I can do it with a broken heart is still such a wild song to even exist. she's shouting from the rooftops: "I spent the last god knows how many years masking depression and alcoholism and fuck all of you I did it well!" It's not a Better Off Without Him Anyways power anthem. It's I may have looked Better Off but actually I quite wanted to Die and was crumbling to pieces every night backstage and no amount rhinestone bodysuits and girl group dinner parties could really put a patch on how damaged I felt. It's a crazy level of brutal honesty most would never expect of a mega popstar already at the top of her game. What could she possibly gain from admitting her faults at this point? Why not just run the victory lap? But she's such a confessional songwriter at heart she simply Cannot Help herself but divulge that she's been faking it 'til she makes it for as long as she can really remember at this point and breaking down more than not. and that's Taylor Swift.

I know it's been said countless times over the last half decade and especially since Taylor announced that she'd bought back her masters, but the re-recording project really was one of the most groundbreaking efforts in recent times in the entertainment industry and charted such new territory, and as the dust settles I'm still blown away by it all. The dogged determination to push forward with the project when most (probably correctly) assumed it was futile and could never succeed to the degree it eventually did is truly remarkable.

Like, the unbelievable effort it took to not only revisit the music and the time in which it was made, but try to mimic in as much painstaking detail as possible (even though it's inherently impossible) so that they were a close enough match to be swappable to the originals for licensing purposes, is something that can't really be defined. I know fans have their own opinions of the end product, but I really can't stress enough how impressive what Taylor and her team accomplished with the project was.

And in the end they absolutely served their purpose. They allowed for Taylor to regain control of how her music was used and shared, and in so doing also ushered in a new generation of fans discovering her back catalogue, and gave older fans a peek behind the curtain with the vault tracks and prologues. And in so doing, in a long and winding way, allowed her to buy back the originals that were so precious to her.

Like I said, I'm not saying anything new. This was just spurred on the fact that I've got this full-discography playlist on shuffle and it jumps between originals and TVs all the time, and when the TV songs come on, I'm just amazed at the sheer scope of what the project meant and accomplished, both for her personally and the music industry in many ways. She took this very painful moment in her life and made lemonade out of those lemons by blazing her own trail and in the end it ended up being proven right.

I so hope we hear her reflections on all that one day because if it's knocking me back as some girl on the internet, I can't imagine what it's like for the person from whom this all flowed.
