An Ode To Briana Matthews Part Deux

*Oathbound Spoilers Afoot!*

One of the many things I have enjoyed about this series is Tracy’s centering of Bree.  She is allowed to be complicated, powerful, and flawed.  She is shown being loved on furiously, being desired fiercely, and she is written in a way that makes you ache for her.  She calls something forward in me that challenges the notion of who Black girls are supposed to be in the eyes of those who deem us as too much.  Bree makes me proud because she makes mistakes, takes risks, and does not play about the people she loves.  

We have come a long way from the girl in Legendborn. 

Heavy is the crown.

Her Magic (The Consequences of The Choice)

“I push myself to my feet and walk toward him, a satisfied smile curving my lips.  As I get closer, I widen my hands again, and the thuds grow quieter and quieter as I thicken the barrier.  He can’t see me, but I can just make out the glow of his eyes.  His irises are green with fury, and I imagine what I would look like to him if he could see me…”

“A young brown-skinned girl in a long formal gown, striding toward him with her palms out wide.  A girl with deep purple magic flowing from her hand to feed the structure encasing him.  A girl raising that sphere into the air, levitating him from the ground.  A girl trained by the deepest Shadow himself, her teeth bared in an electric grin.”

Bree has come a long way from the Gala and the choice she made with the Shadow King back at the lodge.  In this scene, her confidence is on full display.  She looks strong, she flexes her prowess, and she is not holding back.  All of this came from the choice she made to go with Erebus and to burn her ancestral stream. As I said in my first ode, I loved her choice.  I knew it would be messy, I knew it would hurt.  I also knew it would be necessary.  We know Bree is a fighter, and there is little that would keep her from it.  Choosing herself meant breaking herself down to the studs to become more.  More physically, more mentally, more strategically.  Like any king worth their salt, she makes the difficult and sometimes unpopular decisions. She is finding her balance and pushing her limits until she ultimately finds the formula that works for her. At the end of Oathbound, we see her more in control. To say that the order, Erebus, and Tor's funky ass will hate to see her coming, is an understatement.

Desire/Sexuality

“Then I remember the sizzling sensation when I touch the Pendragon coin, and I wonder if he’s the one who stamped that memory onto my skin. Boys, I say quietly. I know that much…”

“I think��,” I say, watching the crowd with new eyes, "I’m into people people.”

One of the other aspects of Bree in which she became more sure of was her desires and sexuality.  We got a glimpse of it with Sel in the woods.  It was she who took the lead and kissed him, leaning into how much he wanted her, and showing him she wanted the same.  I am of the age that I remember girls being labeled as “fast” for doing something as mundane as wearing red lipstick.  In the Black community, there tends to be (at least there was when I was this age) a looking down upon of Black girls for owning their sexuality.  You get the, “Don’t bring no babies home” talk, but there is little discussion of the real world, practical shit.  Even into adulthood, if you enjoy sex and are open about it (like the men dem), you are labeled a HOE (304s as they said back in the day). This scene was so dope because we get a glimpse of her thought process in her own words.  I love that Zoe questions her, essentially prompting her to give voice to what she likes.  There is freedom even in the thought of exploration.  

So Drown and The Roof is On Fire

“I’m drowning in you, Bree.  I shouldn’t want to. I should fight it. But I can’t”

“My eyes flutter closed, then open.  I inhale a ragged breath. Exhale an answer. So drown.”

The challenge she levels at Nick made me squeal.  The way he obliged made me gasp.  Every moment where Bree is free to be a teenager exploring her sexuality is top tier.  Tracy makes these moments count, doesn’t she?  When I first started reading this series, I heard rumblings regarding the two white boys and their desire for Bree. Some conversations turned their dynamic into something dirty, and something that was happening to Bree instead of realizing she is a willing participant.  There are some interesting takes out there. I love that she is being loved on by two love interests who would set the world ablaze for her.  The fact that Bree disrupts their trajectory AND the trajectory in what Black girls deserve (love, respect, care, softness, a lil Selly Sazon) warms my soul.

“And if I want…?” My breath turns shallow, my skin burning beneath the winter coat. His brows lift in question.  “If you want…?”

“Actually, I murmur, that might be the end of the sentence.”

Clever hands aside, the conversation between these two was endearing.  The fact that she felt safe enough to express the longing she had been housing was nothing less than poetic.  Too often in media, Black girls are the sidekick, the funny one, the token, never to be chosen in a real way. We are the wisdom or the sacrifice that helps the non-Black characters have amazing epiphanies, that moves their stories forward, making the Black character disposable.  I know Tracy said, “Fuck all that!” at some point as Bree’s story progressed.  In my younger years, I had NEVER seen a Black girl exploring in this way. Being wanted and revered in this way.  Taking up space and challenging the status quo in this way.  Don’t get me started on her wanting BOFFUM.  Can’t a girl have her spicy black cat and equally as spicy Golden Retriever in peace? 

Rootcraft Girls

“Rootcrafters are Black.  Rootcrafter girls, specifically, make a good target, because a missing Black girl won’t raise alarm bells the way a missing white girl would.”

“I may not know the people in my life, but I know myself.  I won’t be able to let this go.”

When I read Valec’s birth scene, I had suspected that demons had been ingratiating themselves in the rootcraft community (especially Erebus), and for the very reason quoted above.  When Bree sees one of the girls being assaulted in the bathroom of the Rat, she springs into action.   When the warlock escapes with her, a new mission is born. Bree understands what is at stake at that moment.  She is not that far removed from the torture she experienced in the Institute.  She would not let anyone forget about the rootcrafter girls despite all of the other plates she was spinning.  My girl said, “We gon do both!”  In Legendborn, Nick and Sel spoke of things kings must do.  The sacrifice that lives under that banner.  Bree’s growth has demonstrated that she is a far superior king than Arthur and the Shadow King combined.  Her heart is what makes her more powerful than any magic she can wield.  Her intentions are pure, and she makes room for her care to wrap around the people and communities she cares about.  Bree makes hard decisions and faces the consequences head-on, plans be damned.

I love this character and have found her reach to touch a multitude of ages for various reasons.  For me, she is the niece, the daughter, the sister.  She is also me. Her fire and determination.  Her refusal to accept the unacceptable and willingness to join a fight, because those being fought for are worthy.  As Nick says, she is worthy.

For the girls who face the unknown…and leap anyway.  Bree has literally and figuratively taken the leap, and she challenges all of us in times of peril to do the same. 

I am so glad to be alive in the timeline where Bree Matthews exists.

black people. light a candle, write a note to those who have passed telling them what you have achieved in spite of the racist and intolerant conditions of this world, feel the warmth of the flame under your hand, say a prayer of rememberance if you are religious, place the note under the candle, and then blow it out.

if you have children, sit them down and tell them anything you know about the life of oldest black person you've ever met. it doesn't have to be your own family. tell them what you know about what life was like for us in the days, years, decades after emancipation. if you don't know much, look it up and learn about it together.

Scenario! Netflix has come to you and begged at your knees to make the new Ninjago reboot (no soft reboot, everything redone). How would you do it?

OK WAIT I LOVE THIS QUESTION!!

im not a really strong writer tho so im just gonna focus on really small aspects that i think they couldve changed to cater to modern audiences :,)) keep in mind i havent watched og ninjago in months 😓

seasons 1+2

- first of all,, i think the should actually keep the old designs up til season 7 still, just make it more refined for example kai’s hair… mainly i think it would show how much theyve grown in later seasons! but also fan service lol. but definitely change lloyds voice when we get to tomorrows tea i dont like his voice im sorry it makes me mad

- i dont mind the story in the first 2 seasons honestly its so fun just get rid of the whole timey wimey stuff it complicates things so much and also plot holes 😭 also the golden ninja stuff kinda becomes redundant so i think that was unnecessary also

- they couldve definitely leaned more into the found family stuff, like im HEARING found family but we dont actually see it that often!! like its the small details yk. also i think they couldve definitely leaned afford to split the ninja up more often like an A and B plot, i think it could def help character relations with specific individuals

- on this note MORE FILLER!!! i love filler actually its FUN and it shows character relationships ninjago is like the only show where i BEG and PLEAD for more filler

- after tomorrows tea they should also lean more into lloyds whole feeling about growing up so quick 🥲 i think its still an ok plot point to keep but only if youre actually willing to acknowledge the trauma that comes with it. id say also make it so that it only speeds up his growth in that moment, but after that his growing stops until season 8 where he hits puberty and then hes all caught up in age idk if that makes sense

season 3

- i honestly could not tell you what happens in season 3 i guess it can stay, but maybe dont split up lloyd from the rest?? i got bored i think 😭

- or maybe just get rid of the whole season and have zane die somehow at the end of season 2 to me this season was really boring idk!!

season 4

- season 4 GET RID OF THE LLOYD BEING CALLING KAI SELFISH AT THE START 😭 that is NOT a correct lesson dude!!! BRO IS GRIEVING!!! the rest is fine i think maybe more explanation?? on pixal and how zane got there would make sense like a flashback.. please.. i was so utterly confused

- if we are going to get rid of season 3 then there should probably be more bonding time between lloyd and garmadon before he dies

- and i would also say maybe get rid of kai and the whole green ninja stuff idk if people liked that but i think it pushed his character back a bit

season 5

- um pls more grieving for lloyd after garmadons death like add that whole cave scene from SoR into season 5 idk if that works

- AND!! if your egoing to introduce ronin they should probably add that SoR storyline into an episode so it makes more sense because i was so confused when ronin popped up too i was like who is this guy even are they trying to gaslight me

- rest is ok but id like some lloyd pov because splinter says he was super traumatised from morro but we dont get to see that 😞

- oh also i feel maybe nya should have discovered her powers a little earlier!! i cant say for sure when but isnt the whole ninja thing going against her beliefs during the whole samurai x arc idk if it contradicts each other and im not that sure how to fix it this is why im not a writer but i think season 5 is a little too late to write in her water powers because why was she even excluded in the first place 😓

- get rid of the future ice glass mirror thing because it sets up for season 6 and i dont like jays whole ideas in that

season 6

- season 6 high key misogynistic parachuting kitten has a whole video on that soooo im not gonna touch on this so much but i still like the idea of them disappearing one by one! just not the execution

- get rid of nadakhan pedophilia

- i think season 6 should have happened in the timeline and the ending makes no sense because isnt that 2 wishes from jay 😭 and also nadakhan could have found a loophole out of it im sure

- just rewrite the whole season dawg 🙁

season 7

- season 7 is just boring and i could not tell you a single thing that happens in it uh just rewrite the whole story to be more interesting (and better dialogue…)

- can we not do snakes again im so sick of snakes i could not tell you their names

- if youre gonna do a season on time maybe a back in time story would be cool??? like a whole season dedicated to that where the ninja are stuck in the past and have to work with their parents without revealing themselves. OR MAKE IT THE COWBOY SEASON I WANNA SEE THAT. just find a way so master wu can become a baby

season 8+9

- keep i love these they are perfect just maybe not love at first sight lloyd haha like more interactions between harumi and lloyd before she goes bad

season 10

- i dont mind season 10 THAT much i think cole fake out death was just kinda unnecessary tho idk

season 11 part 1

- change intros from s11 onwards to something more interesting pls

- i actually do like the tone of s11++ just maybe find a way to ease the audience into it 😭 coming off the oni trilogy into season 11 is crazy tonal shift maybe dont start off so strong with the hot tub etc etc. BUT i do like the low stakes vibes honestly

- but this season also reminded me of the 2d animated stuff which i actually dont really vibe with sorry it looks insanely cheap and idk isnt the point that they are legos 😓

- i also dont like how they made all the guys super buff and nya just like a twig

- i actually hated that lmao to me lloyd isnt super buff AT all i think hes more lean if that makes sense

- nya should be more jacked yeah

season 11 part 2

- pls fix all the time issues idk how but theres probably people really into season 11 that have done this.

- BUT i really like parachuting kittens idea of the audience THINKING theyre in the same time period as zane but as it cuts between povs we slowly realise that objects from zanes pov are old in the ninjas pov showing that zanes pov actually happened a super long time ago thats so fun and smart actually because the plot twist def wasnt earned

- uh nya being able to control ice no no no

- i forgot what the issue with kai was but theres probably something wrong with that too with his powers and all that but i forget

season 12

- i think this one is actually really cool i like it

- i forget if there are any issues with this one but

- pls just no lloyd mohawk i cried when i saw that sorry i just cant

season 13

- i love this season too its so cute

- lloyds whole issues with princesses was insanely funny to me id say keep

skipping the island cuz its literally 4 episodes and i quite liked it

season 14

- nya becoming the ocean made me so emotional icl its the closest ive gotten ti crying in ninjago not even zanes death did it for me 😭

- i just wish they couldve focused on kai throughout too instead of just jay cuz yk.. thats his sister???

- and yeah i also wish kai and cole were on board that ship or they couldve done something with them like zane and pixal in season 12

season 15

- i kinda do like where they ended up after nyas death it does seem pretty fitting to have cole bring them all together again

SHSHFEHF this is a really funny prompt for me because I have been DYING thinking of how a Ninjago reboot would go. I DO HAVE THOUGHTS ON THIS!!! I'm gonna punch it under a "read more" cus its a LOT, but if anyone has ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE DONT BE AFRAID TO ASK ME PLEASEEE PLEASE PLEASE!!!

First, the ninja are similar to TLNM in that they all start as ninja, and possibly even all of them are in their teens ! Ofc I would wanna keep my OG series age gap HCs for them all (Lloyd is 12-13, Nya 14, Kai, Jay, and Cole r 16, and Zane like Allegedly 17.) I think if Lloyd started as a ninja, it'd be bcz Garmadon was cursed years ago, and Misako went missing trying to save him, so she left Lloyd with Wu. I don't think the prophecy would still be a thing, but Misako might have a different issue leaving Lloyd w/ Wu. Nya gets her element later than the guys tho, bcz Wu couldn't sense it (it's not a Creation power) and so he Assumed it skipped a generation.

For actual content, I think I'd mix DR events and OG series event like crazy, keep the idea of Source Dragons, but maybe with a twist that they have mortal messengers/champions who the ninja can summon through their weapons, and they can combine like the Golden Ultra Dragon in Crystalized? And also the vehicles are still there OF COURSE!!!

Maybe Garmadon would be working with a mysterious other-realmer (you already know who) in an effort to gain control over the Source Dragon energy of the Golden Weapons? Maybe they wanna recreate the realms, but then this Mysterious other-realmer reveals he works for a secret OTHER guy and betrays Garmadon (this Other guy would prolly be a mix of Thunderfang, the Overlord, and Ras' master, bcz yk, it is Ras.)

I think for basic villain plot stuff, s1 would be Garmadon trapped in a mix btwn the Underworld and the Cursed Realm, and he manages to escape in the end thanks to the power of the weapons and his poopoo-faced general Samukai (he still dies probably,) and I think either in the finale or s2, Ras would find Garmadon and offer him a Special Evil Proposal and Garmadon laughs evilly.

In s2, the Serpentine are freed by a faux tribe of desert exilees, who seek companionship and domination. Maybe they're commanded by Skales, who knows! Maybe he wants to lead his fallen tribe to true glory, and awaken the Devourer, who threatens to devastate Ninjago and all the worlds beyond. I think Wu would still find Garmadon from the Realm of Madness back to Ninjago, but Garmadon would bring with him a Secret friend who doesn't speak much, but who Garmadon insisted MUST come along. I still think Lloyd would be kidnapped, but instead it's because he controls Life Energy, and would be the ultimate key to reviving the comatose Devourer, as the Fangblades have been sapped of their magic. After getting Lloyd back (unfortunately after the ritual has commenced,) Garmadon helps in killing the Devourer, and then he disappears with the Source Weapons, his mysterious pal nowhere to be seen, either.

S3 would follow Ras and Garmadon in the limelight again as villains, trying to control/harness the powers of the Source Weapons, so they can recreate the realms. Little does Garmadon know, Ras is a sneaky little liar with his OWN intent. The plot of this season would probably mirror Legacy of the Green Ninja, Ras and Garmadon hunting around for the Realm Crystal in the fabled Tomb of the FSM. Ras' goal is to bring the Kingdom of Imperium (in the First Realm for the purposes of this story) into Ninjago, whereas Garmadon just wants some power!!! Ras has his way with the Source Weapons and Realm Crystal, and manages to create a gateway that will force Imperium to merge with Ninjago.

For s4, after Ras betrays Garmadon and opens his Special gateway, I think Imperium would make its presence known across the realms as they march on Ninjago, under the guidance of the Empress and the elusive Dragon that commands them.

I'm not really sure where this would lead into, but by s5 Imperium has crumbled, and now the great powerful dragon they've been secretly working under is free and dominating the lands, maybe not for a WHILE maybe only in the final like 3 episodes I GUESS. IDK.

All I know is I would love to see the ninja struggling with Mergequake-ADJACENT issues cus Ras tore open the fabric of the realms w/ unnatural and divine means he wasn't meant to use. I wanna incorporate other villains and seasons into this hypothetical reboot, alas I do not think they would all get major focus, and would Instead be like side villains who show up every now and again.

Help a Family in Need💔

I am reaching out on behalf of my dear friend, Mohamad S., who is facing one of the most challenging times of his life. Mohamad is 37 years old and left his homeland in 2015 in search of a safer and better future. He’s a kind, hardworking man, and his small family has always been his greatest priority.

Living abroad, Mohamad has recently endured unimaginable loss and financial strain. Amidst the ongoing conflict in his homeland, his mother passed away, leaving behind his sister and her five young children—the last remaining members of his immediate family.

As the situation worsened, Mohamad managed to help his sister and her children escape to safety in Egypt, covering their immediate needs and securing a temporary refuge for them. Since then, he has been fully responsible for providing everything they need to survive during this transition.

In his efforts to support his family and cope with this devastating loss, Mohamad has found himself deeply in debt. To make matters even more difficult, he recently underwent knee surgery, which limits his ability to return to work for the foreseeable future. This has made it even harder for him to manage his financial responsibilities and the pressing need to provide his family with a stable future.

Mohamad is now working to bring his sister and her five children to join him in Belgium, where he hopes they can find stability and opportunity after all they’ve endured. This transition, however, requires significant resources that he is currently unable to meet alone.

For privacy reasons, we are not sharing Mohamad’s full name, as he has chosen to keep his identity discreet. While he initially refused the idea of asking for help, I couldn’t stand by and watch him struggle alone. I insisted on doing this for him because he deserves a chance to overcome these challenges.

Your contribution will help Mohamad repay the debt incurred during this difficult time, cover ongoing living expenses for his family, and assist with the costs involved in bringing them safely to Belgium.
