I’ve been trying to articulate what types of romance in media I do or don’t like as an aroace person but it’s hard! every rule I think of seems to have exceptions

I think the closest I have is I prefer romances built on bonds rather than on vague feelings of “attraction” that are intangible to me personally. not necessarily slow-burn but focused on their relations as people rather than romantic intent. idk if that makes sense to allosexual/romantic people but it sits right with me

fellow asexuals and people questioning asexuality, reminder to not gatekeep your identity! the ace-spectrum is so vast and broad that you shouldn't invalidate yourself for having a sense of sexuality or sexual interest.

if you're ace and get sexual attraction but no urge to act on it, you are valid!

if you're ace and get sexual pleasure but not sexual attraction, totally chill!

if you're ace but develop sexual interest after getting to know someone deeply, awesome!

if you're ace but inexplicably have sexuality some days but not others, you are valid!

there are so many different ways to be ace and none of them are wrong. your asexuality is defined by YOU, not by tiktok discourse accounts or wiki pages. it's no ones place to tell you that you aren't valid for finding happiness within a label!

There’s this really tricky thing that happens when it comes to ace representation in very specific cases where the character that is ace-coded or presumed to be ace is non-human. Like, from the top of my head in doctor who when people talk about interpreting the Doctor as ace, something I’ve come across many times is “well, they must be ace because they’re alien” as if being ace is somehow an inherently non-human trait. As well saying that they do not have the typical “human urges” while the fact remains that I myself am human, I am ace and I DO NOT have those urges, and neither do many many people out there. These are the kind of tiny seemingly harmless mistakes that accidentally contribute to seeing aspec people as non-human or lacking a fundamental human trait
