ride a cowboy • on ao3

Sweat beats down May’s back in the heat of the back of Eddie’s truck, the Texas sun making the black interior feel like a personal sauna as she rides him. It’s horrible and amazing all at once.
It’s been three days of staying in El Paso to visit Chris and the 126, who are apparently the group of firefighters that the 118 worked with during those wild fires a few years ago, and May and Eddie haven’t gotten a minute alone together. Between keeping their relationship a secret as is and the constant plans that they have per Bobby, it’s been all but hell to not say fuck all and drag each other into the nearest broom closet.
“Jesus you look fucking amazing.” Eddie grunts and digs his hands into May’s hips harder. She grins at him, tipping the cowboy hat she has on down while continuing to bounce up and down.
“Imagine what that girl in the bar would think of this.” Last night was the most eventful of the trip- mainly because May nearly broke some random girls nose in the bar for laying across Eddie’s lap and trying to put his hat on, everyone in Texas knows what that means so when she tried to play coy it only pissed May off more.
“I never knew you were the jealous type.” She probably shouldn’t be considering their situation but seeing another woman lean in close enough to kiss Eddie had May’s eye twitching. She managed to keep her cool and direct the girl over to her group of friends, convincingly acting like she thought she was just too drunk and should get a cab home, at least she thinks she was convincing.
“Possessive might be a better word.” May leans down and kisses Eddie, hand pressing flat to the trucks ceiling for better balance and a throaty moan falling out of her lips when he starts to thrust into her harder.
They’re parked on some no-name road with sand as far as the eye can see and some mountains off in the distance that would make an amazing view if they weren’t preoccupied on trying to get off before anyone notices they’re gone. It hasn’t been long enough for either of them to get worried but May still rocks herself in the way she knows will get Eddie worked up.
“Such a tease.” His teeth dig into May’s shoulder, marking her even more than she already is. With as much possession May can show over Eddie outwardly, he sure does like to leave behind bruises, hickeys and teeth marks any chance he can get- May fucking loves it. She’d let him leave her black and blue all the way up her throat if they didn’t have people they had to go see after this.
“Says you in those fucking cowboy boots.” Hearing Eddie’s natural Texan accent come out more and his old wardrobe being used has made May wetter than she’d ever like to admit. There’s something about the way he seamlessly falls into the cowboy aesthetic that draws May in.
“I think your cowgirl boots and skirt are more tempting.” They somehow flip so Eddie’s on top without slamming into any part of the truck.
“You love this skirt.” The sliver of jean fabric passing as a skirt is bunched up at May’s waist and her panties are somewhere discarded on the floor, she thought Eddie was going to tear through each item with his teeth when they finally pulled over.
“Damn right I do.” May’s freshly manicured nails cut into Eddie’s shoulder blades when he lifts her to settle himself deeper in her cunt.
“I love Texas.” Her voice sputters and she clings onto Eddie harder, feeling sweat slip between them and watching how his hair sticks to his forehead in an unfairly sexy way.
“I love you.” It’s not registered as a love confession and instead May finds herself moaning too loudly, letting herself be fucked into roughly as she comes undone and soon falls slack under Eddie.
“I love you too.” She says once she feels Eddie start to calm down too, rolling to his side to pull May atop him since there’s really no room to lay side by side in this truck.
“We should get back.” Their eyes meet and May bites her lip before leaning to kiss Eddie again, making sure to linger there so she can straddle across his lap again.
“Or we go again?”
“We just finished.” There’s no real annoyance in the words and Eddie only laughs a little.
“When has that stopped us before?” She asks while reaching to adjust the cowboy hat back onto her head as Eddie shakes his head with a grin, already skating his hands back up May’s sides to drag her back into him.

christmas party • on ao3

• teen & up rating • word count > 1,457
• tags > eddie diaz/may grant, age gap, secret relationship, past hookups, drinking, light angst, good ending, mutual pining, may grant centric

It’s been three months since they slept together and they’ve barely even looked at each other since then- it didn’t bother May, or she didn’t think it did, they had an agreement that it was one drunken night and that’s it. But now, watching Eddie be flirted with by some woman, May feels like maybe that night affected her more than she thought.
She downs another glass of champagne and adjusts her dress before looking anywhere but at Eddie. It’s the 118’s Christmas party and they’re a couple hours in, food has been plowed through, drinks are being sipped, laughs echoing around, smiles on everyone’s faces, and May- May thinks she could cry. There’s a pit in stomach that churns so violently she thinks it may be eating her from the inside out, gnawing in her intestines and spitting them back out til she feels physical pain just sitting on a barstool.
“Hey May, want another drink?” Maddie’s cheery voice takes May’s attention away from her thoughts and she quickly nods to the smiling girl.
Between the hours she’s been here and that woman showing up not even a full two hours ago, May has to have gone through an entire bottle of champagne on her own. She doesn’t feel it. She almost wonders if it’s fake stuff and she’s actually stone cold sober- that’s the only explanation for why she’s still so emotional. Usually she’s a happy and giggly drunk, if not a bit horny, but all she feels now is heartache.
“So, what’s up?” There’s a lean of Maddie’s body towards May that makes it look like she’s trying to be secretive but her volume is anything but.
“Hm?” May sips her freshly poured drink and gives her best confused look.
“You look like a kicked puppy.” Maddie deadpans and May sputters on the liquid in her mouth, feeling the bubbles burn her nose and having to cough to clear her throat out.
“What? No I don’t.” The lie flows off her tongue just as easily as it does anytime someone asks about her love life and she tells them she’s happily single- not pinning after a relationship that will never happen.
“Did something happen? Is it someone at college-?” As Maddie’s talking May lets her eyes wonder behind her shoulder, heart all but shattering when she sees that girl kissing Eddie square on the lips, under the mistletoe with Buck and Hen cheering them on proudly. May drops her eyes and again, downs the rest of her drink.
“Oh is it Eddie?” Her head shoots up in a moment of panic that somehow Maddie’s figured out that Eddie and May had sex.
“Because I’m sure you’ll find a relationship soon. I know Darrius didn’t work out but there’s plenty of people out there.” Despite the relief of not being found out, May still feels her heart clench.
“Yeah, plenty of people.” The glass in her hand gets set down before May can hold it so tight it smashes, she takes to twisting her fingers together on her lap instead.
“C’mon let’s go distract you.”
-
The feeling won’t go away even as Karen and Athena tell her all their bad breakup stories, Maddie staying silent on the matter for obvious reasons but still chiming in with small jokes about how May’s too gorgeous to be so sad and whatnot. She doesn’t know what half the things they say are. She’s been staring at her drink with forced laughs and resisting the urge to try and glance back at where Eddie is. It’s not her right to go looking for him or to feel heartbroken by him- he’s just living his life, it’s not his fault she got too attached after only one night together.
But- it’s not just that night together. It’s how they interact anytime they see each other, it’s how kind and caring Eddie is, it’s how good he was to her that night, it’s him knowing her without any of that stupid small talk build up, it’s how his arms felt around her, it’s how he looks doing the job he loves and being so damn good at it. It’s everything about him that draws May in. He’s someone she can’t forget even if she tried. They see each other too often to try and completely let go of him, and it’s killing her.
“What’s going on over here?” Buck greets, Eddie and that woman in tow with the rest of the 118. May makes a point not to look up at them, she knows Eddie would find her eyes the same natural way he always does.
“May’s a little upset about being single so we’re sharing bad breakup stories to cheer her up.” Karen sums up and May’s cheeks burn in embarrassment. She hates it here and wishes she was in her dorm, which says something, since she usually does anything in her power to stay away from that place.
“Oh I’ve got loads of breakup stories.” Buck grins and plops down next to her.
“So you obviously remember Abby right? She was like a decade older than me and-.” May nearly throws up but thankfully her phone starts to vibrate and she stands abruptly.
“Sorry I gotta take this.” It’s a random number but gives her an excuse to start to bound down the steps of the station and go outside, keeping her phone pressed to her ear with a fake conversation flowing out of her mouth the whole time. God she feels pathetic.
-
Twenty minutes into sitting on the ground against the side of the station, Eddie slides down to be next to her.
“You okay?” A shrug is all she offers, the tears on her cheeks have dried over and she’s done her best to wipe the black streaks of makeup left behind off.
“May, c’mon, talk to me. I’m right here.” A beat of silence passes where all that happens is the wind blows over them and May shivers.
“At least take my jacket.” The suit coat is warm and it’s sweet of Eddie to drape it over May’s shoulders, but all she feels like doing is sinking into it and crying, sobbing and begging him not to be with anyone else- she pulls the jacket tighter around herself.
“Who’s the girl you brought?” The name has been repeated multiple times to May throughout the night but she hasn’t bothered to learn it.
“Marisol, we were a couple for a little.” She remembers hearing about that girl and how quick that relationship ended.
“You seem happy with her.” It makes sense to a point, Eddie getting back with one of his exes instead of perusing someone like May, someone so inexperienced and young.
“She’s just a friend.” May curls her knees up and drops her head onto them, finally meeting Eddie’s eyes.
“You were kissing her.” It’s not meant to sound so damn childish- so upset- but she can’t help it and she’s drunk so she doesn’t care right now.
“Only because Buck and Hen were insisting, she knows she’s just here as a friend.”
“If she’s just a friend why would you bring her?” Nobody else brought someone who was “just a friend” it’s all partners aside from May and Ravi who are single.
“The team has been bugging me about getting into a relationship. I- I didn’t want to bring her, I wanted…” He trails off and May lifts herself up a little, keeping eye contact with Eddie as she does.
“Wanted what?”
“I wanted to take you.” He leans in closer and a warm hand finds its way to May’s chin, fingers tipping her head up slowly, their breaths mixing before Eddie finally presses his lips to hers.
“I haven’t been able to get you out of my head.” Eddie admits once they part and he can rest his forehead against May’s.
“Seeing you with that woman was breaking my heart.” It’s so much, too much, to say right now but Eddie cups his free hand to her jaw and breathes in a sigh.
“I know, I could see it on your face, I told her to leave. I’m so sorry for hurting you.” They kiss again and May pushes up into it until she’s sitting in his lap, bare knees against the concrete on either side of Eddie’s hips, and his hands gripping her hips.
“Tell me you won’t leave me, tell me we’ll figure something out.” ‘Tell me I won’t see you with anyone else is what she almost says, biting her tongue to hold herself back.
“We’ll figure this out, I promise.” Her whole body leans into Eddie’s as she smashes their lips together and lets him pull her impossibly closer.
