How do you come up with your comics? I want to do comics but im just really bad at it😭💀

Hello! I promise you're not uniquely bad at it! Comics are just a deceptively challenging medium.

Become an expert in your own taste! None of us create in a vacuum. I've found that I need to have a robust internal library of influences. If I'm ever feeling stuck it's usually a sign to me that I need to explore some new media. (I say this as someone who is currently in one of those phases lol)

For example, with my Withers and Devlin comic, I was first inspired by the new adaptation of Nosferatu (which is an adaptation of the 1922 silent film... which was an adaptation of Dracula by Bram Stoker... which took influence from vampire myths... repeat ad nauseum!)

I've been thinking about this one particular scene:

The reason I liked this scene so much is it tapped into a love I have for the Death and the Maiden motif in art history but also found ways to subvert it. And then recently I heard Withers referred to as "bone daddy" and I knew I wanted THAT to be a punchline.

Humor and comics go hand-in-hand because jokes are some of the simplest narrative structures. Comics are really labor intensive so keeping the story short and manageable helps in actually finishing the comic. If you're trying to improve your skills, lean into simple narrative structures, like a joke: set-up & punchline. The simpler the better!

And make no mistake, I have breakdowns about how goddamn hard it is to make comics all the time. 😂 But it's also deeply rewarding. Especially when you manage to connect with others!

Mini-Update!

PHEW! Sorry for the burst of posts all at once LOL. I get into these periods of being so overwhelmed that I can't even look at a draft......... and then suddenly I just upload all the things. 😅

Anyways, I've been working on a bunch of stuff! Some new comics, some promo art for my spouse's upcoming videogame, and then some gift art!

Thank you again to every artist who has gifted their time and beautiful art with Devlin. SOON I'LL RETURN THE FAVOR TO YOU ALL!! Last month just got so hectic but I'm excited to work on more of these. I've got lots of fun and silly ideas. I might even livestream while I work, in case anyone would be interested in hanging out while I draw!
