Pitch for wind chime sculpture - Sign of the Chimes
What is the first thing you think of when picturing the Northshore location? Couldn’t think of anything? That’s because Northshore is missing a key landmark. The Chimes is the solution to this problem - a permanent sculpture located at the top of the lawn hill, designed to be an enchanting sensory experience that educates users on the effects of climate change in their local community. The sculpture consists of a large pergola-like structure made of re-worked dock timber and thousands of dangling steel wind chime ‘flutes’ arranged at varying heights overhead. Additionally, this installation will harness the power the harsh natural elements of the Northshore location as its presence will only become more know as weather conditions intensify.

Feasibility, Sustainability & Enduring Significance
Does my concept fall within the client’s budget and timeframe?
Yes, this projects fits well within the clients budget. Specific numbers are challenging to source for such custom pieces but it can be estimated that the project will fall around $25000.
Is my project a one-off, or can it be refreshed, adapted, delivered in stages, or on multiple occasions?
The project would be a permanent installation
Is it sustainable (environmentally and economically) and withstand the test of time?
Yes, it is intended that the majority of the sculpture will be made of re-worked dock timber and recycled steel and if the sculpture ever had to be disassembled all of the materials could be recycled further.
Does it need regular upkeep or maintenance?
No, the sculpture will be very sturdy and should not need regular maintenance, however, after a few years the timber may need to be replaced as it can weather.

Audience Engagement, Ethics and Diversity
Who is my target audience?
5-25 - anyone, of any age can enjoy the project
How can my project inspire and ethically engage and sustain this target audience?
It is intended that the project will become not only an attraction for the Northshore but a must-do attraction for Brisbane as a whole. The Sign of the Chimes sculpture will be a place that will visit, revisit, and share with friends and family.
How can I grow this audience?
The sculpture could have instagram and TikTok pages where daily content is shared from the site, inviting users to share their own experience. Additionally, these specific platforms are targeted towards the desired audience demographic.
What is the demographic at Northshore and who are its key stakeholders?
Nearby residents, business owners, and event goers

Originality
Does my concept reflect and enhance Northshore’s features (geographic, historical, physical, cultural etc.)?
Yes, the use of industrial materials makes a clear reference to the Northshore’s roots post colonisation and the sculptures purpose to gather people in community with sound is inspired by the indigenous use of the land. Additionally, the project’s ability to take advantage of the Northshore’s harsh weather conditions is at the forefront of the design.
What is my creative contribution (if it is a space/venue/event, what is its content/ program)?
I am the designer of the sculpture, however, its production would be outsourced.

Response to the Site & Client Brief
Does it fill a need/gap at Northshore + key challenge response
Yes, I believe that this project does fill a gap at Northshore. Other than Eat Street, which only operates on weekends, the Northshore does not have a key feature that can attract people everyday and this would address one of the clients key challenges - drawing visitors in week round. The beautiful Sign of the Chimes sculpture would be a bucket list experience that would be added to ‘things to do in Brisbane’ lists etc.

Wind chime sculpture location
sculpture should be visible from almost the whole site as it is intended to be a landmark feature
i want it to be on grass as this invites people to sit under it
Selected location, top of the lawn hill, has been circled in red below

Project Idea no.2 - community garden
This project would involve building multiple irrigated raised garden beds using the recycled dock timber, as well as a re-worked shipping container greenhouse. Organisers would invite local schools to participate in weekly interactive gardening lessons that would educate primary school aged students on sustainable horticulture production and consumption.

Project idea no.1 - wind chimes (chosen idea)
This permanent installation will consist of a large pergola-like structure, made of re-worked dock timber. Attached to this frame will be hundreds of dangling steel wind chime ‘flutes’ arranged in varying heights to create visual interest. Additionally, this installation will take advantage of the often harsh natural elements of the Northshore location as it will only become more beautiful with the dramatic weather. This installation will sound enchanting in windy conditions, shimmer and glisten in sunny conditions, and create a unique water fountain in rainy conditions.

Project Idea no.3 - cafe pop-ups
One of the gaps i found in the Northshore site was that other than Eat Street on weekend evenings, there was nowhere to eat. Food is one of the best ways to gather people so with a rotation on pop-up cafes the site could attract many more people on weekdays. The design would include a re-worked shipping container fitted out with basic cafe supplies and partnerships with Brisbane cafes to use the space for two weeks at a time. This project would be located on the wharf.

Notes from client brief and site visit
Available materials (consider associated cost):
Shipping containers
old dock timber
Target audience:
5 - 25 but this should be narrowed down
ask yourself what you’d want to see in Brisbane?
Accessibility:
Wheelchair access is mandatory
must consider the experience of someone who is hearing or sight impaired
Other:
Think about labor and creative costs
design should be long term
lots of freedom with site use
think about weather - usually very windy and hot as the area was cleared
