can we talk about how poor tommy had to be the fucking mental stability for MULTIPLE grown ass men as a child. Wilbur making Tommy his main reason for getting out of bed every day. Dream saying today that he and tommy would have MULTIPLE HOUR CALLS EVERY SINGLE DAY.

How did Tommy turn out so. *normal* with all the shit that got thrown onto him jesus chrost

C!Tommy is somehow at the heart of everything and by lore he was just 9-18 throughout😭😭 Tommys character will never not be interesting and amazing to study.

someone on the Reddit asked why c!Dream was so obsessed with c!Tommy and of course I had to answer. Pretty proud of my response so I’m posting it here too!

Anyway, I think the first reason Dream is so fascinated by Tommy is that he sees him as uniquely defiant. Sure, other people have gone against him, but (in his head at least) they’ve only done so when he was weak. When he’s had the overwhelming power to crush them, they’ve backed down. Tommy… doesn’t. Even with his nation slaughtered and no real way of fighting back, even when he’s under a harsh prohibition with all eyes on him, he refuses to ever back down and give up what he believes is right, and to Dream, that makes him both an unique threat… but a potentially invaluable ally.

In addition, Tommy to him, I think, represents control. Ever since the Disc Saga, he’s been fighting for control over him, and somewhere along the way I think that sort of merged with the idea of control over the whole server. In his head, if he gets Tommy under his heel, he’ll get the server under his heel, or he’ll at least have a huge advantage. While, of course, the disc finale was staged, I think his thoughts on Tommy being key to the server is somewhat true in his head, though I don’t think he realises it. It’s because he links achieving one of his goals to achieving others. Control over Tommy equals control over the server equals a big happy family equals true immortality for him and everyone he loves.

Finally… I genuinely think, on some really screwed up level, Dream genuinely likes and cares for Tommy, just in an incredibly unhealthy way. He and Tommy were very good friends during the servers early days- hell, they were friends up until Dream betrayed Pogtopia- after all. And I think, in Dreams head, that never really ended. His manipulation of Tommy into seeing him as his best friend in Exile was absolutely to use his loyalty, but I also think Dream genuinely wanted his friendship, just like in the days of the Disc Wars. It’s just the games they’re playing now have gone from “capture the flag but with discs” to “psychological and physical abuse”.

Dream’s a surprisingly emotional and even childish character under his emotionless facade, as we can see on the rare occasions it slips, and I think Tommy’s one of his few connections to his real self left, too. One he can’t fully sever, so he justifies it through plots and schemes. Tommy has to be the one he goes after for any number of reasons and not because he’s one of the few attachments he hasn’t been able to force himself to leave behind. His eschewing of anything and anyone he loves isn’t a mentally healthy or sustainable idea, and I think in large part his fixation on Tommy is a coping strategy for his self-induced… well, loneliness. Despite what he pretends, Dream is a person, and a genuinely caring one deep down. It’s just that traits been so twisted by him trying desperately to change it, to cut it off as he sees it as a weakness, that it’s turned horrifically toxic. In that way, he’s sort of a parallel to Tommy too, in that Tommy’s who he would be if he didn’t try and close himself off to the world, and whether subconsciously or not, I think Dream notices it and assigns him more importance because of it.

And, yes, on some level there’s a fucked up sense of justice to it too. I don’t think it’s hatred, if Dream actually hated Tommy I think he would have let him die in exile and used that as a method of control instead, but I think on some level he genuinely sees himself as sort of a guiding hand towards this troubled youth. He’s punishing Tommy’s “crimes” to a disproportionate level both as an example to others and to set him on the right track. (Crimes in italic because they’re usually so petty compared to the punishment if they’re real at all they don’t actually matter).

I’m genuinely fascinated by Dream and Tommy’s dynamic in this story, and I think it’s a whole lot more complex and layered and tragic than people give it credit for, so thanks for letting me talk about it!

Adding to the list of things that fuck me about ctommy is the fact that he is such a natural born leader and yet he loathes it. He can have people who hate him one minute dying for him the next but it’s not something he ever wanted. He wanted some peace and quiet to scam some passerby and work on his carrot farm, he didn’t want to be leading armies, he doesn’t want lives in his hands. BUT! BUT! HE’S SO GOOD AT IT IT JUST ISNT FAIR IT IS T FAIR

(Quick context i hc him as a demon): I NEEED more batshit crazy Tommy aus. Like he's CLINICALLY INSANE. Hallucinations, drugs, alcohol, all that jazz (the drugs & hallucinations part is canon but yknow). Like imagine Jinx just slightly, SLIGHTLY more controlled/empathetic. He uses his image as the child to take what he wants and when he can't get his way, he'll just eat through it. Like literally. And by batshit I dont mean badass, sure, that's cool, but i mean crazy. Ofc Tubbo & Ranboo still love him but everyone else is a lil scared of what's going on in lil bros head. Even worse because it's stress induced so Exile was HORRIBLE, people purposefully making him go into episodes just for entertainment or because it'll "motivate" him when all he really needs is some peace. He's so tired.

okay now imagine this Tommy but extremely religious. Like he prays before every meal and every week he has a prayer sesh. The prime cross he carries is like Jinx's Pow-Pow. If it's destroyed his rage is uncontrolled. He puts everything into being loyal and devoted to SOMETHING. Drista & Kristin have taken a liking to him. Him & Drista are crazy together in the worst way for others and best for themselves. The more he accepts his insanity and unstableness, the more solid things become. Puffys trying to help him at least with his paranoia but it can get hard. (religious horror Tommy come home; please expand on how DARK Tommys story truly is)

C!Sam never wanting to hurt C!Tommy again does something to me. Imagine Sam seeing Tommys brutality massacred body held by Dream who's reciting things no true man could understand. The child, the one he was supposed to protect by locking Dream up is gone, his soul left to rest in Limbo forever. He didn't mean for this to happen, no matter how annoying Tommy was, Tom trust HIM, and he failed him. Desperately failed him. There was no coming back from this, ever. He's lost his valentine, his friends and the kid, all because of Dream. If Dreams on the brink of insanity then Sam's a goner. They're all 3 somehow stuck with each other. Like brain (Dream), braun (Sam) and beauty (Tom).

That one scene where Ponk was yelling at Sam and hits the wall to where Tommy has boarded himself up and he asks what it is. Sam weakly responding how Tommy has isolated himself so he'd be safe and Ponk getting angrier asking WHY he has to do that. Sam trying to explain what he did wasn't WRONG but maybe he's starting to doubt it was RIGHT.

C!Tommy having faint memories of people he knew when he was younger. He doesn't quite remember how he and Tubbo met, or Eryn. He just remembers he loves them, that their names were special. That includes Purpled.

Purpled thinking no one quite remembers him anymore and expects to just have to ADD himself into things, so when he sees Tommy walking down the street with Tubbo he assumes they'll just walk past but instead Tommy perks up and smiles yelling his name with his stupid L'manburg accent.

Purpled hesitates but before he knows it, Tommy is hugging him and asking too many questions. It makes him feel warm inside. Like he's complete. From that day on, he was always two steps away even on the other side he was ready to listen & care for Tommy. The boy whose legacy would outshine all remembered the boy who had nothing, not a staple of his existence. How could Purpled NOT fall for him?
