Receptionist: Oh, Maya, I'm so glad we're safe... But, was all this caused by New World Order?... This will be in the history books. In that case, we are "living history"! I'll never forget about this incident... By the way, why is the sky colored like that?

Katsuya: Hah, that is quite a carefree attitude. But that can't be helped. No one really knows about Nyarlathotep. Ulala: The receptionist is a contemporary like Maya, right? She's as carefree as you are. Baofu: No one realizes the shadow in their heart... Or maybe, they just ignore it. Innocent, yet foolish... Tatsuya: ...This is my... I mean, "our" battle. Baofu: He is the negative emotions of all humans. Fighting against him could be like fighting against the entire human race. Heh, heh... Such sarcasm. To think I would get involved with someone like him. Well, I feel no regrets. Katsuya: There are limitations as to what a person can do by themselves... Baofu: If everything goes according to his plan, when did that plan begin? Was my losing her part of that plan too!? Tatsuya: Could it have been... No, the plan must have already started before we were even born... Katsuya: The huge shadow that Kandori was talking about was him...

Baofu: Why do you think humans die? Because they have the power to change. Those who can die are a lot stronger than those who cannot. Katsuya: I looked up to father. I admired his stature, protecting others even at the expense of his own well being. I won't let you die... Not one, not in front of me... EVER... By the name of my father... Ulala: I wonder if I can come back to this room... (giggle)... That's not like me. It's not like I'm going there to die. Tatsuya: This time, I will keep my promise to everyone... And... this time...

Ulala: That Nyar is part of one's heart, huh?... So we're not fighting against a demon, or a monster, but against a human being... When I think of it like that, I feel depressed... Tatsuya: Humans are volatile beings that hold both good and evil. He is testing out whether humans can become more docile beings. Baofu: Good and evil make up humans. Tatsuya: As soon as I saw him... All my reasoning was blown away... I've... never been so angry before. Baofu: It's pathetic, but when I saw him, I didn't feel like I could beat him... Baofu: Humans hold both good and evil... It's a mistake in the first place measuring people by one respect only. Ulala: It was he who changed rumor into reality. Well, he did this to the city. I guess it's easy for him to make rumors reality... Katsuya: If Nyarlathotep didn't exist, Tatsuzou wouldn't have done those things. Now that I think about it, he was pitiful... (basically there are two consequences to answering these shadows poorly: 1) the shadows power up with wrong answers 2) if both shadows power up (pretty sure it needs to be both), the kid here will regain their memory) (and I lied, there's one more consequence. with each kid remembering, Moon Howler/Howler in the Dark powers up too.) (I'm not fully exploring these consequences this time though; we'll save that for another trip through the game)

inside sumaru castle is a room with two statues and many lights on the floor, forming the shape of the big dipper. the statues speak

Statue of Joka: I am Joka... The one who opens the door to Utena... It is suggested to solemnly offer ancient prayers... Statue of Fukugi: I am Fukugi... Prayers are Kotodama, the spirited words... You should gather the 7 Kotodama and offer ancient prayers...

Ulala: This is the "Big Dipper", right? There's one more in between the statues... What's that one? Baofu: There's no door connecting to the back... So those lights lead to somewhere... Katsuya: Prayers? Seven Kotodama...? Are they saying if we don't figure this out, we won't be able to open Utena's door? Tatsuya: A blackhole... That means trouble...

(gosh, where to start? first of all, joka is nuwa in chinese legend; the characters can be read as joka in japanese thus lending the pun here. she's not a goddess of ill-fortune but a progenitor goddess. fukugi is a japanese reading of the characters for fuxi, nuwa's brother (and sometimes husband in some stories) who helped create humanity. so yes, two progenitors of humanity blocking the door to utena (which is probably pedestal or pillar? it's in katakana). the big dipper meanwhile appears to be a big deal in feng shui and in older chinese/japanese beliefs. this site has some interesting and pertinent info. see in particular the 'conducting of a big dipper rite to avoid calamities'...  not sure what tatsuya’s ‘blackhole' comment means in this context though. would have to look at the text in japanese)

(additionally: there is some text written on the floor in here. i can read the characters for north east south west (not the usual ones, these are astrological in this context i believe: 子  卯  午 西）there’s also some text near the warps but it’s too blurry. it’s probably the formal names of the stars. i’ll check this later sometime, perhaps, on the off-chance i can match any. south is by the statues, at the ‘top’ of the room. i recall that south is auspicious as a direction...)

He was a heroic figure. It IS a bit odd for them to use a Western name, but people today have strange ideas of magic. Another effect of rumors, I guess. Ulala: Wow, you're such a hardworking guy. So what's a "henbai"? Katsuya: Henbai is a type of "magical stepping" that originated in China. With this, you crush evil stars and invite good luck. Hokutoku is a magic where you draw Ursa Major on the earth to sanctify and protect that area... Most likely, it means to walk in a certain pattern, or something like that...

(little bit of a localization change, probably because it would be a nightmare to have this one fit coding-wise? the password is sonjouou in japanese (尊星王) which is another name for the deification of the pole star; another being myouken. see again here. it's not a bad substitution since you can jump from ursa major/big dipper asterism, to the pole star, and then use cassiopeia (roughly right across from big dipper) to locate perseus which is at an angle from the big dipper. it's not perfect but it's ALMOST pointing at perseus. text in japanese seems similar; note to self: give it a shot sometime if curious enough about the content. by the way gohou is 護法 which is a little hard to translate snappily, it means basically (given the context) 'god/being who protects buddhist (or religious) doctrine')

Chamber of Utena

tatsuzou turns into a monster, detested hunter (this should be Hunting Horror; can't blame them for missing this one though (it's 忌まわしき狩人 in japanese). good job, tatsuzou. i wonder what sugawara was turned into?)

talking to hunter: UOOOOOOOOONNNN... GRGRGRGRGRGRGR...

once defeated, though, the earth dragon and joka still aren't dissipating -- which means that what's causing this isn't done with -- baofu asks if the cause is 'him' one by one the bodies of the nwo elite are consumed and drawn into gozen, which transforms into a monster tatusya says that 'he' won't appear until this enemy is defeated (paraphrased. this is also noted in the additional scenario -- nyarlathotep wants people to run through as many obstacles as possible before showing himself)

once defeated gozen vanishes in an explosion of light; the pillar reaches into the heavens where a huge red storm surrounds the city and dissolves the workings of the torifune around sumaru. towards the center is some sort of twisted room, but a cube filled with red lines now surrounds it and the city the party is in a strange place

Baofu: Come to think of it, our enemy is the same but the reasons why are all different. What a motley crew we are... Katsuya: After sending all these people to die, how dare he try creating a "Kegare-free world"... Tatsuzou Sudou... you are despicable! Ulala: What exactly do they do for the ritual? Is it a ceremony kind of thing? Ohh... I'm getting a bad feeling... Tatsuya: The dragons and the Ritual were actually just setting the stage... It's the hearts of everyone that destroys the world.

Demon Artist: Good and bad are just inconstant... It's very cocky to label your own ideas as justice. After all, people have their hands full with just following their own beliefs. Torifune

Rooms in Torifune: Room of Insult Room of Damnation Room of Guilt Room of Transport Control Room

In the Room of Insult, there are dead bodies all over -- Tenchu Army soldiers as Katsuya comments. caught in a trap it seems. ulala wonders if this is the work of 'nyar-something' and thinks it's weird that he'd kill his own men tatsuya says it's proof that the NWO isn't aware of the secret of the torifune (that it makes thoughts real) 'he thinks of humans as mere pawns' -- the humans probably aren't even aware of nyarlathotep

Tatsuya: This ship... him... Neither one is anything a human should mess with... Ulala: It's not like I'm playing the hero, but... A lot of people died... Even I would think that would be enough! Grandma said if I wanted to help people, I had to do it without thinking of the consequences... Now I finally understand! Katsuya: Tatsuya said that this is part of the unconscious world... Our hearts are created by multiple layers... Normally, our ego is viewed as the "self", with our unconsciousness lying beneath. Below this, each society has one culture, family, etc... the "Collective Unconsciousness". These abysses spread out infinitely... Think of the normal unconscious as a sea of unconsciousness all humans share... The tiny island floating in that sea... that's "ego". If it is the people's rumors that created this ship, then you can call this Sumaru society's "unconsciousness"... Baofu: I don't care about the Crawling Chaos, but I'm not letting them get away... I'm gonna be the one to kill Tatsuzou...

In the Room of Damnation, Ulala collapses. she says she can't go on after walking so long, and after some discussion (including 'if only there was a velvet room') tatsuya notices that there is in fact a fountain and a velvet room right here 'it's awfully suspicious... that nyarlathotep guy decides whether or not to make our thoughts a reality' 'i don't know what he's up to, but if i can use it, then i will...' (baofu decides to take a break anyway) with that baofu and ulala head one way through a door and katsuya the other; tatsuya and maya are alone a long moment of silence passes

the doors to the velvet room open -- but it's golden versions of jun, lisa, and eikichi tatsuya is shocked; they accuse him of abandoning them for maya 'these are the illusions that my heart called' he attacks to no avail one by one they vanish, and take tatsuya with them, after which the rest of the party returns

Ulala: Oh, come on Ma-ya! What were you doing!! ...Wait... I'm the one mostly at fault... Baofu: They pulled a dirty trick on us... I like his style... Too bad it won't do him any good... Katsuya: Damn... Tatsuya's letting his pride get in the way. He's trying to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders...!

After continuing a distance, resonance occurs: Katsuya: Tatsuya's still alive... We must hurry...

Inside the Room of Guilt, Tatsuya is on a sacrificial altar at what looks like araya. (the pair here repeat their lines from the end of IS. also, the guide says that if you carry over data from IS the conversation here (or perhaps earlier, it just says 'torifune') changes based on who you picked in taurus. doesn't say how it changes though.) jun's got a knife and offers to end tatsuya's suffering but he catches the knife with his hand party arrives after, and a fight ensues

afterwards, katsuya is evidently taking care of tatsuya's injury (baofu is literally sitting on the altar the entire time and smoking btw. the scene is back to the normal torifune) Katsuya: I thought I taught you to hold a knife by its handle... Tatsuya: I'm sorry... Katsuya: Don't say anything. My brother doesn't lower his head for little things like this... Tatsuya: No... The me of "This Side", also feels the same way... Katsuya: I see... katsuya stands and turns away to cry Ulala: How can you two be brothers?

Tatsuya: I'm sorry Maya... I troubled you... Katsuya: How come I didn't realize it earlier...? About "This Side"... About the "Other Side"... How stupid of me... Ulala: I'm an only child so I don't know, but, it must be great having a sibling... Katsuya told me that the little Tatsuya became a delinquent after the incident with his dad... Maybe he was his role model... Katsuya became a cop to do something about it. Knowing his brother's ways, he could not talk about clearing his dad's name... Baofu: Don't go trying to stop him... At that age, risking his life to carry this worthless world on his shoulders... Let him do it the way he wants to do it. If he fails, then hold him... Leave it at that...

In the Room of Transport: Katsuya: Tatsuya... What is this? Tatsuya: I think it's some sort of teleportation device... It was another symbol in the "Other Side"... Ulala: It's called... "Petite Deva". It's written here. Baofu: The symbol of Kandori... If we use this, we might be able to get back to the city.

Tatsuya: This seems to be a designated coordinates model, so I set it to Araya Shrine... You should be able to get back here, too... Baofu: I'll leave it up to you, but do we have the time to be leisurely?... Let's finish this quickly. Ulala: Since we can get back here, why don't we go back to the city? I'm getting hungry... Katsuya: Tatsuya is really skillful with his hands. My real brother wasn't... There's no point to that discrimination... They're both my little brother...

Out at the shrine:

Old Woman: My, oh my... I thought a god would come out, but instead it's a human... But you have a nice face... A goddess might have a face like yours...

Baofu: I don't know what to say about this shrine.. Well, it can't be helped since it's his connection to fate. Tatsuya: We all met each other... Here at this shrine on the Other Side... It's already... been 10 years, but... To me... it's my irreplaceable everything... Ulala: I was gonna pray, but I stopped. I can't keep relying on fortunes or false idols forever... Katsuya: Ms. Amano, finish preparing quickly. We've wasted a lot of time...

Baofu: It seems I was collecting rumors over there too. Not very different from here... At one time, I was kinda curious about an alternate world... But it's actually pretty boring. Ulala: I was tricked by time on the "Other Side" after all... Huh... Just like Ma-ya's flashback...

Johnny Roger's:

Tatsuya: The Fountain of Recovery... Velvet Room... And the Teleportation Device. Everything's exactly the same as the Xibalba.

Peace Diner:

Katsuya: As always, eh... The reason I became a policeman was for one purpose... The "me" on the "Other Side" must be the same way... Baofu: I always thought maybe in another world... But it seems even on the "Other Side", I'm still a helpless fool. Ulala: I was tricked by Makimura even on the "Other Side"... I really suck at falling for the wrong men...

Toa Armory:

Katsuya: You cannot judge people by appearance. That is so true... being friendly and being caring are two different things. Ulala: I can't believe the shop owner said that! I feel awakened to the truth. Baofu: What's up with the shop owner? I didn't think he had a heart. I think more highly of him now. Tatsuya: We're being supported by all sorts of people. That shop owner's words really made me feel that.

Whistle Shopkeeper: It's dangerous outside... You should get some armor...

Kasugayama:

Katsuya: The "Other Side" has nothing to do with me. To me, Ms. Amano is the Ms. Amano of "This Side", and nothing else. Ulala: I never knew you had such a past... Hmm? It's not the past. It's the... past from the "Other Side"? Tatsuya: If you were to assume what we saw there is on the same axis of time, it is all in the past... Before the "Grand Cross". Baofu: (sigh)... Ulala is really an idiot. You don't try to speak about that with a sense of urgency... (another line that doesn't quite make sense in english?)

(this seems to be it for changes; back to Torifune and the plot)

Inside the control room, it's just carnage. dead soldiers are everywhere. katsuya calls out that one soldier still has a pulse turns out the general (sugawara) turned into a monster and killed everyone. the soldier asks that we tell his daughter to 'grab her dream' before passing on

something screams 'i..... TAAAAIeeee...' (it's basically the same ('IeeeTAAAAIeeee~!!') in Japanese; in roman characters even (and it's 'it hurts'))

a hideous monster approaches and the torifune lights up. a tower arises in rengedai as the city forcefully rises into the air, destroying much of the surrounding space it looks bad but the ritual hasn't been completed, as tatsuya says; there's still time. and a fight against the creature ensues.

it's knocked down into torifune in the end 'i don't care if you're immortal or not... you lose...' (katsuya throws out a one-liner)

looks like we can't land the ship, baofu says the controls aren't budging ulala's not sure what we can do, katsuya reiterates what tatsuya said before something's up with the teleporter though so we're getting out before we get stuck

katsuya asks what's so special about this place; tatsuya is silent maya suddenly reacts to something and falls to her knees -- ulala rushes over to her maya remembers a shrine in flames, and her younger self screaming for tatsuya to run as a strange (it's tatsuya sudou) young man laughs maniacally, but tatsuya summons his persona then and the memory cuts out

maya explains this to the others, and katsuya protests this can't have happened -- this shrine has never been set on fire (that's almost verbatim what he says too) and he used to bring tatsuya here often as a kid 'in this world anyway'

Nichirinmaru and Undersea Ruins

for the next step we go to narumi and finally go to the yacht harbor nichirinmaru is 10 km off the coast of sumaru bay 'looks like a cruise ship but the inside has been modified greatly'

maya wants to drive ulala says no way in hell baofu says he's doing it and that's the end of it

the next cutscene takes us to nichirinmaru's submarine dock  chizuru is meeting with kandori, who is down here; he asks about the 'old folks' (the other NWO guys) chizuru says they want the seal removed immediately chizuru then asks kandori why he's not calling the shots and why he's letting tatsuzou order him around he asks if she despises tatsuzou because she's a woman she's silent then asks kandori to kill the others and become the leader; kandori just says it doesn't matter to him chizuru comments that he seems to only be concerned about 'them' and the paradox boy; she asks why he's so obsessed with them he's silent, then says 'you underestimate me' shortly before the whole thing shakes 'the paradox... all the players are in place... let's go' and they're off, in a sub

nichirinmaru is really really big, this is an ocean liner/cruise ship; also it's partly on fire now because of tatsuya (assumedly)

the party gets on board and there's a lot of bodies; a short firefight with some of the soldiers ensues the ship is still shaking baofu: looks like your little brother is raising some hell... katsuya: he doesn't look it, but he's quite violent... once he's enraged, there's no stopping him. ulala wonders what we're doing and baofu says we should move.

Ellen: Hmm... It looked like a lovely cruise ship when I saw it from the port... But the inside is quite disappointing. Ulala: That Tatsuya is unbelievable. He came all the way here by himself... Baofu: You saw a submarine go down before, right? There was another one just like it... I don't know if Tatsuzou's on it, but that's the only way to go after him... Katsuya: Tatsuya... what makes you this way? Why won't you tell me what's going on...? Am I that lousy of a brother...?

Ellen has a bit of new dialogue in the velvet room: This reminds me of how I used to be. I've become an adult, but there's still a part of me that hasn't changed since then...

In the conference room (this is the room seen at the start of the game and in some of the cutscenes) a map is projected on the floor. Katsuya: This looks like a map of the ocean floor... Baofu: Hmmm... Where are the Undersea Ruins? Katsuya: Right around where Ms. Amano is standing. Baofu: No time to waste... Let's move.

Ellen: That mark on the floor... It looks like some sort of symbol used in sorcery... It could be an ancient seal... Baofu: Looks like they were plotting something evil here... You just wait... Tatsuzou... Katsuya: That shrine-like thing... Don't you think there is something about it? Who was inside it...? Ulala: Ma-ya, remember that party? It was on a cruise ship just like this... A ship is a ship, but I never thought I would have to go on a ship like this...

out on the heliport, a helicopter touches down tatsuya is fighting some of the tenchu soldiers he calls out to tatsuzou Tatsuya: Tatsuzou! What you believe is wrong! Don't be manipulated by him! Tatsuzou: You fool... This world of sins and no ideals is false. Therefore, it must be punished. Tatsuya: You're wrong... I'm the only one who must be punished...

the party (literally) leaps in after this Tatsuzou: Such a pity... a great pity. In today's world, how many young people are there with your sense of purpose... Come join me. Together, we can create a world without man's original sin. Baofu: Fool! You don't know what you're talking about, old man! Ellen: Is he serious...? Ulala: Don't be ridiculous! Who's gonna humor an old man's delusions! Katsuya: Your crime is a serious one... Are you aware of the penalty? Punishment by death or life imprisonment! Tatsuzou: Is that so...? How unfortunate.

he turns to leave, and the x-1s move to engage. katsuya yells at him to wait tatsuya says he'll take one of the machines as baofu rushes in, already summoning his persona

afterwards, tatsuya appears to be hurt (katsuya comments as much) and tries to sneak off and all he says to maya is 'why did you come...!?' 'what do you mean why' which results in 'leave me alone! i can do this myself!' and he runs off before we can get a word in edgewise

Katsuya: I'm sorry, Ms. Amano... He's not really like that... Please forgive him... Baofu: The kid pushed himself too hard... Tatsuzou escaped, but we can't just let those guys heading towards the ruins go... Amano, let's look for a way to go after them. Ellen: It must be hard for him... I think the only one who can save his heart is you, Ms. Amano. Ulala: I've never seen Tatsuya so angry...

down in the docks, there's still one sub left good timing since it seems that tatsuzou's decided to sink the ship (with us in it) tatsuya, in one of the x-series machines, tells us to get out of here Katsuya: Is that you, Tatsuya!?... You only have a learner's permit! You can't drive that thing, it's dangerous! tatsuya leaves, everyone else but baofu has already gotten on the sub Baofu: Idiot! What are you babbling about!... Get your ass over here!! Katsuya: Who are you calling an idiot!? the ship shakes and he gets on board as well and we're off

down at the ruins there are a lot of ruined submarines

Baofu: He must have done this. What a punk... And to top it off, he's smart as well... He's destroyed their only way out. He's got some mad skills... Katsuya: No one's here now... Tatsuya must have gone inside... Ellen: I remember... this feeling... Mr. Kandori... he's here... Ulala: Say... did these ruins appear because of rumors too... or has it been here?... I don't know what's real or not anymore.

chizuru calls dragons a huge energy flowing underground. 'now, by releasing the Kegare with the dragon, this world will be obliterated' gozen and tatsuzou are headed towards torifune

Kandori: I'd like to tell you to chase them, but... I'm just a peon... I can't just let you return. Please honor me by being my opponents. chizuru intercedes, and kandori asks 'the paradox' to be his opponent instead

afterwards

Kandori: Magnificent... but... It is not easy for one embraced by the shadows to escape from its grasp... Can you break the chains of fate? Tatsuya: That's why I came... I'll never let that sadness happen again...

also the ruins are coming down around us

ellen says kandori should come with them; in response he opens fire on her 'don't humiliate me with your sympathy' everyone leaves; ellen turns to go but hesitates a moment before also leaving

chizuru gets up and leans against kandori Chizuru: You wanted to hear the words... from the boy? Kandori: I regret leading you to this end... Chizuru: No... I was happy just to be with you...

back in port tatsuya attempts to walk off but katsuya calls out to him first tatsuya tries to brush off his brother's attempts at finding out what's going on baofu interjects though 'hey... do you know that your brother is saving money from his paycheck for you?' katsuya panics a bit about this, apparently embarrassed apparently baofu had nate do some research on katsuya as a bit of turnabout is fair play

baofu brings up maya having gone through a lot, including ulala getting her marked for death by the joker 'haven't you done enough all yourself...?'

Tatsuya: I'm not... your little brother... Katsuya: What the hell do you mean!?... You are my brother!! No matter what!! (ulala has to sort of... get in his way here) Ulala: Easy there, big guy...
