there's worse people to die with.
when i first read this chapter, i interpreted this look in lauren's eyes as her realizing she's scared to die. despite fighting her hardest, this would be her end and she failed to find the truth once again. kieran, on the other hand, has faced death many times before and i doubt he was scared to go, so instead he comforted her. it's heartwarming but heartbreaking at the same time :( i still interpret this scene in that way but i also love the interpretation that she felt guilty he was stuck there with her, it could even be a combination of the two.

THE lady arthingham
what do we think about lady arthingham? she's an... interesting character to say the least! i've seen ppl come up with theories that she has some kind of insight into lune or is even working for the phantom scythe. me personally, i think her whole deal is a funny little gag. this random weird lady they keep running into (and ofc her handsome butler) who is somehow spot on with her accusations ... i think she was only ever intended to be a running joke, but i'm curious if anybody has some fun theories

i mean wow that is a lot of coincidences

something else i'm curious about!! in ep.154 the leader, apostle IV, and messenger VII are talking about the three "targets" for their plan. i kinda assume the targets they're speaking of are lauren, kym, and will. the leader and apostle IV then talk about this new order for the purple hyacinth and that he will eventually come out of hiding. what could they possibly want from kieran that would call for the kidnapping of THREE of the people they have found he wants to protect? or maybe only lauren is being kidnapped as a way of getting kieran to come out and they have other plans for kym and will... either way, i'm not liking the sound of any of this whatsoever but i'm really curious to hear everyone's theories
this panel especially stuck out to me if the assumption is right that lauren is the third target. it almost sounds... protective? the leader always seems to draw a line when lauren is mentioned

love your analysis so much!! i think what made ep43 such a major turning point for kieran was that his identity for so many years had just been being a tool—a weapon—for the PS. he had been forced to remain unphased in the face of death and no one in the PS even batted an eye when yet another person was killed. it was something that was routine, something that was expected of him; a mission. however, lauren comes along and does NOT look away from the people he has killed. she sees what he has done and calls it out. contrary to the PS, she did not see him as a weapon, but as a human capable of goodness. i think seeing her so distraught over the murders and her even revealing she had not seen him as a monster, he eventually realizes that he can still choose to be more than just a weapon. it’s the first time in forever someone has looked past his cold, assassin exterior and instead looked at him for who he is—not by ignoring his crimes but by confronting them and believing him to be capable of otherwise. i agree with you that he must've known part of her came to cope with her own guilt, and whether or not he was honest in that interaction, i kinda doubt the emotional outcome would've changed too much. there was a mutual understanding that they were both drowning in guilt (i haven't reread the chapter in quite awhile so some of this might be off the mark...)
Lauki through season 1
I've been tossing around episode 43 in my brain pretty much since I first read it, and with how far Kieran and Lauren have come by the season 3 midseason finale-
It's a monumental episode.
Terrifying, heartbreaking, a proper reality check, and monumental.
Once upon a time, it was easier to threaten his partner so he wouldn't get screwed because of her mistakes.
And once she apologized, to then accept that her bravery was the reason worth keeping her around despite them.
Once upon a time, being thanked for saving someone's life instead of being applauded for taking one was a bit surprising. Pleasantly so.
And so it was easier to make a joke, and brush off the what-ifs in the face of what was.
She was alive.
And so was he.
And it made him feel human.
Kieran had been working through the entirety of season 1 to use Lauren as a tool and to continue seeing her as such. But despite himself, despite his efforts to keep separating his personal feelings from their joint professional venture, he slipped up.
Enough of seemingly miniscule moments added onto each other, and the apologies and thanks he didn't even consider could be aimed at him, intricately weaved themselves into his life, with Lauren's voice.
They stopped being surprising to him.
Even as he considered her words, he was perhaps beginning to imagine and indulge in a world where this camaraderie between him and Lauren would stay constant.
And that hope made him feel human too.
A bit out of bounds of a strictly professional partnership, Kieran offered his help, even when he knew it would most likely result in nothing of substance given his suspicions of Harvey's killer.
And all it took was one smile directed at him.
To make him feel human yet again.
(big fan of Kieran realizing he was a goner the moment Lauren first genuinely smiled at him, why, thank you)
It's that need emanating from Kieran's subconscious that urges him to keep giving as much as he can to the world around him in hopes that it would settle the weight against all that he has and will be taking (for god knows how long).
And so he helps out and tries his best.
Bringing Lauren home and offering her space as if she was a friend and it was a completely normal thing for him.
Which it wasn't at all, but he did it anyway.
Because with genuine appreciation directed at him, it got a little easier to breathe, it got a bit easier to be more honest, and it surely got much easier to break into a truly genuine smile.
It was easier to feel like a person, like a human being, and not a blade.
Even when his own actions confused him terribly.
Arguably in 43, Kieran turned the most human he had ever been the entire season and sadly, that just didn't coincide with the best version of him as a person. No matter how you break a coin, it'll always have two sides. We only got to see the lighter side of Kieran White more detailed in season 2 and 3.
(Reminds me of that 'I would never do-' 'Oh but you would. If you were scared enough, hungry enough, tired enough, lost enough...' post)
Kieran, at first, made light of his last mission just as he would in front of any of his colleagues. He made unserious comments over his grim actions, trying to wave off the gravity from their consequences, as was expected from him in the wake of the destruction he was ordered to have wrought.
Except that it wasn't Bella or another member of the Scythe before him, but Lauren.
Blind yet righteous, morally stark Lauren.
(I want to write unripe instead of stark but I know that's not the right word for it. When I say morally stark, I mean Lauren's own moral compass isn't quite apparent to her through season 1. Her actions are often contradictory and shrouded in moral greyness but because she's the police counterpart in their partnership, I feel like it's easier for her to justify her actions as Lune-or otherwise-because her reasons must be different and more selfless than an assassin's, and therefore much more purer than the revenge quest he had going on. This is sarcasm btw. Even if she doesn't outright claim it, her actions spell it out all the same idk)
So, instead of joining in on the little joke (which Kieran knew she never would've in the first place), she called him out on the barbaric nature of his inhumane murders.
As if he didn't already know it.
And that's when the mask finally breaks.
Unacceptable rage was still a few panels and words beyond this one but this is where Kieran put down the mask of a so-called arrogantly proud assassin because the only audience to his act in that cave was himself.
And the realization made him feel terribly human.
Lauren didn't rush over to the cave for an insincere performance from Kieran. She was there to vent out her rage and find some justification over his actions, to maybe soothe the guilt over innocent lives lost that had already wound around her heart and was choking her since the morning when she found out the news.
Somewhere, somehow, Kieran had to be aware of it too.
But, oh, how human it is to forget.
And how human it is to err.

anyone else think dakan isn't the PS leader? we know the leader and a few other members somehow escaped from the massacre at the print shop, and in chapter 133 dakan told lauren he didn't find out the royal family ordered it until he got a warning letter from the leader before the ATST. he's probably involved or has some insight into the PS/snap dragon somehow but i doubt he's the leader... if he was the leader i feel like he would've immediately knew it was the royal family that called it based on how hard they were trying to misconstrue the group's intentions and arrest the members. it's plausible i just misinterpreted what was said so if this post makes no sense feel free to execute me
