Armando sat up, eyes wide in wonder that he actually managed to avoid the plane crashing into the building after running toward its path. He could’ve run the other way to avoid it but he saw the girl standing there and he knew she wouldn’t have moved as quickly as she did without him there pulling her along. And wasn’t the whole point of today to save her?

Looking to his right he noticed her getting her bearings as well. She was clearly terrified and looking for an exit. He knew letting her find her own way out was a recipe for disaster. She’d be found or end up in the middle of gunfire, neither of which would be a favorable outcome for him.

No innocents.

When Callie realized just who was near her, her eyes widened and she scrambled to get away. He grabbed her before she could get too far, calming her fear with a whispered, “Mike sent me. I need you to trust me.”

It was clearly the right thing to say. She immediately followed his lead, grabbing his hand tight and following without question. He led them out of what was left of the main lobby of the building, aiming for the back exit to take Callie to the main road where he knew Dorn and the van would be. He was almost there when he noticed a man coming at them from the back room area. He was a big guy but nothing Armando couldn’t handle. What he didn't see was the other smaller man hiding in the shadows, knife at the ready.

Two on one, he didn't hate those odds. 

At least he wouldn’t have if he didn’t have to worry about the girl not getting hurt. He had to make sure she stayed out of the way. He flung her behind him, taking a shallow slice to the arm. Nothing excruciating and definitely not the worst thing he’d ever endured. After knocking into the man's head, stunning him momentarily, he turned to the first guy who had made his way to them. He was also holding a knife, but Armando managed to punch him hard enough that he swayed backwards but before Armando could even register it, the other guy had gotten back up and sliced his face with another shallow cut.

Now he was just pissed.

He turned and kicked the guy with all his might, not watching him fall. He turned back to the bigger man quickly, not making the same mistake twice. He immediately dodged a punch and held his hands up to block the knife.

Knowing he had a small window of opportunity while this one was occupied and the other one was down, he yelled at Callie. ”Run! Run!"

Her being alone wasn’t ideal, but if she stayed she would eventually get caught and it would defeat the whole purpose of the fight. She hesitated-because of course she did, all these ‘good guys’ did it for some reason- and it got her caught. The smaller man had managed to get back up, grabbing her as she ran by.

Finally having the space to maneuver now that the girl had left, he gained the upper hand against big guy and managed to knock him out. As he ran to Callie he saw her bite the guy's arm hard enough that he let her go, but she still wasn't quite fast enough. The man had gotten visibly angry now and pulled his arm back with the intent to stab her. Armando quickly grabbed her, spinning her out of harm’s way and awaited the incoming pain.

Only it never came.

He chanced a glance behind him and saw her. She was as beautiful as ever, gun attached to her hip, knife gripped tightly in her hand as she pulled it from where she had stabbed the man in the neck, pulling him away from Armando. Her form fitting outfit showed off the curves he knew like the back of his hand. Her jet black hair was pulled back neatly, not a hair out of place to be used against her. It left the tan skin of her face completely open for him to see the determination there. Her brown eyes were focused, shining brighter when the sun hit them.

She looked beautiful.

She looked tired.

There were dark circles under her eyes that spoke of far more than just a long day. She carried her body differently than he remembered, still agile but taut with a tension he’d never known her to possess. Her face spoke of grief that had decided to live with her instead of moving on. He still had a job to do, so rather than saying the thousands of things he needed to, he threw back a “I had that.”

“Sure you did,” she sniped.

Armando smiled and got up from his crouch, fighting back the last man standing in their way by using his own weapon against him. Callie had frozen in fear, so Armando grabbed her hand and pulled her out of the building.

“West side of the building is clear. She'll have a straight shot to the main road.”

Armando nodded at the information before turning to Callie. “Watch your step on your way back, don’t look at the wreckage too much and only stop when you get to the team or the van."

“Wait you’re not coming with me?” For some reason she looked alarmed by this realization, maybe not wanting to be alone when there were still people fighting and shooting.

Armando shook his head, “no, but you’ll be fine. Go straight to the van, you'll be safe there, okay?” After a pause he added, “And tell Mike I’m sorry.”

She nodded and turned to find her way to the team. Armando turned and looked at the woman with him. “Ximena,” he breathed.

“I’ve got us a boat a little ways from here but we need to hike through these woods. And we should hurry, I hear choppers in the distance.” She dismissed him and walked right past him, knowing he would follow.

When they arrived at the boat, there were a couple duffle bags, a first aid kit and some food. He started the boat while she prepped what he would need to clean his wounds, the two of them working quietly, words that needed to be said being held back either out of fear or the need to wait until they were safer. He laid down so as not to be seen and let her steer the boat, all weapons hidden for now to escape easier. As he cleaned his wounds he couldn't help but think. 

It had been four years since he last saw his wife, last saw his children. What had he missed?

A few hours later they were at an island, a clearly populated island. The two of them landed in a secluded area but he had expected more covert operations for their escape.

“What’s the plan exactly?” He probed.

Ximena threw one of the bags at him. It felt a bit like a passive aggressive action if he was honest. “Get dressed,” she clipped. Definitely pissed then.

Armando sighed and looked inside the bag he held at his chest to find a Hawaiian shirt and khaki shorts. There were a few other essential items but the outfit itself confused him. He raised his eyebrow at her in question. “Not exactly my style.”

She rolled her eyes. “That’s why its perfect. There’s a cruise ship about an hour from here. A crew member…owes me a favor,” she simplified with a shrug. “While everybody else is exploring the island, he'll be sneaking us on. We’ll get off in the DR. Hop a flight to Mexico. Go home. Now get changed.”

He nodded at the plan and quickly changed his clothes. At the bottom of the bag he spotted an envelope. Curious, he opened it, pulling out a wallet with a fake ID. The name read Javier Martinez. She had to have done that on purpose. She had to know how much it would hurt to have to pretend to be Javier when that was their son’s name. He had known she would be upset with him but this was just hurtful. Angrily, he spit out, “Javier, huh?"

She flinched when he said the name.

“Not here. We need to get to the ship.”

That was fine. Armando knew how to be patient.

They made it to the ship with no problems at all and Ximena’s inside guy, though squirrelly, managed to get them onboard and in their room efficiently. Armando’s eyes darted from one section of the room to the next, cataloguing every detail. Through the crack of the bathroom door, he could see toiletries, brands that they had always used. There was a set of his and hers luggage that he distinctly remembers them buying as a joke the year they got married. The room held a small desk, a queen sized bed and had doors that led to a small balcony.

He turned to Ximena who had been watching him while he took in the room. Seeing that he was done with his perusal she approached him and removed his sunglasses. Ever so carefully, she touched the wound on his cheek. Her eyes hardened and her jaw tensed.

“Prison made you sloppy,” she bit out.

“Ximena.” She turned away from him, going to the luggage.

“I packed a few thing from home. I wasn’t sure if they would still fit but it looks like you at least kept up with working out so they should.”

“Ximena.”

“It should only be a couple days anyway and we’ll be able to buy you knew things.”

 “Ximena!” She finally turned to look at him, tears pooling in her eyes but she refused to let them fall. “I’m sorry.”

“For what exactly?!” She burst. “Getting caught? Going to prison for four years? Almost dying? What are you sorry for Armando?”

He walked up to her, grabbing her hands in his. “For not being there when I promised I would.”

“Javi tiene nueve años ahora,” she whispered.

“I know,” he replied heavily.

“No you don’t,” she shook her head, pulling away from him. “You have no idea what it has been like the past four years. Yeah you were alone, taken from us and not knowing if you’d ever get back but we were the ones left behind waiting. I had to be mama and papa. I had to figure out an answer for every ‘when is he coming home’ question. I had to reassure our kids that you didn’t just abandon them because you stopped loving them. I had to hide away my own grief over losing my husband my partner so that our kids wouldn't be affected by mama losing it every damn day. So no you don't know.”

He pulled her back in his arms, lifting her face to meet his eyes once more. "Lo siento, Ximena."

Trembling she breathed out, “Por que?"

“What?”

“Why? Why would you let yourself be caught? Hmm? Cause there's no way they caught you on their own, I know how good you are. The only reason you went to prison is because you let yourself be caught. So why? Help me understand because I don’t, Armando” she begged desperately.

“Es mi papa.”

Confusion colored her face. As far as she knew his father had been dead since before he was even born.

“Mi mamá,” his voice cracked. “Mi mamá me mintió. Mi papá no era Benito Aretas. Se llama Detective Mike Lowrey y no está muerto. Ella quería que lo matara porque estaba enojada con él.”

The hurt was obvious to Ximena, who understood at last. He was a father who left to avenge his father, only to find out his whole pursuit was based on a lie. He almost killed his own father, almost lost the chance to know him. It was complicated for sure, and Ximena wasn’t sure where to begin with the confession. It didn’t absolve him of the hurt he inflicted on their family, but she understood why he had to do it.

For now that was enough. 

Ximena hugged him close, knowing they still needed to work through things but also knowing they had the time to do so now. Not everything had to be solved right this moment. And Armando, knowing no words would ever be enough to make up for his absence, simply held her.
