Semifinals: Veronica Mars vs The 100

Veronica Mars: As the daughter of well-respected County Sheriff Keith Mars, Veronica's biggest life problem was getting dumped by her boyfriend, Duncan Kane, until the murder of her best friend, Lilly Kane. After Lilly's murder, Veronica's life falls apart. Keith mistakenly accused Lilly's father, popular software billionaire Jake Kane, of involvement. When Mr. Kane is proven to be innocent, he has Keith ousted as sheriff in a recall election, who the corrupt Don Lamb then replaces. Keith opens a private investigation agency, Mars Investigations, where Veronica works part-time. Veronica helps her father solve cases and conducts her investigations on behalf of schoolmates.

The 100: When nuclear Armageddon destroys civilization on Earth, the only survivors are those on the 12 international space stations in orbit at the time. How to spot a (heart wrenching sad cat) Charity Scam

So I've been get a lot of requests for money in my askbox lately, from users I have never seen before! Usually sad cats, sometimes gender affirming medical bills, a queer person being made homeless etc etc... and guess what? None of them are real! It's scammers who have learned how to work tumblr's userbase and prey on our general sense of community and charity.

Here it is, so sad! So tragic! But let's note a few things:

It's generic. They don't know me, I don't know them. it's addressed to 'friend', no use of nicknames or usernames.

Even the cat and the problem are generic 'little kitty' who has 'urgent needs'. This is not how real people talk, this is because this scam is being used over and over with different accounts a different 'cats'.

Praying (uh huh.)

Asking you to reply privately- This is so people don't spot the scam and point it out the mark and because if too many people posted replies to the same message it would beome really obvious that this is a scam. If they're looking for 'boosts' so badly, then why do they need you to reply privately?

Now that I'm suspicious, let's investigate.

Sent me an ask and then followed me! Sounds like they're just hitting up anyone and everyone, but even more likely they have a list they're working from.

(I get so many, I'm probably on a mail-out list a mile long, just being hit up for cash. Likely I fell for one of these once and got my name added to every scam list for miles, but oh well.)

So let's see if they're a bot or a real person!

The blog looks genuine enough, they've got a bio, a fandom etc. And it says they're an artist!

And of course there's that sad cat post, pinned right to the top, so I don't have to look any further through the blog for verification... Looks super legit, pics of the cat, pics of the bill... of course anyone can print out a bill and take a picture of it...

As I do scroll futher, it's full of reblogs making this look like an active user. So how can I tell it's not genuine?

Well, if they're an artist they probably post right? Doodles? Pictures? Let's have a look at their origional posts.

The fastest way to do this is by using an outside tool like Original Post Finder.

just type in the suspicious username and go...

Voila! As suspected, the only post this bot account has ever made is Sad Cat Post.

Confirmed: Scam. Do not give your money to these guys, it looks so real but they're just here to make you feel like a bad person for not handing over everything you can. Charity is wonderful, supporting friends is wonderful, but tbh save it for people you actually know irl/ mutuals you have an actual relationship with. Don't believe any rando who comes knocking!

How Do I Tag?

“How Do I Tag” “I’m Bad At Tagging”

The truth is, there’s no ‘right’ way to tag.  More often than not There’s A Tag For That.  BUT if you’re interested in making it easier for your friendly wranglers and/or for other people to find your work, there are a few steps you can take:

FANDOM

What is meant by “Fandom”? When Ao3 asks for what fandom your work is it means what is your canon source.  If you’re writing a fic about Frozen, then your Fandom is Frozen (2013).  If you’re writing for the Dragon Age world, you should throw Dragon Age somewhere into this section.

I’m not sure what the ‘right’ fandom is? No worries!  That’s part of the Wrangler’s job, is to figure out what you mean.  So if you do a typo, or don’t do it exactly like the drop down box, that’s okay!  We’ll figure it out and smash them together (we call it synning!) so that anyone searching the fandom will find your work too!

But there’s more than one! Cool!  Hit ‘em all, it’s a-okay by us!

I’m writing something all my own, there is no canon! AWESOME!  We have a fandom tag for you too!  Its called ‘Original Work’.  Try to avoid ‘No Fandom’ - people rarely if ever search that for works though.

There IS canon, but apparently no one has ever written it before?! Firsties!  More seriously, you can put anything in there, so just put the name of your canon in and we’ll sort it out!  Try to be as accurate as you can, ie Which ‘Moon’ do you mean?  the 2009 Movie? The Song?  Youtube User?  Help us help you!

RELATIONSHIPS

First and foremost, a point of a lot of confusion: ‘/’ means sexual/romantic relationship while ‘&’ means platonic/friendship.  You have NO IDEA how many tags are out there that are ‘Mother/Son’ when the tagger meant ‘Mother & Son’ (or whatever, I’m just throwing out examples).

Secondly, please please please! don’t mix these together.  I mean, you can.  That’s the beauty of Ao3.  But it will never end up as a common searchable tag (ie: ‘CharA/CharB & CharC’).  So for maximum searchability keep it to one grouping per tag.

SEARCHABILITY!  I WILL TAG ALL THE POSSIBLE COMBINATIONS OF MY PAIRING!! Cool, cool.  But we’re more than likely going to syn them all to the common version of it, so ‘Joe Johnson/Mark Meyers’ ‘Mark Meyers/Joe Johnson’ ‘Mark/Joe’ ‘Joe/Mark’ ‘Johnson/Meyers’ ‘Meyers/Johnson’ ‘Jark’ ‘Meyson’ and ‘OtherShipNamesHere’ are all going to become the same thing, as far as searching goes.  Save yourself some time, and your readers an inch.  Just pick one and go with it ;)

CHARACTERS

Simply put, this is who’s in your fiction.  Some people tag for everyone who makes an appearance, others tag just the major characters - its totally up to you!  But the same rules apply here as did in the relationships!

One Character per tag!  Otherwise how can people search for their fav if you’ve tagged ‘Mark and Joe and Andrea and Thog’?  Much better to tag Mark, Joe, Andrea, Thog seperately!  Wranglers will get them to the right place if your version isn’t quite right.  Likewise, repeating characters with different versions of their names usually won’t end up getting you better search results.

There are always exceptions to these rules (video games are a major one - there is a difference between Female Lavellan and Lavellan), but it’s generally true.

I disagree/don’t like the ‘common’ tag for a character in the drop-down box! No worries :)  Just tag it as you like.  Any and all synning we do will NOT change your tags on your works.  All we do is make it so that everything that’s talking about the same thing is actually talking about the same thing.  Search one and you’ve searched them all.

I want to note that X is just a minor character though! Okay!  If you want to list them as being in your story, they go here.  Any notes about them should go into ‘Additional Tags’ (see below).

ADDITIONAL TAGS

Whee!  Wranglers call these tags ‘freeform’.  Anything else you want to tag should go here.  There are a ton of common usages, but really you can put anything here.  There are rules the Wranglers have for when we mark a freeform tag as ‘common usage’, but it somewhat varies from fandom to fandom, so I won’t elaborate here, but, for instance, if several people make a note that ‘Fenris is the Inquisitor’, ‘Inquisitor Fenris’, and ‘HAHA!  Fenris is INQUISITOR BITCHES!’ then the Wranglers will probably smush these all together under a common theme (Inquisitor Fenris, in this case).

You can tag here however you want.  Want to talk to your readers? sure!  Want to tag tumblr style?  Go for it.  Want to make commentary?  By all means! Wranglers will make your tags go as best they’re able.

Parting Words

Wranglers are human, and that’s a good thing!  It means we can see and combine tag concepts that belong together in a way that a computer can’t.  It also means that we do, on occasion, make mistakes.  If you see something you think is a mistake or have a question about why something is the way it is, feel free to contact support or our twitter.  We’re very friendly!

#TheBestOfThe100: A Celebration Event

September 21st - October 21st

Nearly two year has gone by since The 100′s seventh season aired it’s last episodes. There are many things we as a fandom love about this show, and we should celebrate those things.

This event aims to allow us to remember what we loved about the characters and relationships on the show, and what we loved about the story The 100.

There are a three ways to participate in this event:

Reblog and share others’ creations during the event.

Recommend or Shoutout fics/vids/edits/meta/creators that you love, or works that have stuck with you ( @heartbellamy​‘s[creator shoutout pages]) are an excellent example of this)

Create fanfiction or gifs/edits/meta/vids based on prompts under the cut as well as in their own posts linked here:

You do not have to do all of the prompts and there are no set days to post beyond the 30 day timeframe of the event. You pick what inspires you as it inspires you and if none of the prompts inspire you, pick your own prompts. This is a celebration of The 100, all creations are welcome. (And, if you can’t make it in time, late entries are always welcome, too!)
