Salsa Dancing is my Asia Replacement this Year
Salsa classes are easy to find. I just typed in Salsa classes Manchester (link) to find listings for classes in my region. Easy! There are probably similar websites to be found on Google for most places.
The music is exotic- I have been a fan of all the Buena Visa Club artists for many years, plus various other forms of Latin music. Below is a photo of just a few of my favourites including some of the individual Buena Vista Social Club stars CDs. Which are a mix of Cuban salsa and more jazzy off-shoots for their individual talents. Plus I sneaked in my favourite flamenco CD.

Salsa dancing is very easy to learn. Below I have tried to make it a little less intimidating (I was intimidated a little at first) by embedding a beginners salsa dancing video from Youtube. It all starts with a series of simple steps and evolves from that foundation.
I find that going to salsa classes gives me that exotic element which Asian travel used to give me. I plan on visiting exotic Bali next year, but for now I think salsa will tide me over through the cold British winter. I have avoided winters in Manchester for many years so I am not looking forward to a full grey, wet and windy Manchester winter this year, but salsa music, dancing and the occasional mojito cocktail is probably a good alternative.

Other than dancing I have been hunting for the best Asian food in Manchester. My favourite Asian restaurant in Manchester is Tampopo which has 3 locations (2 in the city and one in the Trafford Centre. The newest one at the Corn Exchange is my favorite. All the food is great. The Beef Rendang starter is delicious and the fairly plain steak Ramen is a good choice for main.
Other than that I love to visit both Rusholme (Indian cuisine) and China Town for superb oriental food. The Manchester Evening News newspaper recommended This N That Indian cafe last week so we gave it a try. The food was delicious and really cheap. You get rice and then choose from 3 dishes for up to £6. Great for lunch on the edge of the Northern Quarter. Here is what we had below:

UK Summer Has Been Nice to Me
I am halfway through a visit back to the UK and it has been great. My main concern is the grey, wet, cold weather. It has been a really nice temperature. So far I have caught up with my favorite people and food.
Food wise I have been eating lots of stodgy British food like “chippies”, pies, mushy peas, bacon butties and pork pies with Colemans mustard and Branston Pickle. Delicious but rather fattening. I have still to get a doner kebab lol
Also the weather has been so nice that I have managed to get out. Highlight so far has been Tatton Park in Cheshire, with the mansion garden photoed below. We also went to the Bakewell county fair in Derbyshire. Next up is north Wales next week to a tiny village which escape my memory, the photos look very quaint.
Then we will probably take a trip down to London to catch a show. Then we want to try out a friend’s new Filipino restaurant in London which looks awesome. They are putting contemporary touches on Philippines dishes, some of which I miss from my days there.
Anyway enjoy the photo below from Tatton Park. I will certainly be taking lots when we visit Wales this week too. I am paying my way (at the parents) by cleaning the driveway. I have borrowed a pressure washer and bought a driveway sealer. I cleaned the driveway yesterday and need to leave it a day or two before applying the sealer to keep it clean for years to come.

Back in the UK for a while
So I have had to go back home to the Midlands in the UK for a while. My long time girlfriend has always had visa issues getting into the UK i.e. we need to go back to her home country every time. As I proposed almost 18 months ago, I figured both reasons would be a good excuse for us to go back home for a medium length holiday (I can’t take the weather for too long).
The holiday has had it’s ups and downs, the wedding planning has been a real pain but we luckily got help from a friend of a friend who is like one of the leading wedding planners in Dubai. We got a friend price for some amazing details and it has really taken the pressure off. We were a bit lost and not flush with cash so it has worked out perfectly, we gave her our budget and requests and she planned it all- awesome! The photo is one she helped with for friends on a cliff in Portugal, it was an amazing wedding.
My elderly half aunt has had to be put in a care home whilst I was there. I wanted to see here and was happy that she seems to be in great hands. My Mum and her two sisters assure me they found the best care homes in Stoke on Trent group. I have to say I believe them. The place was good and even though Aunt June is not doing so well, I think she is in the best possible hands. My fiancee (we get married next Saturday), would like to live in the UK one day and being a caregiver in a nursing home is something she would like to do. We asked a friend about it (his Dad has a nursing home) and he said she would just need to brush up on her English a bit. She has had plenty of experience looking after her Mum for over 6 months before she died, then later her Dad. So we drove up to Manchester to look for a school. We settled on a really nice English School in Manchester called Communicate, which we are almost certain to use in future. I am not really savoring the thought of moving back to the UK but the old folks want it as does my fiancé. I guess I will just have to bite the bullet at some point. Anyway for now I will just be happy to chill out with old friends, enjoy the wedding day and then escape.

They love the world class shopping. They also enjoy the excellent infrastructure in teh expat district where you can find a plethora of fantastic restaurants and bars. The beach is beautiful with whiter sand than I have seen elsewhere in South East Asia. The island is quickly growing up into a premier tourism spot, with excellent hotel and facilities popping up every other week. Robbie from Bella Isa Spa Boracay

Discovery Bay in Hong Kong
Discovery Bay was originally intended as a tourism hot spot. There are 2 bays and properties almost all have great views out onto the water. The small community is now home to expats from over 30 countries. Apparently the developers changed their mind about the area just before work started because of a lack of funds to pay for the expensive tourist infrastructure needed. These days Discovery Bay is a thriving residential community with the amenities of a holiday hotspot. It lies just 2 miles away from Hong Kong's Disneyland and the beach is enjoyed by all. It is just a short drive away from the international airport too which makes it a great location for those traveling throughout the region. Despite the shortage of funds when the community was developed, the infrastructure is excellent with the high level of service that is expected from expats living in Hong Kong. It is one of the few places to allow pets too. The Discovery Bay magazine Around DB is provided free and gives a listing of schools, business and properties in the area. The region is thought to have around 18,000 residents as of early 2013. There is said to be a strong sense of community with an excellent standard of living. Discovery Bay image courtesy of Wikipedia

Self Catering Holidays in the UK
If you can't afford the time or money for a long haul flight to the Far East, self catering holidays in the UK are proving incredibly popular nowadays. This might be to do with a variety of reasons, such as the ever increasing cost of travelling abroad, or the relatively poor exchange rate from the pound to the euro. Perhaps though, it is more to do with the fact that people from the UK are finally waking up and seeing what a wealth of things there are to see and do in their own country.
Self catering holidays can be taken in any part of the UK, from the beautiful coastal areas of Devon and Cornwall, to the remote Scottish highlands. Each area of the UK has something unique to offer the holidaymaker, and the countries that make up the United Kingdom each have their own character and individuality.
Anyone thinking of taking a holiday in England, for example, has any number of possible holiday options to choose from. It might be a week in London, seeing the main attractions such as Buckingham Palace and Big Ben, or it might be a week spent in the Lake District enjoying the great outdoors and trying out some hikes. Holiday rental cottages are available throughout England, enabling people to stay in a home away from home during their vacation.
Wales is another popular part of the UK for people taking self catering holidays. Its many attractions include magnificent castles such as the one found in Cardiff, art galleries, museums and nature trails. Anyone seeking to take part in leisure activities will also be pleased by what is available, and it is possible to try abseiling, fishing and climbing amongst many other sports.
Millions of people each year also take a holiday in Scotland. The allure of the highlands, the stunning lochs, and the wonderful city of Edinburgh are all attractions in a country which has some of the best holiday rental cottages available. Northern Ireland is the final country that makes up the United Kingdom. With pretty countryside, quaint villages and friendly people, it is a destination for those that would like to escape the hustle and bustle of big city life.
The advantages of taking a self catering holiday over staying in a hotel are many. The primary one of these, is that as the properties come with a kitchen, the costs involved with eating out for every meal are instantly reduced. This is particularly noticeable when taking a holiday with a family. Even just preparing one meal a day for the family could save over fifty pounds a day! One of the other great advantages, is that a rental cottage or house simply feels more homely than a hotel ever will.
If you are thinking of staying in a holiday rental cottage or other property for your next vacation, you may find that visiting www.uniqueholidaycottages.co.uk at Holiday Cottages Listings will be useful. There are a selection of some of the best holiday properties to rent in the UK, combined with more information about what each region has to offer the holidaymaker.
