no one is going to save the day.
not with that attitude they won't, is what eddie thinks. doesn't say it, though—she's too busy trying to come to a decision. there's a lot of ways to walk into a situation. there's just as many ways to walk out of one. all she feels is a helpless rush of disappointment in tess over those words and the same-old stupid streetwise bitterness behind them. eddie doesn't like that. she's never liked that, even before she knew anything about the way the world worked. likes it even less now that she does.
that disappointment shows on her face, mouth twisting down into a frown. eddie isn't very good at schooling her face. at cards, she'd lose every time—but eddie doesn't play cards and she doesn't care if tess can see that she's made her unhappy.
"you don't have to be smart about it," is all eddie says, that frown so deep that it's in her eyes now. mouth pressed, brows knit. jaw set. she pops her bottle down onto the table and it's loud enough that a few people turn around to stare as she's standing up. eddie knows who she is, what she is. she knows nobody is likely to be scared of her or to stop what they're doing just because she shows up—to most people she's just a secondhand sundress and a set of pale blue painted fingernails. a waitress or somebody's date. but there's a lot of ways to walk into a situation and eddie's pretty good at finding one that'll work.
eddie almost tells tess to wait in the car, then, if that's how she's going to be—but she usually has to store her bite up, saving it for the right moment. right now, tess isn't the one who needs it most.
she's only a few steps away when she hears the legs of tess' chair dragging on the ground as she gets up, too, and the sound raises goosebumps on her arms. eddie's good enough in a bind to keep from smiling but it's a near miss.
