You cannot make everyone think and feel as deeply as you do. This is your tragedy … because you understand them, and they do not understand you.

Depression is so difficult to come out of because it leaves you like a skeleton of a person. You sleep and wake up, you can’t consume media and feel passionate about it. You don’t care about things you used to love, you’re just this empty shell of who you used to be and it feels impossible to fill the pieces of yourself back in because all that’s left of you is the depression. That’s how it feels for me at least. And you try to hold on to these friendships and relationships with people you love, but you’re so tired and they need more than you give them. They need the bare minimum. And you need a bottomless pit of emotional assistance. There is no balance. Managing depression feels impossible. But it’s not. I have to tell myself it’s not, because if I let myself believe it’s impossible then I have truly given up.

Forgive me if I forget with the birdsong and the day’s last glow folding into the hands of the trees, forgive me the few syllables of the autumn crickets, the year’s last firefly winking like a penny in the shoulder’s weeds, if I forget the hour, if I forget the day as the evening star pours out its whiskey over the gravel and asphalt I’ve walked for years alone, if I startle when you put your hand in mine, if I wonder how long your light has taken to reach me here.

“You’re not in love with me, not really, you just love the way I always made you feel. Like you were the centre of my world. Because you were. I would have done anything for you.”
