Tip for people who want to get into surfing:
Surfers are MEAN. They get COMPETITIVE over waves. If you’re bad at communicating or confrontation, find somewhere that’s not crowded. All that ‘chill hippy aloha’ stuff that media paints surfers as is a fucking lie. People fight for waves, there’s etiquette you have to follow, you’ll absolutely get called a kook and told to go home if you make one single mistake. Best to stick with friends if you have any, or find a more secluded spot to practice before you go anywhere near a lineup.
Also short boarders are especially mean to long boarders. They see themselves as superior because it’s more difficult to control a short board, therefore they’re ‘better than’ any short boarders.
Obviously there’s a local culture too, those who’ve been surfing the same beaches for generations HATE tourists and newbies because they don’t know the local unwritten rules. Some areas will be friendlier than others.
If you’re new to this all, just find your own little spot on the beach and stick to it. Get good at it before you start going into more well known and crowded areas.

Topped up board paint for the summer. Plus a message on the back for the sharks.
