One time, a really good friend of mine, in response to finding out I prefer cats over dog, said
“You know if you die, they’ll eat your face, right?”
To which I responded
“Ok, and? If I can’t feed them because I’m dead I don’t want them to starve? I love them, and it’s not like I’m using my face anymore.”
He didn’t have a response to that 😂
But I think about that interaction a lot because it seems like this is a conversation most cat people have at least once, and it cracks me up that that’s somehow the major difference between cat people and dog people

Ehhh the definition of fanfiction is broad, but generally it’s using the existing setting / world / characters / etc of something published
Paradise Lost is a fanfic of the Bible by definition, feel free to show up with a tire iron
But I think you’re putting too much emphasis on “derivative” versus “original” since most of the classics listed above are in fact derivative at least from existing legend if not other forms of storytelling
So what’s the line here? Is it traditional publishing? I’ve read indie books that knocked my socks off. Is it the novel format? Is it beta reading / peer review?
I write both, so I’m biased, and I will confidently say there is a difference between them, but one inherently being better than the other because… reasons, isn’t very compelling to me
so there's nothing wrong with fanfiction or reading it or what have you, but especially for writers you should be aware of something. Literature is food for your brain, it fuels your creativity. What you read and consume has a direct effect on your writing.
Fanfiction is junk food, it can taste good, but it isn't good for you. And if you majority read fan fiction you're gunna see some side effects.
I firmly believe this is why booktok is Like That

Books on Libby have started disappearing.
My friend pointed it out first, and then I started noticing too. Why would books that multiple libraries definitely, 100% had digital access to a couple of months/weeks/days ago disappear?
Amazon is invoking exclusive rights to them.*
Ebooks that the public library once had digital copies of are now only available through Amazon. Audible boasts on their covers about Audible-exclusive audiobooks that did not used to be Audible-exclusive. Entire series and collections are disappearing overnight.
Keep your eyes on the privatization of media and your libraries.
*earlier versions said "getting"; Amazon has likely always had these rights, but in the face of boycotts they're tightening the leash, so to say
**librarians in the notes have also noted that, in addition to Amazon often refusing to sell to libraries/increasing their number of exclusive/privatized titles, libraries have to repurchase eBooks/audiobooks every eight uses, so cuts to library funding have reduced their access to media as well

(okay no, but put in the tags something youre the unofficial influencer of. Like something youve purchased enough, used enough, bragged about and endorsed enough to others that you should be an influencer for)

Please forgive me for ranting, but...I am so tired of AI. Just so tired. I don't want Microsoft Copilot, or Google Gemini, or Meta AI, or whatever other energy-sucking, water-wasting, mediocrity-spewing LLM is currently being thrust upon me. I just want to be left alone to create in peace.

Corporate goon you graduated with on the worst social media site in history (LinkedIn): Discipline! The grind! Concrete cubicles! You haven’t climbed the corporate ladder because you’ve bought into the work life balance conspiracy, and you don’t have discipline like I DO *vibrates from caffeine addiction*

OP explained so clearly and people are still willfully misunderstanding the point 🙄
I get it if YOU would pick the man, babe, I would not
(disclaimer in case this breaks containment: I am not a feminist. I hate feminism. Every day I fight the feminists.)
I need both men and women to understand that the "Man vs. Bear" meme was not an indictment of men against bears, it was an indictment of humans against beasts.
the question for women was not "which is more likely to harm me?" the question was "of the harm I could suffer from either (knowing I cannot overpower either**), which is preferable?"
humans are capable of evil intent and sexual sadism. bears act only on instinct. whether a man's attack is logistically less violent or painful is irrelevant; it is far more frightening to fall into the hands of an evil person than to be at the mercy of a dumb animal.
**This is key. A man will never answer that he would prefer the bear because a man can overpower another man. That a woman can ever overpower a man is so rare as to be immaterial.

I am spoiling the live action Lilo & Stitch. And I am doing it up front and plainly.
Do not fucking see this movie. Do not waste your money on this. Period.
They made Nani give Lilo up to the American government. They made Nani LEAVE Hawaii and pursue being a marine biologist. They made a native Hawaiian character give up her sibling to pursue a dream that she originally did not have. This is imperialist propaganda at its FINEST.
The original fucking movie is about family staying together. It's about indigenous people being able to stay with each other and stay in their home and be together! That's the whole fucking point! Nani is Lilo's last living relative on her homeland—it is jarring, it is disgusting and disturbing that Nani would not only leave her last blood relative alone, give her up to the very government that is harming native Hawaiians TODAY, but also travel to the "mainland" for her dream!
Not to mention, Nani's actress isn't fucking Hawaiian. She's much paler in photos and real life. They fucking darkened her for this movie.
Don't even get me started on the transgender subtext of Pleakley's "human" disguise from the original movie being completely erased in favor of him being played by a regular ass white man. Jumba doesn't have his accent, they made him more villainous, and his "human" disguise is a non-fat white man—which part of his original joke, I know, is that he was bigger and was more clumsy in the movie because of his size, but to have the main shape of his character completely removed is also fucking weird.
This live action movie is a desecration to the original. I encourage you to not see it, please. Don't give Disney any of your money on this one. Just watch the original. Please just watch the original.
The new message in the live action movie is disturbing and gross.
This is one of the most disrespectful live actions I've seen and heard of. I implore you to not watch it.

Hot take Thursday part 2
- I think the surprise pregnancy trope can be done well, it just usually isn’t and that’s why it gets so much hate
- I (a Christian) have been whatever the atheist version of Bible thumped a lot, Karen’s know no religion/understanding of the universe
- George RR Martin was never the new Tolkien
- there doesn’t need to be a new Tolkien, the old one is still relevant
- every time I see someone turn without using their turn signal I feel a rage so primal I have to pray a little and ask God to forgive me (not really I hot take I just think it’s funny)
- honeydew and cantaloupe are top tier fruits, they’re just never ripe enough when they get cut up into fruit salads at the grocery store. Melons are good
Hot Take Thursday
More men should read spicy romantasy - it’s a fun genre and may actually help them decipher their romantic partner if they’re a woman. Women aren’t a monolith, but the fact that most spicy books of any acclaim are written by them is important to note.
Also, women (and people who read spicy books) should stop calling them porn! It’s not porn, it’s not porn with a plot (which I would call erotica maybe?), the vast majority of it is romance that includes scenes with the most intimate part of romance - sex!
Yellowstone is the vibe GoT wanted to have, I said it and I’m not sorry
Every time someone recommends a book to me by saying that it’s X ultra popular series meets Y ultra popular series I want to read it less
Fourth wing / the empyrian or whatever could’ve been a trilogy as planned EASILY had the author cut out all the filler and contrived way the war college functions (I’m still gonna read onyx storm tho)

Earlier this year, my senior cat had a seizure, and we weren’t sure he was going to recover.
He’s mostly back to normal now, we’ll probably get to be his humans for at least another few years and for that I’m overwhelming grateful.
But it got me thinking about humane euthanasia and what a beautiful thing it can be. If you’re lucky, your pet will live to a ripe old age, and there will come a point where even with meds their quality of life will get too low to justify. Then, you get to pet them, and kiss them, and tell them how much you love them and what a good pet they are, how well they’ve done being your buddy.
And they’ll get to feel safe, and loved, and smothered in attention while they peacefully fall asleep in your presence for good.
I know it’s so, so painful for us, but I think we owe our pets so much.
