I don't know what paddington is doing on that list, but it made me think of the time someone drew a picture of the queen with paddington after she died, and we had scores of people losing their minds at the idea that paddington bear wasn't the same kind of communist as them

Let's Talk About Missing Persons

So, I've seen this post circulating last week, and a few others like it in the past year. I think this probably needs to be discussed every few years, and it feels like time.

First, a few caveats: there are reports on the post that Abby has been located and is fine, so no need to reblog and also that's great news, I'm very happy she is safe. Second, I did not especially doubt the veracity of the post, so I'm not impugning the people who made and posted it, but I also declined to reblog it for reasons I'll get into. Third, I know that especially in marginalized communities it can be dangerous to involve the police, and that Missing White Woman Syndrome means it can be difficult to get media coverage. I understand why Abby's community may have chosen to search for her in the way they did.

However, for everyone's safety, I do not link any missing persons post that requires you to contact an individual to report the missing person's whereabouts. If the poster doesn't ask you to contact the police or a known missing persons organization, I won't do it.

This is for the safety of the missing person.

When you see a post with someone's photo, name, and last known whereabouts, and you are asked to contact an individual -- a family member, partner, friend, etc -- what you are being asked to do is report on the whereabouts of one person you don't know to another person you don't know. You don't know that the person you're talking to isn't an abusive partner or parent, a stalker, or a person who means them material harm. One of the Insta accounts in the missing image doesn't appear to exist, and another has no bio and very little captioning on their images. I couldn't verify that Abby even knew these people.

Again: when I looked at the image, it looked sincere to me. I didn't doubt those people were earnestly searching for a friend they were worried about. But also, an abuser doesn't look like an abuser until they do. So I don't make exceptions, because a missing person is missing but a victim outed to their abuser has strong odds of being murdered. The most dangerous time in the life of an abused person is when they are leaving their abuser. Even if a victim simply logs on to say "Hey, I'm fine, these people mean me harm" the abuser has now flushed them out of hiding, and manipulated them into making a public statement.

If you can't verify positively that the person searching does not mean the missing person harm, you should not be circulating a post, full stop. At the very least, if the community doesn't wish for the help of the police (understandable) or can't get the help of an organization or community (frequent), the missing persons poster should advise you to speak to the missing person, not the searcher, and notify them they're being sought, as long as it's safe for both you and them to do so.

This isn't intuitive. We want to help, and search posters like that tug on the heartstrings. We know that when the police get involved even in something this innocuous, it can be perilous for everyone. But in situations where someone is so vulnerable, we have to concern ourselves first with harm reduction, which in this case means not spreading someone's photo with a stranger's contact information on it.

I'm glad Abby was found and is fine and that her searchers were in earnest. But that will not always be the case, and it's important to remember that.

All the stuff you learn from your attempts at healthy coping doesn't get erased the moment you relapse. And you can use that knowledge to pick yourself back up and try again when you're ready. It's not a case of starting over from scratch, it's a case of stumbling and getting back up

I feel you so, so much.

For what it's worth, I do have two things that I tend to need at least one of in order to keep on when I hit those walls.

One is just someone - not even necessarily a human someone - to sit with me and let me think out loud to them. Because of a story about my Mom having my cat do this for me when I was a kid, my household calls this "catting" or "being a cat".

The other is a peppy song playlist. I have a few. This is one of them. They make me want to physically move. This is only helpful if what I need to get done involves more movement than brains, like doing chores, but I am inevitably shocked how much it helps.

Neither is foolproof. Gods how I wish they were! There are too many days I just don't get shit done no matter how much I want to, or even need to.

And yeah, that is 1000% because I am still massively, massively burnt out.

You might be, too. Honestly I think a lot of people are. The last several years have just sucked mightily for a lot of people, and it's not easing up enough fast enough.

But if nothing else? You're not alone.

Brave of Neil Gaiman to create the tv adaptation of two of his books (Good Omens & The Sandman).

With two insanely good-looking actors in each show (Michael Sheen & David Tennant, Tom Sturridge & Ferdinand Kingsley (feat Queen Vivienne)).

Who previously played characters in the same film/series without their characters ever meeting (Sheen/Tennant in Bright Young Things, Sturridge/Kingsley in Hollow Crown).

To then years later be playing characters (Aziraphale & Crowley/ Dream & Hob) who somehow manage to be meeting constantly over an extended period of time.

(Plus, their characters are currently the highest ships in their fandoms on AO3).

DEAR EDUCATIONALLY NEGLECTED HOMESCHOOLERS

I’ve gathered some resources and tips and tricks on self-educating after educational neglect. This is only what I did and what I know helped me. I’m about to graduate college with honors after having no education past the age of 9. I wouldn’t be here without the following. Everything is free, and at/well above the standard for education in the US.

The holy grail: Khan Academy. Nearly every course you could take is available here, in order and by grade level. Their open-source free courses rival some of the college classes I’ve taken. This is your most solid resource.

For inattentive types: Crash Course offers a variety of courses that are snappy, entertaining, and extremely rewarding. They work for my ADHD brain. They also have college prep advice, which is essential if you’re looking to go to higher education with no classroom experience.

To catch up on your reading: There are certain books that you may have read had you gone to school that you’ve missed out on. This list is the most well-rounded and can fill you in on both children’s books and classic novels that are essential or at least extremely helpful to be familiar with. You can find a majority of these easily at a local library (and some for free in PDF form online low key). There are a few higher level classics in here that I’d highly recommend. If it doesn’t work for you, I’d always recommend asking your local librarian.

*BE AWARE* The book list I recommend suggests you read Harry Potter books, and given their transphobic author you may or may not want to read them. If you choose to, I’d highly recommend buying the books secondhand or borrowing from a library to avoid financially supporting a living author with dangerous and damaging views.

TEST, TEST, TEST: Again, Khan Academy is your go-to for this. I don’t personally like standardized testing, but going through SAT and ACT courses was the best way I found to really reveal my gaps so that I could supplement.

Finally: As much as you can, enjoy the process. Education can be thrilling and teach you so much about yourself, and help shape your view of the world. It can get frustrating, but I’d like to encourage you that everyone can learn. No pace is the perfect pace, and your learning style is the right learning style for you. In teaching yourself, be patient, be kind, and indulge in the subjects you really enjoy without neglecting others. You are your teacher. Give yourself what others chose not to.

Sir, your “special spoilers” are very confusing. First of all, Crowley and Aziraphale’s deaths are lacking coherence: are they eaten by space-time goats, or dying because of holes and/or pies? Is Crowley transformed as a deer before the pie incident? Plus, you said it’s happening in the very first five minutes, but they also have their wedding day (before dying I suppose) and Crowley & Sadie ends up divorcing! You finally end up saying that Aziraphale won’t even be part of S3… but he’s supposed to be The Snaffler villain! And what about Sadie and Dottie? Are they investigating their (ex)husbands’ deaths, going on holiday… or starting a throuple with Furfur? Plus, you’re writing about badgers, nightingales, rabbits, chinchillas… I’m not sure who the characters or cast are, what the plot is… Could you enlighten me on all this? All this incoherence is quite disturbing, but you said that David Tennant is excited to find out the new scripts, so I suppose all you said here is for blurring lines, right? :0

Anything I reply about Season 3 is me typing something to try and remind people that I'm not going to answer questions about the future. I suppose I could always go back to just typing "wait and see".
