Ok so I saw Fallout with Tom and Chris commentating (the commentary is on YT, I won't post the link here in fear of it getting too widespread and taken down). I couldn't pause it during the thing because I had to sync up my phone with YT and Netflix with the movie, so I have to go of my memory, but these are some fun McQruise things I picked up on:

-Tom's in very much pain in Londen catacombs/parking spot/thing with stone arches, because it was just after he got back from breaking his ankle. McQ therefore redid the framing and blocking of the scene so Tom could lean on the table/didn't have to move around that much.

-Somewhere in the middle of the commentary, I don't remember where, Tom was expressing awe at a shot he found beautiful and he said 'McQuarrie' instead of 'McQ'. I automatically assumed that McQ was used in more genuine moments than McQuarrie and Chris in a more genuine moments than McQ, but maybe that has to be reconsidered. Because his 'McQuarrie' was absolutely filled with awe and love and somehow I get it. McQ was Tom's nickname but now everyone is using it too, so now 'McQuarrie' actually gets the added emotion 'McQ' may have had in the beginning.

-At the end of the movie, after the curtain call, they do their usual 'I appreciate you very very much schtick' to each other but when Tom starts, the biggest pause of the whole thing is at a moment that 'I love you' would have fitted so so well in. I don't know what he settles on exactly there (I think it's something like 'I greatly admire you/working with you') but I could feel the gap where the 'I love you' could have been. And the funny thing is, he does say 'I love 'person' ' in a completely genuine moment in the rest of the commentary, about Simon. And that's a sweet and cut off moment from the rest of the commentary, but he still said it. So him not saying it about Chris while he does say it freely about Simon might mean something, maybe that he's afraid he'll get 'caught' when he says it to Chris because he actually means it this time, but thereby he also puts attention to the fact he doesn't say it to Chris, so...

-At the far end they tell the known story of 'at the Paris premiere for Fallout we sat together and you [Tom] leaned over and whispered in my ear 'we can do better', but what Tom adds and Chris only barely acknowledges (maybe he hadn't wanted Tom to say it actually) is that at that premiere Heather was sitting on the other side of Chris. So Tom and Chris made sure to sit together at a premiere (they actually said they *always* made sure to sit together at a premiere), but also the person on the other side of Chris is his wife. So it's sitting next to your wife on the same time next to your coworker. There is no director!Chris and idk Chris!Chris at this premiere, he's literally doing both at the same time or being only Chris!Chris and if that's the case, why isn't one of his daughters there at his side and is it Tom...

-They are giggling and laughing a lot it's very sweet. I think it's a great commentary to just listen to in the background of doing things, because they are so genuinely sweet together I love them so much

I have the deepest respect for McQ putting strong female characters (who have agency and their own problems and aren't just damsels in distress or sex objects) into big mainstream blockbuster movies.

I've been critical when it comes to the role of women on film for quite some time now but the more I listen to McQ talk about how he writes female roles the less forgiving I become with movies who don't give women that much agency.

Mcq's hand cupping tom's waist like it belongs there. It literally looks like it slots into place, like that notch in tom's waist is made for mcq's hand...

Them talking so close and intimately, tom turning his head to mcq, mcq not pulling back despite that's what people usually do when someone's too close. It's clear they're so comfortable in each other's spaces. AND the way tom's head turns makes it seem like he's going for a kiss!!!!

Fly High, Val

there's been a lot on my mind since i heard the news about val kilmer's passing. i've been reflecting, overthinking, being stuck in nostalgia. it's the first time in my life where i've genuinely cried after hearing a celebrity pass away, i'm not one for parasocial relationships. but well, that's what legends do to you, i guess.

i can't say enough how much top gun and tg:m have impacted my life. genuinely. i am not who i am now without it. all that is thanks to mr. kilmer. his potrayal of iceman is memorable, genuine, and incredible in it of itself. his way of bringing a character that barely has anything as a source into something that feels sincere is a mark of a great talent. like many others, top gun has changed my life in ways only art can. it's amazing what effect the desire to create does to people. val simply wanted to make art, and in doing so he left behind a great legacy.

as i've grown older, the prospect of death scares me more and more. val kilmer's death just feel like a sucker punch to my gut when i heard it (through a tumblr post nonetheless). i remembered i just felt like nothing was real. i knew he had been sick, i knew he was old, i know people die. i just never thought about the day he would. in my mind he's kinda always been invincible.

like many of you, i've chosen to ignore iceman's death. i mean, characters live on forever, right? i just think it's an even bigger sucker punch now that his death aligned with that in the movie. i'm probably gonna be sad every time i watch iceman's funeral scene from now on.

i kinda wished i could meet him once, just to say how much of an impact he's had on everybody's life. seeing everyone's responses to his death was comforting, telling me that i'm not alone in feeling this way. i'm glad i get to be reminded about the beauty of human connection every now and then, it truly is what makes life worth living.

this drawing wasn't the first one i did. i actually did another thing, but i don't know. the emotions wasn't there enough. with this drawing i just...let my hands feel. i'm sort of surprised by how it came out actually. i don't think i've ever done this kind of lighting before. he kinda looks like a statue, frozen in time.

anyway, i just wanted to leave a little something for me to remember this moment, this feeling. it's bittersweet--more bitter than sweet now. but i want to look back to this post and think about the sweeter things. time will soothe the wounds.
