Living in Florence South Carolina
Florence, SC is a pleasant small city which forms the core of the Pee Dee section of South Carolina lying between the mountains on one side and the coast on the other. It experiences pleasant to mild cooler months, the warm months can often make one forget the cooler. There are basically only two seasons, summer season extending from May to October and winter season from November to March divided by brief spring and autumn seasons. You might want to spend the summers in the pool or indoors, while the moderate cooler months have plenty of opportunities for outdoors enjoyment like fishing or canoeing on the nearby Pee Dee River to hiking, golf and a variety of other pursuits. If you can sustain the muggy heat, living in Florence South Carolina can be quite pleasant actually.
Florence is a great place if you are moving to SC. Florence SC has successfully moved from agriculture and freight transport and is now involved in a plethora of economic activities ranging from pharmaceutical and advanced medical equipment manufacturing to heavy construction and finance. Florence offers ample employment opportunities and long-term career growth.
There are excellent healthcare services but limited shopping areas. It has a well developed system of neighborhood parks. The cost of living is fantastic. It has a convention center, The Florence Little Theater, the Performing-Arts-Center, Freedom Florence Baseball complex, fabulous golf courses etc. It is 15 minutes away from Darlington Raceway- home to the Nextel Nascar Mother's day race in May. Florence SC also knows how to celebrate and has a number of annual festivals. The South Carolina Pecan Festival being one of the largest. One of the best things about Florence SC is its location. You feel like you are in the middle of the state and the country. Not too far away from any action. Travelling to anywhere from here is quick and super easy, because it is one of the most accessible cities, connected to I-20 & I-95, Florence Regional Airport, CSX Rail and having close proximity to the Ports of Charleston, SC & Wilmington, NC. It's about 90 minutes away from the beach, two hours to Charlotte, NC. The local real estate market is incredibly affordable when comparing median home value with nearby communities. Although there are enough restaurants for the size of the city, it could use a greater variety. Florence is a great place to go out for BBQ or fried foods but it lacks creative or fine dining options. There are some good ethnic options. Not a good town for foodies.

History of Florence, South Carolina
Florence, South Carolina, is now the primary city in Florence County, with a population of approximately 38 thousand. However, its beginnings are really late compared to other important cities in South Carolina. The city started out as a small railroad hub thanks to its strategic position.
The city began its history in 1853, when the owner of the Wilmington & Manchester railroad line opened a depot here. The location was chosen since it was the intersection of three railroad lines: the Wilmington & Manchester, the Northeastern and the Cheraw & Darlington. In fact, the president of this line, W.W. Harllee, is the one who named the city. He bought a house here and named the place after his daughter, Florence Harllee.
During the Civil War, the city served as an important location for supplies. With the opening of Florence's Wayside Hospital, wounded soldiers of the Confederate would travel here for treatment. Captured Union troops would come to the prison-of-war camp, called the Florence Stockade. A lot of these prisoners died. The cemetery of Florence Stockade is now the city's National Cemetery.
Florence continued growing through its railroad network after the war. The population numbered 700 in 1870, but grew rapidly to 1900 in 1880. This is thanks to the development of the economy and the establishment of the city as an important market point.
The city was first chartered in 1871. In 1888, the county of Florence was created and finally two years later the city of Florence was officially created.
The railroad transport continued to help the development of the city in the beginning of the 20th century. During this time, Florence became larger. Schools, a library and a museum were built. This gave the city more life and was probably the first step to the development of culture.
In the late 20th century, the role of the railroad lines began to fade. However, the city was by now an important strategic crossroad between two major regions like New York and Miami. This crossroad of the I-95 and I-20 highways kept transportation as a primary economic factor for Florence. With the introduction of an airport, this fact was solidified even more. The city also started to focus in the pharmaceutical industry too. By becoming an important medicinal herb cultivating place, a new hospital was opened.
Florence is now an important city in the region for the textile industry, medicine, transportation, manufacturing and agriculture. Its population continues to grow even with the strong urbanization of the 21st century.
