“Located in a 90-year-old building on historic Escolta Street, Fred’s Revolución is the perfect place to take in Art Deco views at sunset—preferably with a beer in hand and sinful bagnet (deep fried pork belly) on the plate,” Ang says.
Check out this Manila travel guide from Forbes! Discover local bars that now add vibrancy to Manila’s nightlife. One of them is Fred’s Revolucion, a community member of the rising Escolta Street in Binondo, Manila, housed in one of the street’s Art Deco landmark.

We strongly agree that the First United Building, one of Escolta’s well-known and preserved building, is an architectural gem!
Its architect and designer, Andres Luna de San Pedro, is the son of the Philippines’ renowned painter Juan Luna. It was the tallest building in Manila when it was completed in 1928. Survived the World War 2 and is still standing beautifully today. A classic icon and reminder of the Manila Chinatown / Old Manila’s glory days.
Besides the First United Building, other gems can be found along the Escolta Street! Check out the other architectural wonders: Regina Building, Calvo Building, Burke Building, and what’s left of the facade of Capitol Theater.

“Preservation is a gesture realized and executed in different manners. Sustaining heritage buildings provides a sense of continuity in this fast changing world for future generations. It sets everything in place, just as how a narrative causes one to remain rather than pass by.”

ESCOLTA BLOCK PARTY X HOP INN: Exhibits
Check out these exhibitions that will be up all day for the Block Party! Let’s support our local artists and their art exhibits within the First United Building, Escolta Street, Manila. See you there!
They wrote poems, we burn them down
One/zero in collaboration with BluPrint present "They wrote poems, we burn them down.” The exhibit aims to spark discussions on how we move forward with our built heritage. It will be on view from 19 May to 18 August 2018 at the One Zero Design Co. office, Room 514, First United Building, 413 Escolta St., Binondo, Manila.
Much has been written about the importance of our heritage buildings, but day after day pieces of our identity are being torn down in different places around Manila. Our cities may be rapidly growing, but at what cost?
The exhibit is a collection of what won’t be there: buildings that once defined a great city, monuments we’ve neglected. It offers a rare look at Juan Nakpil’s attention to detail, and the now defunct PNB Building by Carlos Arguelles.
Photos by Ed Simon.
XI: Thou shall not be ugly
“XI: Thou shall not be ugly”, by John Emmanuel Gutierrez with Jeremy Laureano, talks about a contrast between generations and their beliefs. It speaks of a misconception about beauty and morality. It dreams to give away the freedom to express, discover, and love oneself.
Using fashion as a medium for symbolic art, composed and immortalized through photography, the collection tackles sensitive topics which are undeniably relatable to the artist and his generation.

Derek Tumala FORMATION #1SILVER MYLAR, DICHROIC FILM ON METAL LIGHT BOX
Presented in the 2016 exhibition To Where the Sky Will Lead Us at The Drawing Room Gallery, Philippines and in the ASEAN ART EXHIBITION 2017 Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Seoul, Korea organized by ASEAN-Korea Centre
Derek Tumala works in a sculptural medium that largely uses calculations of light elements through video mapping, prisms and other light fixtures. From Rainbow Gravity theory to Philippine ethnoastronomy, he maps the speculative principles of science with the birth of culture.

LIVE BY DESIGN: LIVING SPACES
The Manila Creative Exchange and one/zero design collective present LIVE BY DESIGN, a series of talks on the intersection of various design disciplines such as architecture, graphic design, publication, fashion, IT, film, TV, music, and crafts.
This time, we focus around the idea of LIVING SPACES and how design uplifts the lives of people. We invited 3 speakers to discuss different aspects of this topic:
BENJEE MENDOZA "WE (Well-being + Environmentalism)"
Benjamin H. Mendoza is a licensed and registered professional Architect and FUAP who has been in practice since the year 2010. He is the Principal Architect for BAAD Studio | Architects which has been developing architectural designs for the past 7 years.
The company which he and his wife & Co-Principal Architect-Annabelle is running, is comprised of a team of a dozen architects handling design projects ranging from residential, commercial, industrial and hospitality.
The company BAADSTUDIO is interested in developing projects that perform highly in their local settings and enhance quality of lives of users while considerately observes sensitivity to the environment.
PANYA BOONSIRITHUM "Citihub"
Panya Boonsirithum is the founder and CEO of Citihub, making quality housing accessible for low-income workers. An offshoot CSR project of Arcya Commercial Group, Citihub's mission is to create dignified housing for the working class in our city.
SUDARSHAN KHADKA "Streetlight Tagpuro"
Sudarshan Khadka was co-curator of Muhon, the Philippines' historic first Pavilion in the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2016. In 2017, he also represented Leandro V. Locsin Partners (LVLP) at the World Architecture Festival in Berlin with the Streetlight Tagpuro, in collaboration with Ericsson Furunes; a community centre in Tacloban that garnered both the Small Projects Prize and the Building of the year for Civic and Community Built Projects category.

The sun is out. The sky is blue. This summer, we celebrate again. We’re inviting you too.
⛱️☁️☀️☀️☀️☁️⛱️
This time around, the local business community — through Escolta Commercial Association Inc. (ECAI) and a little help from Hop Inn Hotel Philippines — present the sixth Escolta Block Party on MAY 19, 2018.
Highlighting the creative energy of the place, the poster presents the challenge of CC to the immediate community to come up with artistic interpretation of the Escolta they have come to love and call home.
(An ongoing project, CC has gone around Escolta gathering illustrations of what this place means to its lovely residents. Check out 100+ drawings done by the community in this Block Party poster!)

“I” aims to humanize queer identity, and address the underrepresentation and dehumanization of the LGBTQ+ community in mass media.
“I feel a lot of the frustration and angst among LGBTQ+ youth stems from a lack of queer representation in mass media,” Marco remarks, “and even when queer identity is considered, we’re too often caricatured and politicized in the process. I wanted to say something about it, and to weigh in on the issue.”
“I” exhibit is up for a month, catch this at the First United Building, Escolta Street, Binondo, Manila! See you!
