oops~ My foot slipped.

ELMA : Daste!!

DASTE : You should watch out when I kick a guy next time! You almost got kicked too, damn it!

EMMA : We need medical assistance!!

ELMA : Uh, Daste... You went a little overboard, don'tcha think?

DASTE : What do ya mean?

FEMALE VOICE : Thank you so much for stopping him! He was about to do something really bad, I just know it!

DASTE : Hah. Don't gotta thank me for putting that asshole in his place. Instead of crying like a bitch, you should learn how to throw a punch.

FEMALE VOICE : ...I...Understand...

ELMA : I wonder~ Is Daste the type of guy who looks all tough on the outside, but is secretly a big softie inside~? In that case, you're my friend Daste! Let's toast to tonight! 

DASTE : The hell're you talkin' about? Ugh. I guess a drink wouldn't hurt...

As the medical staff promptly arrived to assess the man's injuries, I breathed a sigh of relief.

The gentle sunlight shines down upon the large clock tower at the center of Calavina. A festival symbolizing new beginnings is being held, and the city is bustling with invited guests.

(I'm glad everything is going smoothly) 

I thought to myself, letting out a breath of relief after all the twists and turns we've faced to reach this moment. 

(Huh?)

Suddenly, I spot Sky, watching a crowd of tourists. As I see him with that trademark cigarette dangling from his lips, my lips twist into a subconscious smile...

SKY : ......

There's something lonely about the way he's standing outside of the crowd, watching.

EMMA : Hey, Sky.

SKY : Hey. Didn't expect to see you again so soon, Emma.

As I approached him, he spoke as casually as always. 

SKY : Figured you'd be all busy with the festival prep, so I was planning to just look for you after things settled down a bit.

EMMA : Yeah, I just finished greeting everyone. Oh, by the way, where's Makoto?

As I mention Makoto, who used to be a prince of Daten like Sky and is now being guarded by him, Sky replies,

SKY : Ah, Makoto. I told him he should come with me to thank you for everything, but he declined, saying it's "pointless."  Then he disappeared off somewhere. Geez, that guy's a real pain...

EMMA : I see...

(Is that why he looked so lonely? Does he miss Makoto?)

SKY : He seemed like he wanted to be alone, so I'll let him do as he pleases for now.

Sky's smile transitioned from wry to bright as he faced me directly.

SKY : We're not royals anymore, so the only reason we were invited today is 'cause you invited us. 

(Sky...)

Originally part of Daten's royal family, Sky and Makoto were ousted due to the betrayal of the current president, who used to be close to the king. With the monarchy abolished, they are now being targeted by the president...

ELMA : The old man from the town's butcher shop gave it to us for free. All I said was I'm gonna be having a barbecue and he was like, "take it."

SEARLE : Ooooh~! I want some of that meat too!

URBANO : Hey, get your paws off it! That meat was for Emma! It's what I call, "Urbano's Ultra Special Steak!" 

EMMA : How is it ultra special...?

SHEILA : It's ultra special because he made it for you, Emma. He said that he wanted to express his gratitude toward you. It is the season of love, is it not?

ELMA : Yup! This barbecue is also to express our gratitude to the people who joined Passionate Ocean! 

SHEILA : I'm good at making seafood dishes, but today I'll leave the steak to Urbano.

Warm light envelopes me, holding me in place as a soothing melody gently fills the air…

Nostalgia grips me, welling up from within. I gaze up at the towering tree, in a desperate attempt to identify the source....

But the lush green trees around me beginning to wither and die, leaving me stunned in a cascade of dead leaves.

Through the gap in the trees, a black mist crawls forth, accompanied by the lamenting calls of a cacophony of voices I fail to tell apart...

??? : Why do humans dream…?

EMMA : (Wh-Who is this… Who’s there...?)

Whose emotion is this pitch black despair...

Human dreams, hopes shattered, we are painted black...

It’s so sad. It hurts. God it hurts so much…

EMMA : (W-Wait this is-- It’s the Black Fairy...?)

Humans are nothing but weak, fragile, transient beings.

I tentatively reach out once again for Crow's arm, and he again in turn extends it back out to me. This time… I feel warmth…

Without another word, he dashed off and returned with cleaning supplies in hand. The servants followed suit, armed with their own cleaning tools, and began tidying up.

RUFERU : I'm here! As agreed, it is time I answer your questions. About that place you saw yesterday, that is what we call the Metaverse and those monsters are what we call Shadows. What I have to say is tough to understand. You ready?

Ruferu and Wonder are now seated on the bench talking.

RUFERU : It's how people perceive the real world. Maybe that's easier to understand? The Metaverse is a dark, twisted version of our own. This means that the current humans living in Tokyo cannot perceive any hope from the world.

RUFERU : In the other world, there are entities called Shadows. There are two types of these. The first type was those enemies that attacked us without warning. Those guys aren't human. They're more like monsters triggered by desires.

RUFERU : The second type is different...Those shadows are a second side to a human in the real world. Symbols of their dark and twisted hearts. It's the embodiment of desires hidden in a human's heart. In other words, "another self." 

WONDER : Could it be...

RUFERU : You should already understand. After all, you already awakened your Shadow as a Persona. 

RUFERU : But not everyone has the same ability you have. They can't all control their inner selves. If for some reason desires become twisted, their Shadow will lose control...Even in the real world, they will harm others without hesitation.

RUFERU : In conclusion, when someone's Shadow loses control it is considered the mastermind who exploits desires in the other world. At least that's my speculation. 

WONDER : Is that really what's happening...?

RUFERU : Indeed. It may be difficult to wrap your head around, but it's the truth. What's even worse is that when a human's Shadow loses control, the monstrous Shadows are also effected. They will continue to drain the desires from the real world until there are none left. 

WONDER : (.........)

RUFERU : I don't know everything yet. That's why we need to explore and understand that other world in detail. Although it's a bit soon, let's change the topic to work. 

WONDER : Work?

I glanced in the direction Rintarou was pointing and spotted a fenced off area across the edge of the rooftop. 

YUKINARI SHIMOTSUKI : We've gotta climb this fence?

RINTAROU IIDA : Good job, you figured it out~♪ There should be an emergency staircase on the other side. We can sprint down and make our escape! Easy as pie~♪

YUKINARI SHIMOTSUKI : Seriously!? But we're on the rooftop, it's gonna be really high up isn't it? 

YUKINARI SHIMOTSUKI : (Oh no, I'm so scared my legs are beginning to tremble...)

In the distance I could hear loud footsteps climbing the stairs to the rooftop. He was right, the security guards were hot on our trail.

RINTAROU IIDA : That's it, Yukinari! You're almost there!

SPARROW : Wow...The moon is so big and round...I-It's beautiful...
