the summary
if 'most likely to run off to new york with the love of their life' was a superlative, no one would have voted for fiona, but, as luck would have it, that's exactly what she did. part of it came from having wonderful, loving parents who (much to their chagrin once it came time for their eldest child to leave flee the nest) had instilled in all three of their children the confidence that they could do absolutely anything. that combined with the hubris of youth had fiona confident, not even considering just how hard it was to make it in the big apple. well, all of that and just the fact she would have followed her partner anywhere.
what had first come up in the form of midnight what-ifs, barely pondered in-between giggles and smooches led to the two of them fleeing town with... well, not much. fiona was nineteen, soon to be twenty, and had very little. her entire life fit into two bags and one cracked leather bass case. no way she could leave her prized possession behind. the instrument gifted to her on her thirteenth birthday by the man who gave her her love for musicβher father. accountant by day, he played bass in a grateful dead cover band at night. while she was more interested in cherry garcia than jerry, she thought it was the coolest thing and begged him to teach her to play. all in all, she has him to thank for all thisβif long live ever wins a grammy, she's including that in her thank you speech.
they'd barely settled into new york life when she responded to a flyer advertising an open spot in a band. they needed a bassist, she was happy to oblige. granted, she never, ever expected things to turn out the way they did. she figured it'd give her the chance to jam and maybe make some friends. but all it took was a few practices and she was as invested as the founding members. it took a lot of hard work, shitty apartments (fiona and her partner moved several times before settling in cornelia street, seeking cheaper rent) and even shittier jobs but it's worth it. fiona will never forget the day they found out they were going on tour. heartbreaking in hindsight, but still easily one of the best days of her life.
when she returned home, armed with new stories, presents, and a collection of polaroid's to show off, she had been excited, looking forward to reuniting with her partner, but also nervous. she had bad news to break: she was leaving again. she wouldn't be as far away and it would, hopefully anyway, not last at long. but, while on the road, long live's manager had rented them a house. if anyone asks, it's a creative oasis, a necessary quarantine to get their next album. but, really, it was to, yeah, get the album out but also to keep everyone in line and under supervision. things had gotten tough on the road and while fiona was used to playing peacemaker, even she had struggled to put out some of those fires.
she wasn't sure how her partner would react and never really got the chance to tell them. she knew right away something was wrong, before they had even spoken. the body language had given them away. but, even then, she had not expected to hear they had cheated on her. she was devastated. just like that, her whole world was shattered. this was the person she was closest to, the one she loved so much, and all it took was her to be gone for a few months for them to seek out another person. that kind of betrayal hit hard and deep. in a daze, she grabbed her bags and turned right around, heading to the long live house.
now she's dodging texts and ignoring calls while trying to babysit fully grown adults and figure out her relationship status. she thinks, at least part of her does anyway, that she wants to move past this but she doesn't know how that's even possible. she's just too angry and hurt to think about it logically, instead she'd rather just throw herself into the new album and music.
