Galadriel seems as such a complex character, and Celeborn is too undimensional and simple for my taste. That is why I decided to give her a more worthy partner, someone to match both her power and intelligence, someone as old as her, as wise as her. And, best of all, what any girls dreams of: a tall, dark stranger.

As a female athlete myself, I just want to quickly appreciate how George R.R Martin writes his women who fight. It’s never, “she wanted to be a warrior so she worked harder than everyone and eventually she could beat all the boys.” He actually gives his characters strengths and weaknesses—as well as cultural ties to fighting— and he makes these traits enhance the already existing plot lines these characters follow. The mental game is also always just as important, if not more, than the physical game, which I’ve found is true in sports and probably much more true in actual life-threatening situations.

Arya is a small child. She’s nine, she’s skinny; she would probably never excel at being a knight, so instead she learns a different type of fighting. She’ll never overpower anyone, but she can be quick and sneaky and use her left hand which most people don’t know how to fight against. Also, I would argue that Syrio’s teachings about “looking with your eyes” were far more important to her than the physical part of water dancing. Most of the time she isn’t using her skills to directly fight people, but to run away, to spy on people, to catch food and survive. Syrio is her friend, Needle is Jon Snow’s smile, etc. Arya learning how to use her stature to her advantage is part of a greater connection to her identity and the people who helped her.

Brienne is stronger than most men, but she faces constant misogyny because of that (which is all too realistic). She constantly faces internal battles with her own self-image and harassment wherever she goes. She gets taught to use men’s pride and anger to her advantage:

“Old Ser Goodwin was long in his grave, yet she could hear him whispering in her ear. Men will always underestimate you, he said, and their pride will make them want to vanquish you quickly, lest it be said that a woman tried them sorely. Let them spend their strength in furious attacks, whilst you conserve your own. Wait and watch, girl, wait and watch (AFFC Brienne 7)”

Finally, “no chance, and no choice” is her most memorable line for a reason. It’s not her martial prowess that makes her a great character; it’s her bravery and honor.

Cultural ties are also so important to the reasons many women in the series fight. Asha is Balon’s last remaining child when all her brothers are dead and gone. Of course she knows how to fight and sail. Her tension with Theon is less about her showing off and more about her proving how much she actually knows her people while he doesn’t (of course that isn’t Theon’s fault but that’s a whole other post). The Mormont women learned to fight because they historically had to fight off invaders; the Sand snakes’ skills show their connection to Oberyn, etc.

Anyway I just love how George uses fighting to enhance his characters’ personalities and not define them. None of them are physically or mentally infallible, and none are exempt from misogyny. They just learned to do something that empowers and protects them despite society’s expectations. George’s writing of women is definitely not perfect, but this is something I really appreciate.

cannot believe i have to make this a point in the good year of 2024 but no i don’t think saurondriel represents affectionate, pure love. i think it’s toxic and all consuming and depraved and obsession and lust and hatred and baring the deepest parts of themselves to each other and yearning and lodged into their heart through sheer intensity

thinking about how the bear pit is rlly an amalgamation of brienne’s insecurities and fears - everyone laughing at her (the whole spectacle), making a mockery of her gender and appearance (the pink dress), making a mockery of her physical prowess (wooden sword) then jaime coming down there to protect her and take her away from all of that. that whole ordeal beinh so significant that in her nightmares she’s hoping and calling for jaime to save her and her away, and the fact that she even remembers the sound of jaime’s boots hitting the sand when he jumped down the pit for her im so ill

thinking about how their bond transcends time, space, and destiny—soulmates tethered to each other. except they’re also walking two different paths that cannot overlap, always standing on opposite sides. but she still craves him, because he made her feel so deeply the way she hasn’t felt in centuries. the love she feels for him isn’t just tainted by the knowledge of his true identity; it’s torn apart by the fact that, even now, she still sees halbrand within him and she can only live in constant denial. maybe he sees the darkness lying dormant within her, the unspoken desires she barely acknowledges herself—and it terrifies her that he, of all people, is the one who understands them

and then he’s this fucked up lunatic. meets her when he’s been stripped of everything. he’s so drawn to her and it’s suddenly a romcom filled with crazy sexual tension she is the one person who could have pulled him from the shadows, the reflection of what he might have been in another life—someone who drew him toward the light. but that is still never quite enough to make him leave the darkness behind

she forever chooses good. he is entrenched in his depravity. and yet they both live haunted by this choice of never experiencing again what they felt in those few moments when he was just halbrand and she was just galadriel. just them on the raft. this ‘love’ festers like a wound that will never heal, reminding them of what could have been but never will be

now every time they face each other they’re faced with feelings that neither of them expected to develop and it’s a sore point for both and they can’t erase that intimacy and they’re both frustrated because why not

& for him it has turned into if you can’t have me in your heart the way i desire then i will have you in the only twisted way i know how to which. wow. woah.

i don't understand why it's even a question whether sauron was reaching for galadriel or nenya.

i think it's obvious that sauron's desire to possess nenya is a metaphor for his desire to have galadriel. nenya = galadriel.

if nenya just represented a ring and all sauron wanted was that ring, he would have snatched that thing away from galadriel the moment he saw it, and he had many opportunities to take it away. he wanted galadriel to give him nenya herself, bc that meant her giving in to him as well.

he was so desperate and teary while asking galadriel to give him nenya after stabbing her bc he hurt her far worse than he wanted to, trying to bring her to the point where she would give in, but she kept resisting and i believe he just didn't want to keep on hurting her. yet he would continue until she willingly gave him what he wanted. that is why he was so relieved and the most overjoyed we have seen him when he thought she finally believed he wanted to heal the middle-earth (+her) and was about to give him nenya (=herself).

the whole thing was so obviously a psychological game sprinkled with morgoth tactics sauron played on galadriel in a desperate hope of breaking her defenses down till she willingly gave herself to him.

and he changed the position of his hand to reach for her wrist, that way he would have been able to pull her back. if he had just reached for the ring, he would have tried to reach from below of her hand (where his hand was already positioned) to open her palm and quickly snatch the ring.

like i know of casual viewers who frankly speaking don’t know and care for the lore but they’re watching the show regardless (because it’s a piece of media put out for them to consume without needing to pass some test) and they’re all joking about the messy divorce of two immortals who are still in love anyway so where do we go from here
