Toko, Sho, and Balance
Many people are aware that Kodaka said Toko best represented Danganronpa. However, in the art book, Kodaka said that Genocider Sho best symbolized Danganronpa. In truth, they both are a half and together represent the whole. Yin and Yang are the best way to describe these two. Specifically, Toko is Yin and Sho is Yang.
In most Chinese compounds, the positive word comes first, but this isn’t the case for Yin and Yang, where the negative word comes first. In this case, the negative side is considered dominant, like Toko being the dominant personality.
When it comes to literal definitions, Yin (陰) means shade and Yang (陽) means sun. You may remember this Genocider quote: “Behind every dark and gloomy soul lives another that shines as bright as the sun!”. Genocider refers to herself as the shining sun and Toko as the gloomy one. Yin can also mean “cloudy”, which gives off a gloomy atmosphere.
Genocider’s quote before that also reinforces the idea of balance, “Yes, well, the world is composed of a front and a back, you know. Just like how every inning has a top and a bottom, or how in the depths of every truth lives a little lie...”.
Now onto less literal meanings, Yin is feminine, negative, passive, contractive and receptive. Yang is masculine, positive, active, expansive and repulsive. I’ll break down each of these.
- Yin is associated to more rounded feminine characteristics. Toko has a feminine name, names ending with 子 (ko) are feminine. Her first person pronoun is Atashi (あたし), however, it’s written in Hiragana, which is round and smooth. Yang is associated with sharp and masculine traits. Sho is a masculine name. Sho also refers to herself as Atashi (アタシ), but hers is written in Katakana, which is sharp.
- Toko is “negative” and Sho is “positive”. This is actually directly stated in Sho’s second free time event, but only in Japanese. Sho outright says she’s the positive to Toko’s negative. Here’s a translation:
- Toko is passive, she doesn’t do any major acts on her own, like committing a murder or helping solve a case. Sho is active, she is a murderer outside of the killing game, and also tries to be part of the trial conversations. This is another thing Sho brings up in her event, but it’s one of the wrong options. Here’s a translation:
- Toko is contractive, she is on edge, defensive, tense, and scared. Sho is expansive, she is more easygoing, content, and light. In terms of breathing, Toko is like an inhale and Sho is like an exhale.
- While Toko may not seem like someone you’d call “receptive”, she is a reader who has to stay open minded and listen to others. When she thinks Byakuya wants something, she is quick to act like or do that. Sho is more “repulsive”. She doesn’t really listen to others and her mind cannot often be wavered. She knows what she likes and knows what she doesn’t like. Despite liking Byakuya, she doesn’t listen to him to the extent Toko does.
You can also think of their talents as being opposites. Toko’s talent is to create, while Sho’s talent is to destroy. Toko starts things and Sho ends things.
Okay, this one is kind of a joke, but in Toko’s splash art, she is positioned like a crescent moon with her books being stars, while Sho is positioned like a sun with her scissors being beams.
Sorry for any mistakes, I wrote this at 3am.
