Fandom In Color: Nile Freeman

For Fandom In Color we're spotlighting Nile Freeman.

Nile is a newly created immortal, who is our POV character for the secret mercenary group known as The Old Guard. Played by KiKi Layne in the film adaptations, she is a well liked character in the fandom, with many fans exploring her struggles around becoming an immortal, and having to leave her family behind, in fanworks. However, there has also been some discourse around treating Nile as an adult instead of a "baby" in the group of immortals.

Since the release of the second film her Fanlore page could use some updating. Can you help us with that?

Featured Article: Victorian AU

For this week’s Featured Article, we’re highlighting Victorian AU, short for Victorian alternative universe. This term describes fanworks that take characters from a modern or future-set fandom and relocate them to a stereotypical Victorian romanticism era setting. It is a form of historical AU.

Unlike canonical Victorians, historical accuracy is not a necessity. Some fans will put in the research to make their fanworks as accurate as possible, while others will use the setting as merely a backdrop or aesthetic for their fanworks. Generally, fanworks focused on romance are very popular. These works can involve overt gestures like socializing (balls, parties, etc), courting, and flower symbolism, or they can be more illicit, involving secret relationships.

Fandom In Color: Bill Potts

For Fandom In Color, we're highlighting Bill Potts!

Bill was a companion to the Twelfth Doctor. She was the first companion that was openly lesbian. Bill was well-liked in the Doctor Who fandom, with many fans expressing that they wished we had gotten more of her. However, despite her popularity, she doesn't feature in fanworks as much as one would think.

Featured Article: SYOT

This week's Featured Article is SYOT, or Submit Your Own Tribute.

SYOT is a trope in The Hunger Games fandom where readers would submit characters to an author to include in their Hunger Games fic. There was some variation in the process, but readers would usually submit the details of their character, like name, age, district, face claim, among other information, and then the author would incorporate them into their story.

SYOT fics were popular on FanFiction.net because the site allowed for private messaging, something other fanfiction archives lacked. SYOT were a huge undertaking because the author had to write 24 separate POVs and complete one full cycle of the Hunger Games, resulting in fics of prodigious lengths. For many authors the challenge was too great and the fics became notorious for becoming abandoned WIPs.

Fanwork Friday: What Shall We Do With A Drunken Sailor?

Going against the dictates of Lucasfilm, today's Fanwork Friday is What Shall We Do With A Drunken Sailor? by Halrloprillalar & Laura Shapiro.

Since 1980 Lucasfilm had asked fans not to publish "sexually explicit" or "gay" stories. However, with the advent of the world wide web this became much harder to enforce. Enter What Shall We Do With A Drunken Sailor?, in 1997, a Hando (Han Solo/Lando Calrissian) fic, one of the first Star Wars slash fics shared online. It imagined Han and Lando as romantic partners, and is fondly remembered by many Star Wars fans.

Featured Article: Diana Bennett

This week's Featured Article is Diana Bennett.

Diana is a controversial character from Beauty and the Beast TV series fandom. She was introduced in the third season of the show, after the death of beloved fan favorite character Catherine, as a potential new love interest for Vincent. This caused quite a stir in the fandom at the time. In response, some fans rejected the third season outright. There were some fans that liked Diana, but just didn't like her in a romantic relationship with Vincent. To avoid the issue they would include Diana in their fanworks, but they would label them "Diana Appears as a Friend".

Fanlore is celebrating Fandom in Color!

This month is Fanlore’s fifth annual celebration of Fandom in Color! Throughout the month of July, we’ll be spotlighting the contributions of fans of color to fandom, celebrating favorite characters of color, and highlighting pairings, events, discussions, and more.

Both characters and fans of color are often overlooked in fandom spaces, and we’re trying to expand their presence on Fanlore. We work on this year-round, but in July we ask specifically for your help by sharing and editing the pages we highlight this month and adding new ones that are not yet documented on Fanlore.

Fanlore should be inclusive of all aspects of fandom and all participants in it. We hope you enjoy what we share this month, and we welcome you to join us in documenting even more.

Fanwork Friday: Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality

This week’s Fanwork Friday is Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality (also known as HPMOR), a well-known but controversial Harry Potter fanfiction written by Eliezer Yudkowsky which reimagines the plot of the first book through the lens of science and rationality. HPMOR was incredibly popular, with parts of the story translated into 15 languages, and even spawning its own recursive fanworks!

The fanfic also prompted a wide variety of fan responses: for example, it was was often referenced by those outside fannish spaces and praised as an example of the way fanfiction could build on the world of a canon. However, other fans looked much more critically at the story, considering it to be exploiting fandom to promote Yudkowsky’s “rationalist” philosophies and professional work.

Featured Article: A Master of Magic

For this week's Featured Article we're reading A Master of Magic by Sadie Shaw.

A Master of Magic is a self-insert Sherlock Holmes story written by 13 year old Sadie in 1903! The story was featured in a supplement to The Minneapolis Journal, called the The Junior Journal, which was for young readers. In the story Sadie travels to London and meets the famed detective Sherlock Holmes. The story found new love in 2024 when it was shared on Tumblr.
