On the flip side it’s worth mentioning the people who experience all or some of these and have no idea that what they’re experiencing has a name and can be dealt with. 

The other day I had to explain to someone what dissociation is and I had this moment of total disorientation like… the majority of my fellow human beings have no idea what dissociation, hypervigilance, blunted emotions etc are because they’ve never had a reason to learn. There are people living their lives without all of this bullshit I deal with on a daily basis and I cannot fathom what that must be like, to have that kind of freedom, to have the luxury of not knowing all the ways the human brain can falter when faced with trauma.

Afera wokół wyznania Natalii Przybysz przypomniała mi sytuację po polskiej premierze filmu braci Dardenne “Dwa dni, jedna noc”, kiedy to pojawiło się sporo głosów, że pomysł wyjściowy jest naciągany, no bo niby jak tu się przejąć dramatem bohaterki, która walczy głównie o to, by nie wrócić do mieszkania komunalnego, a nawet, cholera jasna, ma samochód (!). No doprawdy, w dupach się poprzewracało od tego dobrobytu. Tu podobnie - słyszę, że gdyby ciążę przerwała z powodów ekonomicznych kobieta z patologicznej Polski B, nie warszawska celebrytka, być może wówczas łaskawcy zdobyliby się na cień empatii. Bo przecież - pieją moraliści na forach - “JA dorastałem w jednym pokoju z dwojgiem rodzeństwa i byliśmy szczęśliwi”. Argument tego rzędu, co “JA dostawałem w dupę od ojca i żyję” albo “JA wychowałem się na trzepaku, piłem wodę z kałuży, gardzę bezstresowym wychowaniem”. To “JA” jest tu kluczowe. Mam wrażenie, że w tym kraju niemal całkowicie zanikła umiejętność rezygnacji z własnego punktu widzenia i przyjęcia optyki innej osoby. O ile oczywiście kiedykolwiek taka umiejętność się tu wykształciła. I nawiasem dodam jeszcze tylko, że wielokrotnie rozważaliśmy z żoną powiększenie rodziny. Niestety, jak dotąd nie stać nas na trzecie dziecko. Mimo że mieszkamy na stu metrach, nie sześćdziesięciu. Carringtonowie.

The exact same thing happened to me a few days back! It was the most magical moment but when I woke up in the morning it turned out the scent was actually terrible. No hard feelings though

I told this girl I liked the perfume she was wearing, and she legit got it out of her bag and sprayed it on me like ‘here girl smell sexy with me too’. she was so cute I hope she has a good life

I know I run a book blog so maybe this isn’t the right platform for this, but girls: Please look out for other girls. Tonight I was stuck at a bus stop in Shoreditch circa 2 AM and saw another young woman getting harassed by a drunk, aggressive dude, and at first I thought, “She’s got it under control.” But then he started touching her and I went “No, that’s definitely not right.” So I barged over and shoved him out of the way and said, “Beth?? Oh my God, how are you, I haven’t seen you since grade school!” And this girl I’d never seen before in my life threw her arms around my neck and whispered, “You are an angel, thank God.” We talked for fifteen minutes, the creep lost interest, I watched her get on the bus and I will sleep so much better knowing she got home in one piece. If you see something weird happening, intervene. The worst that can happen is embarrassment, and I think that’s worth the risk when you consider the alternative.
