Kaito and Kokichi- Doubt and Trust
One thing I still don’t agree with is that Kokichi is the embodiment of doubt while Kaito is the embodiment of trust bc both are more than capable of working together with others and to doubt others, it is more that which one they lean more on.
Kaito prefers to trust people, because his gut actually is pretty good at discerning what kind of person he is dealing with. He has zero issues pressing on Shuichi on trial 1, pressing on Kirumi in trial 2, Kiyo in trial 3 and Kokichi on trial 4 when they start to act weird.
He straight up tells Shuichi to confess to the crime in trial 1. So it is not really to the point people makes it out to be that he is “just so blindly trusting” as much as it is hard for him to believe people he had already made a strong judgement call about their character to be wrong. That’s why he resisted as much with admitting Kaede was the culprit. He needed a reason why she of all people would do what she did.
For Gonta, nothing in his body language, or how he talks, points at him trying to deceive them at all, because he doesn’t remember. This guy, who had no trouble calling it out when Kaede, Kirumi, Kiyo and Kokichi started to “speak strangely”, when their behavior shifted during the trial, even if with Kaede he didn’t think she was the culprit straight up, would have caught on and commented on that himself otherwise.
And with Maki, so far her behavior and choices did nothing to suggest that she was out there to get one of them killed. If she was as bad as others thought she was, she had every opportunity to get Ryoma killed herself with having his motive video and access to her own lab. Instead, she kept to herself and kept them away from her lab, and when the cover was up and she was in the dining hall, what she said boils down to asking for them to not try to attack her so she won’t have to defend herself.
He was more than aware that she “looked like she could fight” as he called her down to the game room in chapter 1, when he was rallying others to fight back against Monokuma when the time limit happened, so it wasn’t just that he just thought that just because she was a girl. It was because she made no attempt to harm them even when she had every tool at her disposal to do so. She could have easily taken first blood perk if she truly wanted to and could bring herself to.
So it is not exactly a blind belief so much as he still, like a sane person, makes judgement calls on others’ personalities before deciding to put his trust in them or not. It is an active choice he makes, which he says as much himself. Taking his agency in all that just leaves a sour taste in my mouth.
And with Kokichi, he certainly is guarded given that he is with strangers in this weird situation, but he was more than down to cooperation in chapter 1. He did help others air their grievences from the despair tunnel during breakfast so they could move on, and while attempting said tunnel, he was more than spirited to try and get out together, until he realized after an entire day of trying that wasn’t their ticket out.
He starts actual uncooperative attitude after Rantaro dies, by refusing to work with others to investigate the crime. And he seems to take Ryoma’s suggestion of mastermind getting Rantaro lured to killed by Kaede because two were loudly opposing the game and went after the game runners openly seriously too, which he mentions during the morning talk when chapter 2 starts.
He is fine with teaming up with Gonta to get everyone watch the videos together, he is fine with working with Miu for the gadgets and even offers to get out all together with everyone, and he seems delighted whenever you seem to take his side/whenever you spend time with him when he offers to think a way out of their current problems.
He is fine with teaming up if someone has a working solution, but when there is none, and even him hinting quite openly at how weird Kirumi’s motive video situation was and that people still believed the flashback lights despite all that, it is more than sensible of him to assume that anyone there really is one flashback light away from the murder.
And if he outed that fact, assuming they believe him to begin with, that would be signing his death warrant like Rantaro, Kaede and Angie did. I feel like people really forget the scene with Miu about electrobombs in all this too- he openly admits to wanting to end the game (which he did during his insect meet n greet speech too) AND asks for open cooperation for it.
And during chapter 2, when first flashback light appeared, he like everyone else sans Kaito at that point, suspected it, and when Kaito said he wants to use it, was saying “Come on let’s go guys”. He didn’t try to be the whole “lonewolf who is the only one who is smart enough to understand what is going on”, but the way others kept acting even if he tried to hint or outright say things, he at some point did get jaded, especially with who first three killers turned out to be.
Kaede and Kirumi must have been a real shock to him too, since he kept pressing on Maki so much entire trial 2, and had solid reasons to think she killed Ryoma than Kirumi, and unlike Angie, he did seem shaken by Kirumi saying that they just doomed an entire nation by solving this case. He is swept up along that narrative just as much as others does until Kaito talks about fuck that, he wants to live.
At least in my reading of him, he is far more emotionally affected by the events going on around him, even if he tries to deny so.
Of course he didn’t completely trust people he newly met, but it is not like anyone came to him with a sensible plan that didn’t boil down to “we try to fight with impossible odds and die” for him to work with.
Whole “be my friend instead” point is worth mentioning here too, because he was more than ready to work together with Shuichi during trial 4, because he knew they wouldn’t believe him if he told the truth, but they would all die otherwise.
Detective boy was smart enough to figure other culprits out, and could point the finger when it came down to it, which he criticized others for not wanting to do so in trial 2. I see it as far less shippy than fandom seems to take it, but more as an attempt at trying to offer a partnership if at least for one trial, and why he seems to take it so badly when Gonta denies the crime and Shuichi is lying to corner him in trial 4, even if he did it with good intent and not so differently from how he did it in the other trials.
It is just… it feels like a disservice to deny the struggles they had in believing others and doubting their motives, by boiling it down to both are capable just one.

Kodaka April Fools tweets 2024
Lying just because it's April Fools' is so dull. Honestly painful to watch. Lying in general doesn't do you any good. In my younger days, I told every lie I could, saying some genuinely insane stuff about being a supreme leader of evil and whatnot, and thanks to that, now that I'm in my thirties, I got famous for all the wrong reasons and can't find a stable job because people think I'm associated with the yakuza... Sigh, I wanna deck my cringe younger self's face. Quit lying for fun while you can.
My classmates aren't doing great either. Thinking you're hot shit during your school days always comes back to bite you... My advice to my past self: slow and steady effort is worth more than any talent. Also, the part of life you spent larping with that silly horse laugh is not going to be one you'll want to remember later. I wish I could make that clear to him. White lies aren't a thing. Talent is never enough. My class is proof of that. Wanna know what my classmates are like now that we're in our thirties?
Akamatsu became a piano teacher. Her player skills capped off in her teens, it seems. But she's not that good at teaching so she's considered kinda mid at her job. And now she's struggling with the father of a student incessantly hitting on her. Tough world to live in.
Toujou opened a housekeeping company but she was too strict with her employees so everyone quit. And now she's doing everything on her own. Sucks to be in your thirties without any successors or employees. She's a prime example of how being so much better than anyone else doesn't do you any good. Well, she's always working for celebrities, so she's doing well financially, but I heard about some major court fight about a missing item under suspicion of theft from one of her clients. That can't be nice.
Yumeno got to her thirties still saying magic is real, so she's past the point of no return. She agrees that's an unhinged way to live, but she's too old to suddenly change gimmicks. Work takes her all over the country, but her gimmick doesn't allow her to publicly drink, so she has to get plastered alone in her hotel room after shows. I wish she could fix her life with real magic.
Harukawa? ...Haven't heard that name in a long time. Now she was a living edgy fantasy. The past tense was because I hadn't heard of her in a long time. I don't know the details, but apparently, she went to some war zone outside of Japan because her first love didn't want to date her. Takes some real edgelord to react to a broken heart like that, but if she's still alive, I have no idea how her thirties are treating her. My personal guess is that she's a mother of many.
Chabashira opened her Aikido school but is having a hard time attracting students. So she had the idea of starting an anti-sexual-harassment campaign that could double as advertisement, but thanks to her cluelessness when it comes to romance, she got canceled for mistakenly tossing men in regular couples. She's still doing the "degenerate males" bit in her thirties. Girl really needs to get on with the times. Rumor goes that she still downs huge packs of tequila bottles with Yumeno every now and then. Really don't think there's any salvaging her reputation.
Shirogane is an office lady still continuing her cosplay hobby on the side. She could be doing well if she knew how to keep her mouth shut but frequently rambles about cosplay history and etiquette, so no one likes having her around. Stay emotionally dependent on a single hobby long enough and your passion starts to close you off to others. That's her problem.
Angie was the most successful in the class! She made big money both on the art and the religion fronts. However, there were some controversies about her devotees selling counterfeits of her paintings at exorbitant prices and one magazine made a huge news coverage of it, which resulted in her catching the police's attention. She's been recently untraceable, with the rumors saying that she'll never be back to Japan.
Oh, and Iruma... Up until some point, she had the best life of all of us. She made big money off of her inventions' patents. So far so good. Things only started going off-rails after she married an ex-stripper. The two started a YouTube channel together. And later, her husband ran in last year's elections and lost big time. They got an awful debt from his election campaign and she had to get into side jobs to pay it off. And her husband? Disappeared. No word from Iruma herself about what happened. Tough world to live in.
No further updates from Kodaka in the past 3 hours, so I assume he went to sleep and will come back to tweet about the 7 remaining boys in the morning.

mmmmm Kokichi being forced to drop his evil asshole shtick to save his classmates in an emergency (ie something akin to the school catching on fire)
no thoughts just- it's something they have to act fast in and he either becomes a true monster and leaves a classmate in need of help behind, or he lets his DICE instincts take over and gets them to safety at the expense of his own. lil zest of angst if he got hurt in the process and now people are worried about him
i like the idea of this being an instance of Kokichi being a hero and Kaito short circuiting about it. Kaito does help in getting everyone to safety, but he's evacuating and not running into the danger to save someone trapped. Kaito can't wrap his head around Kokichi "dips every time hard work is involved" Ouma putting his life at risk for someone like that.
my idea for this is Kaito assumed when Kokichi was nowhere to be seen during the evacuation that he dipped and left everyone behind, then it's found out by a head count that Kokichi isn't present at all and neither is another student, they then find him and that student on the other side of the school with Kokichi injured and the other person passed out. Kaito now has to cope with the fact that one of the worst people he knows just did an act of heroism that he himself didn't have the guts to pull off.
i also love the idea of Kokichi preferring to be disliked and pushing away praise for his good deeds. like he gloats all the time about not that impressive bullshit, but the second he does something truely good and people call him a hero for it, he gets hella bitey. he gets super grumpy and strays away from everyone more than usual after this, hoping his cagey behavior will make people dislike him again so things can just go back to normal, but then Kaede has the AUDACITY to call his closing himself off "a Kokichi way of being humble". he's gonna fight her he swears (lies)
Kokcihi hating being heroic despite it being in his nature thanks to his time saving DICE's asses mmmmm

random kokichi headcanons bc why not
he has insomnia
he enjoys the mystery genre
he was a quiet kid growing up, but not necessarily shy
he's an actor, in a way. he's tried out several characters in his life. most insults and the like just don't hurt him because he's so disconnected from it as in his eyes, he's just role-playing.
(his true self is kind of an fragile person, he just doesn't want to be hurt. acting just makes him less vulnerable.)
he enjoys sleeping in weird places in his home. cupboards, the top of the fridge, in the washing machine... he's a bit like a cat.
he's a bit of a hoarder
his love languages are gift giving and physical touch
he's great at strategy games. he loves chess especially.
he has some russian blood
he's also great at math
his favorite animals are birds in general but he has a big soft spot for doves and pigeons.
he always thought he'd never make it to 18 so he lived... carelessly.
he's a bit scared of dogs
he is fully self aware about his behavior and its consequences. (he wrote that character himself, after all lol)
