winter...winter...winter...SPRING
Happy spring everyone.
As I sit to write this update, I look out our basement (T-30 days) apartment window at two feet of snow that is melting at an alarming rate (about time). Emily and I have officially made it through our first Yukon winter.
In Yukonspeak, we are now referred to as Sourdoughs. I feel that we have earned our new status, winter was long and cold, we partially froze off our asses . We spent plenty a night cold, heads to our toes (as we kept our heat on low, to save from spending all of our dough).
We hunkered down and made it through it.  I would like to give a shout out to IceBreakers Merino wool tights, I don’t know what these last months would have been like without you.
Tumblr media
With limited sunlight and cold temperatures, winter turned out to be a nice and slow time for us in the North. Even though the days were short, we were able find a lot of things to be grateful for. I now have some solid miles on my teacher shoes and Emily just finished her first week of work with the territorial government!
As the seasons continue to change, we are looking forward to what else the fast approaching midnight sunlight will bring. I am happy to share that we are moving into our own place in woods on May. 1st.
Tumblr media
Words can’t express how excited we are to make the move. Our house is 20km outside of Whitehorse, a straight shot down the Alaskan highway (bikeability is a bonus). I know we are both looking forward to growing our own food in those beautiful raised beds and sharing morning coffee while looking out over the wilderness.
Tumblr media
Come May, the sun wont be setting until 10 pm. This seasonal transition brings so much welcomed energy. I am just starting to understand the locals when they talk about not going “outside” (leaving the territory) very often. The Yukon feels like one giant playground that is calling out to be explored. With endless sunlight just around the corner, emily and i are daydreaming of adventures to be had. Our new home has two bedrooms and lots of space to camp. You’re always welcome to hop on a plane and come check out this spectacular part of the world with us!
If you need anymore incentive, there is an awesome craft brewery around the corner and down the road.
Love, Happiness, & Peace
James

visitors 1.0 / employment / etc.
Hello dear ones,
Remember in January when I said I would write a blog every 22nd of the month? I lied. I overcommitted. No no, I’ll tell you the story. Plus, this month’s instalment is coming two days early AND there’s fun in store in photographic form (check the post below this one).
So firstly, there was no Feb. instalment of this here blog because on the 22nd of that wintery month I got news from the Yukon Government (“YG” as it’s fondly known as up here), in their typical bureaucratic Hunger Games kind of phonecall, that I was “the highest qualified candidate in the competition for the Organizational Development Consultant* role”...which I applied for in November, did a multi-page, multi-faceted written assignment for in January, and face-to-face interviewed for in February (PROCESS, PROCESS, PROCESS)! So I was also told that they’d be calling my references in the next week, so I saved my blogging for the next few days, hoping that I’d have a belated but happy bit of news. Loooooooooong story short: it took them a while to call NYC for the reference checks, but I got the job! Only about a week ago. So the masters paid off eh? And the real life begins eh? Yes...both of those statements are partially true. But before all of that new stuff, I want to send a HUGE shout out to my unpaid labour (facilitation, negotiation, mediation or otherwise), and serving/cooking jobs, and New Orleans and New York stinky bike rides, and Guatemala nights dreaming in Spanish, and activist peers and elders (Bren and Jim included big time here), and partner in crime (amorsito), who have helped me to get to this point -- and to live some pretty real life experience up to next Monday when the government job starts. I have never been paid to do the things that I’m most interested in (i.e. holding space while people get vulnerable in trying to communicate and transform with each other). But I have always been fulfilled in doing these things. So here goes the salaried version! Bust outta them moulds!
Tumblr media
In other, way more stylish Vancity news: we had our first visitors to the jüꓘøn last weekend. Ma main biddies, Livo and Joanie-boy Jarvis. They were most gracious guests. They enjoyed air-mattress basement sleeps, heavenly blisters from hiking, wondrous (and WELL-deserved) views, and James’ homemade Korean dinner. ALL THIS AND MORE is what you get when you visit our casa in Whitehorse. But truly, how cool is it to get your loved ones to peek into your magic world and concur on its magical qualities? It was really beautiful to show them the things that make up our daily lives. They are big mirrors for me, and it was so nice to see my excitement for this land reflected in them.
Tumblr media
If anyone is wondering about James’ life details...please stay tuned. He is planning to be the middle ground to my blog updates. Expect something from him in the interim (between now and the 22nd of April). I don’t want to spoil all of his lovely news :) But iiiiiisn’t he looooovelyyyyyy? Iiiiisn’t he woooonderfulllll?
Tumblr media
From the sunny 8:32pm Whitehorse, my heart is with you all, emily
*if anyone wants more details/clarification on my new J.O.B. (I know it can look a bit fluffy and ambiguous), give me a call!

Well, dear ones, A snowy and warm welcome to Whitehorse, YT! About a month ago today (give or take a few hours) was the solstice (the year’s longest night). A perfect point of reflection. One of the things that came up was, dayyyyummmm, I should keep up the ol’ blog. So, let’s say, from here on out, I’ll get a post up every 22nd of the month. January’s instalment - voila:
On the solstice in Whitehorse it is cold enough, and the day is short enough that you are forced into being a bit more quiet, and thinking about what is to come...what will be different going forth...what to I need to praxis (prax·isˈ/praksəs/ noun:formal - to both think about doing and practice thinking about)? “Everything else from here on out will be different,” I found myself thinking, as the sun set around 3:40pm. Also, you are bound to sleep longer that night so technically you should get to dream more than ever that night...sending your subconscious into the past and future to check things out and report back. My dreams since moving here are all over the place. There are mishmashings of people: parents, sibs, cousins, aunties and uncles, grandparents in this world and the next, NYC homies, London ON pals, South African highschool crushes, professors and old folks I’ve worked for, tyrant restaurant bosses...and slowly, the faces of people from Whitehorse I’m starting to see on a regular basis. There are worlds colliding: my Brooklyn rooftop, James’ parents back yard fire-pit, assorted libraries of my past, Guatemalan streets, London cafes...and slowly, the snowy hiking trails we’ve climbed and cabins we’ve sat in here. It becomes more and more real that we live here every single day. We are straight up living la futura. Yet our pasts seem to flood into everyday too, with lessons and laughs.  And as the solstice reminded me, everything else from here on out will be different. And how cool is that?!
The city of Whitehorse is Kwanlin Dun First Nation’s territory (I’ll post something in the future about the SAWEET self-governance relationships established between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities here) and geeeez does its sacredness speak. The surrounding mountains make you feel as though their arms are around your shoulders. The sun shines BRIGHTLY...A LOT (common myth that its dark all the time). Ravens - guardians of the city, it seems - patrol the skies and can mimic just about any noise. My favourite is when they throat gurgle the sound of crunching snow underfoot. It makes me feel like someone’s walking with me on my solo marches to work in the quiet morning.
And the people...oh yes the people...the people are quirky and kind. The welcoming we’ve received has been a soft, smooth landing into this mountainous, rocky territory. There’s a story and a potential friend in everyone.
So here’s the bulk of what I’ve learned since leaving for the Yukon: making a decision about a new place to live is both a wonderful and terrifying thing.  Making a new home with a partner you love (and who loves you...fingers crossed people) in a place with land that surrounds, surprises, and sustains you is heavy on the wonderful. The terrifying things...like bears and avalanches and finding a job in my field...will be taken in stride as they come, I suppose.
We’re having a lovely time up here. Please tell us when you want to come experience it too :)
Love and respect, e.c.j.
