A Brief On Medicinal Background & Production Of Cordyceps
Cordyceps Sinensis have a long history as medicinal fungus.
Several species of Cordyceps are considered as medicinal mushrooms in classical Asian pharmacologies such as the Traditional Far-Eastern Medicines.
There are over 600 documented species of Cordyceps, and the best known of these is a fungus which is known in Tibet as "winter worm, summer grass", colloquially named as “Caterpillar fungus” or “Yartsa Gunbu”.
The earliest record outlining the medicinal properties of Ophiocordyceps Sinensis (Cordyceps Sinensis) is in the 15th Century from the Traditional Far-Eastern Medicine Journal.
In Chinese medicine literature it is regarded as fungus improving an excellent balance of “yin and yang”.
The fungus gained international exposure in 1993 due to the performance of three female Chinese athletes who broke five world records at the Olympics. The coach told the reporters that the runners were taking Ophiocordyceps Sinensis (Cordyceps Sinensis) at his request.
Exclusively found on the Tibetan Plateau and in the Himalayas (India, Nepal and Bhutan), Ophiocordyceps Sinensis germinates in living host, kills and mummifies the larva and then the fungus grows from the body of host.
Every year, the search for Cordyceps begin in the month of May-June at an altitude of 3000 meters to 6000 meters and the entire search operation lasts for approximately 5 weeks. Often, the entire village population is involved in the collection process.
Now, the demand for Cordyceps is the highest in Asian countries and there is continuous increase in demand from the Western world.  For local folks, Cordyceps Sinensis has become the most important source of money.

Sportsmen, Athletes, Fitness Enthusiast Check Out What This Study By Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine Says About Cordyceps Sinensis, The Rear Himalayan Mushroom
Cordyceps Sinensis is an extremely rear to find naturally formed mushroom which can be easily classified as a super-food. This all natural super supplement with potentially high medicinal properties has been popular in the Far-Eastern region for centuries. Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, also know as J Altern Compliment Med conducted a study on the effects of Cordyceps Sinensis on Exercise Performance by adult individuals. Below is the abstract of the final study report in brief and detailed report is linked at the end of this post.
Objective
The objective of this study was to examine the effect of Cordyceps Sinensis on exercise performance in healthy elderly subjects.
Design
20 healthy elderly (age 50–75 years) Male & Female subjects were enrolled in this double-blind, controlled, prospective trial. The subjects were divided in 2 groups with each group taking either Cordyceps Sinensis or placebo capsules 3 times a day for 12 weeks.
Measurement
Subjects received baseline screening including physical examination and laboratory tests. Maximal incremental exercise testing was performed on a stationary cycle ergo-meter using breath-by-breath analysis at baseline and at the completion of the study.
Results
After receiving Cordyceps Sinensis for 12 weeks, the metabolic threshold increased by 10.5% and the ventilatory threshold increased by 8.5%.
While on the other hand, the group of subjects who were given placebo for 12 weeks, did not display any significant metabolic or ventilatory changes.
Conclusion
This pilot study suggests that supplementation with Cordyceps Sinensis improves exercise performance and contributes to wellness in healthy older subjects.
