Hello, thank you for asking! Answer privately/anonymized per request but publicly, since I saw some other people bring it up in the notes on the poll as well, so it seemed worth posting—both re: Babel specifically and my overall approach to Things In Grey Areas
I haven’t personally read Babel, but from the impression I got from reviews, yours is not an uncommon feeling or reaction!
When I’m vetting submissions, I check for “is it [genre parameters in some way]” and “is it [queer in some way]” and sometimes it’s very easy to say “oh nope, this is a YA book in the Adult SFF” or “whoops, that’s nonfiction” etc (though even things like genre can sometimes get slippery)
And sometimes people have WILDLY different takes on the content of the book or its representation. For Babel specifically, looking through various reviews and reactions, I absolutely saw people saying things like “this was pitched to me with queer representation and I was massively let down” and I also saw people going “this is a queer book and I’m dying on this hill” (though I didn’t know the added context here of author criticism re: lack of gender/sexuality diversity in other books)
In those situations, where there’s ambiguity or varying Opinions, I tend to err on the side of including. My feeling is: if people think it belongs, they can vote for it; if they think it doesn’t belong, they can vote against it. That way, it doesn’t come down to My Personal Opinion Only, especially when I may not always be an expert on the thing in question
I also think it’s worth pointing out when things are subtexty/grey area-y, because it helps manage people’s expectations and make decisions about what they might like (or not like) to read—so I appreciate you doing so!
and When the Angels Left the Old Country also wound up making it nice and simple by pulling ahead in the last few hours!
#babel is super queer#its a good story people should read it#i thought the queerness was pretty obvious in the reading but your mileage may vary#if you want queer readings of not queer books you can listen to our show

WE ARE LIVE! My dear fellow humans, augmented humans, and alien remnants, pack your bags because we are heading to SPACE! It is currently unbearably hot in our part of the world but starting our Murderbot season is very cool, and you can be cool too by listening now wherever you get your podcasts! Our first *two* episodes, an introduction and our first novella discussion, are available *right now*, and we will be following our standard release schedule of every other Tuesday as we cover the rest of Martha Wells' Murderbot Diaries.

Hello! Ryn coming to you from my trip to the mountains with a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!!
Our previous episode, "Interlude- I Sit Beside My Computer And Think...", will be our LAST LORD OF THE RINGS-focused episode for a while!
"But Ryn, what does that mean for the podcast?" It means, dear listener, that we will be starting reading through THE MURDERBOT DIARIES by MARTHA WELLS starting with All Systems Red! If you haven't read the series, they're super short and fun and we highly recommend reading along with the podcast! We'll be covering one novella per episode for the first 5 episodes, and then we will break up the 2 novels slightly. It'll be a short season, but I promise you it'll be a good time. We're already having a blast recording the episodes, and we hope that you'll enjoy listening to them just as much.
We will have an introductory episode releasing on Tuesday alongside our first Murderbot episode, so now is a great time to get a new friend into the pod- the episode will introduce Murderbot, sci-fi, and reintroduce us the hosts!
Thanks so much for listening to our journey through Lord of the Rings- we had an incredible time, and we won't leave Tolkien and his tales behind forever, but for now, strap yourselves in and get ready to head to the Corporation Rim!

something absolutely lovely about especially the first half of fellowship is that the hobbits keep meeting random kind helpful strangers - the elves, bombadil, butterbur, aragorn (also farmer maggot and his wife, though they're not strangers) - until the book solidifies in you the feeling that these are not really instances of random luck, but rather the inherent nature of the world. kind people are everywhere, and no matter where you are, there is surely someone closer than you think that would offer help if you needed it. it's such a beautiful theme across all of LOTR, and it's very sweet to me that it starts from the very beginning of the journey, on such a 'small' (comparatively), everyday scale
