i think my favorite aspect of theon and jon snow as foils is the contrast of their luck wrt father figures. yes, all jon's would-be dads keep dying or going mia on him, he and theon have that much in common, but jon has an endless supply of them. and the kicker is jonny didn't even want all these extra doomed dads! when jeor gave him longclaw he insisted internally that his father was still ned, that ned's ice was the only vs blade he really wanted. the old bear, the halfhand, mance, tormund, stannis, all these guys just glom onto jon against their own best interests with little to no encouragement from his side. it's a mother jon wants, that's what was always missing while he felt satisfied with almost 15 years of responsible, caring fathering by ned, but in the almost exclusively male environment at the wall fate just keeps flinging more male mentor figures wishing to adopt him whether he wants them to or not.

meanwhile, theon, motherless and fatherless at wf, had the opposite problem with ned, his measly one surrogate father figure.
