This poem will make you understand this unfathomable truth again and again, as if for the very first time. —Emily Wilson, Introduction to The Iliad

“—she twisted her throat around the bizarreness of the new language, and her mind around the concepts, wrestling them as if wrestling an angel—the object being not to win but to lose to the other: to surrender into the alternate mind-set and think in the other language, and for the hundredth time become more than she ever had been before the surrender […] Her enemy was changed too; she looked inside her, and found a lover there instead” (The Wounded Sky, Diane Duane).
What I absolutely adore about this depiction of Uhura is how it removes the act of learning a language as "owning" the language, which is more like an act conquest, and instead asserts that the language and way of thinking assimilates you instead of the other way around and that there is joy in that surrender—there's this almost anticolonial sentiment underneath that sort of philosophy and also fits very neatly into IDIC as a concept. Just. Very cool.

My deepest darkest fantasy is that I collapse on the street and I am rushed to the hospital. They perform a bunch of tests and find out I am severely deficient in some kind of vitamin. Then I start taking the vitamin and I become the happiest cleverest person alive because all my problems were caused by this one deficiency

as an aroace person with limited sexual experience, no interest in watching porn, and poor sex ed as a teen, there IS something simultaneously funny and vaguely tragic about being 28 adult years old and realising how extremely tiny your frame of reference is for genitalia and deciding you should expand this to better understand bodies (yours and others). and then you're just there like "okay so what the fuck do I even google right now, anyway"

God that last scene with Jack Crusher is just insufferable. Sitting in the Captain's chair as a Ensign! Rattling off how he knows 13 languages and knows every criminal in the galaxy and has "scienced" his way out of harrowing situations and then being told he's not comms, but going from criminal willing to sell guns to every warlord on a planet to flagship bridge officer in the space of a year. Then he gets visited by Q and told he's the Picard now. Honestly one of the most embarrassing scenes I've seen in media with actual money behind it. How did this awful Fanfic.net OC make his way into official canon
Jaylah had to go to the Academy normally, and she fixed up a 22nd century starship single-handed with nothing but the music of the Beastie Boys and a box of scraps

think it's a deep consolation to know that spiders dream, that monkeys tease predators, that dolphins have accents, that lions can be scared silly by a lone mongoose, that otters hold hands, and ants bury their dead. that there isn't their life and our life. nor your life and my life. that it's just one teetering and endless thread and all of us, all of us, are entangled w it as deep as entanglement goes. v neat i think.
