I get my media recommendations the old fashioned way: by watching someone I follow on here go on an unhinged reblog spree of media related content until I eventually decide to go "alright, what's all this then"

how did you get into touhou/how much of the series have you played ? i haven't played any but ive looked at the wikipedia page for it and know its a Whole Thing; just wondering since you post about it too !
Tumblr media
Oh, there is a bit more history to this one.
Now Touhou I've known since like, 2009 or so and purely through osmosis (and memes, and walfas. I could talk about how walfas broke the Hispanic Youtube community at some point).
I knew people who were into it, and I remember myself attempting to play EoSD/TH6 back then. Although I didn't get very far (if at all, I think the game crashed at some point. Being 8-9 years old and not knowing how to patch the games didn't help either).
I kept hearing about Touhou as the years went by, but it really wasn't until 2022 that I got around actually playing the games.
Can't say I remember exactly why I revisited the series, only that it most likely was somewhere in the lines of "I want to get into Danmaku games/I need something short to pass the time in college/Yuuka".
I did start with the PC-98 games first. And despite their simplicity in both gameplay and story, there's still a lot I like about them. Lotus Land Story/TH4 is currently my favorite, with Subterranean Animism/TH11 following after.
As for how many games I've played, I'd say up until Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom/TH15. This includes most spinoffs up to that point (except Impossible Spell Card/TH14.3 which I haven't beat yet).
Although, for writing reasons I did read the Forbidden Scrollery manga + part of TH18's script.
You could argue Touhou is my "main" community rn. It's what I'm focusing the most at the moment, both drawing and writing-wise. And I think it'll remain like that for a while. This side of the community is pretty nice.

EO "Pitfalls" (the metaphorical ones, at least).
I've been rewatching some of Mekkah's older Pitfall series for Fire Emblem. It was an old set of videos, but they pretty much helped the community change some of its ways regarding how viable certain units or mechanics actually are.
And it made me think: We seriously need something like that but for EO.
"X class is bad", but why? Because others outdamage them? Have you considered what that seemingly bad class can do that the other can't? What equipment they can use that the other can't? What sort of utility they can use that doesn't necessarily revolve around killing enemies?
As for skills, A 500 damage skill might sound inferior compared to a 1000 damage one. But is the 1k damage skill really necessary when most enemies don't even have that much HP to begin with?
And even then, do you deal 1k damage with the skill alone, or does it require a complicated setup that in reality could buff any skill to that level of damage?
That's really the sort of the thing the community needs to ask themselves more. They take a whole lot of things for granted without so much as giving them a second glance.
Just to give an example:
Alchemists in EO1 are very powerful, with their second tier skills (Flame/Freeze/Thunder) dealing thousands of damage per turn without the need for debuffs. That's around the same damage as Caduceus, a skill known for its outrageous numbers.
Except Caduceus only deals Bash damage which not many enemies are weak to. Meanwhile, Alchemist skills have three different elements they can use to exploit weaknesses against most enemies - including bosses which are the main difficulty of EO1.
Against the dragons and even the ultimate boss, an alchemist can deal up to 1.5k damage per turn, for example. And they can do that pretty much every turn, compared to medics who instead have to stop attacking to support/heal, landsknechts and ronin who have to reapply buffs, and survivalists who have to setup Apollon/1st Turn.
And this is all without mentioning how they can easily reach the 127 cap for TEC, further increasing their damage. No need for accessory stacking like other classes - their ultimate equipment is more than enough.
So why do we constantly hear people say Alchemist fall off? Because their Poison and AOE attacks are not as strong. People only see those and immediately ignore the class - despite everything else they can provide. Single target damage, utility skills such as Sight and Warp (both of which are incredibly helpful in the 6th stratum) and also being one out of two classes with Scavenge (helping with the low postgame drop rates).
And since we're talking about AOE, it seems great at first. But if you consider how most encounters in EO1 are weak, is it really necessary, or is it just overkill?
The highest HP a common enemy in EO1 has is 1030. Everything else is barely around 800 and that's during the postgame - when that's usually the damage single target skills (and even normal attacks with the right equipment) will deal in comparison to AOE ones.
When it comes to bosses, the only ones that have more than one enemy are Fenrir and Royalant - two earlygame bosses that can be beaten fast enough that the reinforcements don't actually matter much.
I could go on, but I feel that'd just stretch out this post way more. There are way more cases like this of a class or skill being either overrated or underrated due to people not actually knowing how to use them, or thinking big damage numbers are the most important aspect, even if they're way more than it's actually necessary...

When I made that pitfall post, this sort of comments are exactly why I did so. To have people stop saying "don't do this" or "X is bad" for once.
This isn't FE where limited resources and ranked runs are a thing and thus the topic of "what's better" matters more. Literally anything can work and there's no punishment for taking your time experimenting. That's the entire point of EO - DRPGs as a whole, even.
Why do you think the series lets you create your own characters in the first place.
In every game with subclassing, you can turn any class into a STR/TEC powerhouse thanks to forging, stat boosters and equipment bonuses (especially in EO3 since accessory stacking exists). You can do the same by increasing VIT to turn them into tanks, or ailment items/forging if you want or need those for certain conditionals.
Just because it's not obvious at first doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
Then there's this.
Tumblr media
I don't even like 2u or its dlc either, but are you kidding me.
I can understand Ur-Devil to a point as heavily limiting your options, but that's... kind of the point of that boss - to be utterly unfair even for the story mode party. Plus it's not part of the main game which is flexible enough (thanks to an actually functional grimoire stone system), so...
No.

How did you discover EO ? 👁👁
Tumblr media
It's not much of an interesting story.
Before EO, I already knew of Yuzo Koshiro's works. I was a big fan of the Streets of Rage series. So by proxy I looked up his music a ton.
So sooner or later I found out about EO. It was around 2019 when I looked up other games Koshiro worked on and discovered this series.
The combination of its cutesy artstyle + Dungeon Crawler gameplay + FM Synth soundtrack caught my interest quickly. So, I got EO1 afterwards, saw mediko and the rest is history (lol).
In all seriousness, though, it was the story of EO1 that hooked me in so much. The second half is still shocking even to this day.
Not just the reveal (please play eo1 if you haven't) but everything before and after plays so well on a theme that I haven't really seen explored before in RPGs — that of the consequences of adventuring and how progress and sacrifice often goes hand in hand.
EO1 is a much darker game than it lets on, but that's the reason why I love it so much.
After I 100%'d EO1, I went through the series in order. Though as you probably know by now, I thought less of the series the further I went. Not to mention the community. I don't interact with it anymore.
Regardless, the DS Trilogy still remains very dear to me, just because of how good and influential they were.
EO3 not as much (I find it somewhat overrated but it's still great). But EO1 (and 2) pretty much catapulted everything I do today.
Writing, Drawing, Composing, Programming? All thanks to mediko EO1. It's my favorite game ever for a reason and it will probably remain like that forever.
